Video: New Preview From The Prisoner Starring Jim Caveziel

A nine minute preview of the new series The Prisoner starring Jim Caveziel was shown at Comic-Con and it looks marvelous. The AMC show is a remake of the 60s classic British television show that starred Patrick McGoohan as a British spy who is kidnapped and ends up in "The Village" where he is only referred to as Number 6. This time around the village is in the desert instead of the seaside, but it looks just as intriguing. Ian McKellan is the head of the Village who seems quite intent on making Number 6's life quite intolerable. Take a look:

Next James Bond Film Gets Screenwriters

The next James Bond movie is moving forward. Daniel Craig is on board to reprise his role as 007 and writers Peter Morgan, Neal Purvis (Frost/Nixon) and Robert Wade have been brought on board to pen the screenplay.
Purvis and Wade most recently worked on "Quantum of Solace" and "Casino Royale." Daniel Craig is already set to reprise his role as 007, and Wilson and Broccoli are producing. No start date has yet been set, but sources said EON and MGM are eyeing a 2011 release.

Morgan, who wrote both the play and film "Frost/Nixon" and "The Last King of Scotland" and "The Queen," has most recently been working on "The Special Relationship" for HBO, and "Hereafter" for DreamWorks. He'll begin writing on the Bond film after completing those projects.
Purvis and Wade also wrote The Brazilian Job, the the sequel to The Italian Job. The film is not titled yet.

J.J. Abrams to Produce Diamond Heist Movie

J.J. Abrams' company Bad Robot will produce a diamond heist movie based on a Wired article. Paramount owns the rights to the story.
Dubbed the untold story of the world's biggest diamond heist, article chronicles the crime thought to have been carried out by Leonardo Notarbartolo, who was arrested in February 2003 for heading a ring of Italian thieves. They were accused of breaking into a seemingly impenetrable vault beneath the Antwerp Diamond Center and making off with at least $100 million in loot that's never been found. Based on circumstantial evidence, Notarbartolo was sentenced to 10 years; he was released from a Belgium prison this week.
We do like a great heist movie. This one should be interesting.

You can see the Wired feature here and watch a video about heist here.

Nicolas Cage Gets Medieval

Photo of Nicolas Cage

Nicolas Cage gets medieval in this still from his new film, Season of the Witch. USA Today has the report:
The National Treasure star is in Austria filming the 14th-century supernatural thriller Season of the Witch. He plays a knight charged with exiling a sorceress. "He has come back from the Crusades and has lost his faith in the church and in God," says producer Charles Roven (The Dark Knight).

The witch is played by Claire Foy (British TV's Little Dorrit). Ron Perlman (Hellboy) co-stars. "Wherever the witch has gone, the plague has followed," Roven says. "So they need to transport her to the mountains and perform a ritual that will lift whatever enchantment she has on the land."
The film is directed by Dominic Sena (Gone in 60 Seconds, Swordfish). Nicolas Cage riding a horse? Speaking in medieval English? Now that's something we've got to see. The film is being shot in the Austrian Alps right now and will be released in 2010.

Fox Announces Mid-Season Lineup

Fox has announced its midseason schedule and Joss Whedon fans aren't going to be happy. Dollhouse was supposed to premiere on Mondays with 24. It's been moved to low-ratings Fridays, where it will be paired with Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Friday is not a place you put shows you want to do really well. The premiere date is Friday, February 13, 2009, which is just about as stupid as it gets. The producers noted that was the day that Angel was canceled in 2004.
-- "Idol" will premiere Jan. 13 at 8 p.m. and will include the usual two-hour, two-part rollout. "Idol" and "Fringe" will still partner on Tuesdays as planned.

-- Wednesday was originally going to have "House" leading into the "American Idol" results show. Now "Idol" has been shifted to 8 p.m. and will instead give TV's biggest lead-in to new drama "Lie to Me," which stars Tim Roth as a "human lie detector." Fox is very excited about this show, though it will likely to draw comparisons to CBS' freshman breakout title "The Mentalist."

-- Instead of reality block of "Hell's Kitchen" and "Secret Millionaire" on Thursdays, Fox will partner "Hell's" with a lead-in from "Bones." This is a promotion for the crime drama, which has performed strong this season. Fox had originally intended to shift "Bones" to Fridays in midseason. "Millionaire" will air in December.

-- "Hole in the Wall," despite many assuming the game show was a goner, is returning midseason to help launch Fox's Sunday animated block in the 7 p.m. hour.

Absent from the current schedule: Live-action comedy or new reality shows. No dates yet for Fox's new animated shows such "The Cleveland Show" either.

"Fringe" and "Dollhouse" are part of Fox's Remote-Free TV plan, where advertisers pay a premium to sponsor a show in exchange for Fox running about half as many ads per hour. In the case of "Fringe," the move has been successful, say media buyers who have studied the results. Fox says that even though "Dollhouse" changed time periods to Fridays, it will still be Remote-Free TV.
Well, it's good that there won't be as many commercials during Dollhouse. As for Fringe, the show is totally weird and we quite enjoy it.

Jack Bauer Returns in January

24 fans will finally get to see the long-delayed seventh season of the show in January. On January 11 and January 12 Fox will air the two hour premiere.
Pre-empted last year due to the writer's strike, "24" returns for two hours on both nights before settling into its regular time period on Monday, Jan. 19 at 9 p.m.

*****

Fox hasn't yet officially confirmed whether the Joss Whedon frosh series "Dollhouse" will bow on Jan. 19 at 8 p.m. As originally announced at its May upfront presentation, "Dollhouse" is expected to be paired with "24" on Monday nights starting in January.
Dollhouse, which stars Eliza Dushku, went into production hiatus for a couple of weeks while Joss Whedon re-wrote the pilot and changed the cast lineup a bit. This made Whedon fans very nervous, given Fox's history with Firefly.

Robert Downey, Jr. is Sherlock Holmes

Robert Downey, Jr. is set to play Sherlock Holmes in the upcoming film directed by Madonna's husband, Guy Ritchie. So how did this come about, anyway?
[L]et's connect the dots, shall we? Ritchie has a movie in the can at Warners, Rocknrolla, a gangster thriller due in October that stars 300's Gerard Butler and Jeremy Piven. People I know who've seen it say it's actually pretty good--so perhaps Ritchie has some renewed heat. But one detail seems to have eluded Variety. Guess who produced the new film? Susan Downey, who is Robert Downey Jr.'s wife and--equally important--an exec VP for Joel Silver, Warners' top action producer. And guess who is producing "Sherlock Holmes"? Wow--it's Joel Silver and Susan Downey.

Isn't it amazing how everywhere you turn in Hollywood, there's a funny coincidence staring you right in the face?
This is the action version of Sherlock Holmes. Sacha Baron Cohen and Will Ferrell are making a comic Sherlock Holmes movie, which will come out a bit later. We want to see both films. Robert Downy, Jr. as Sherlock Holmes? We love it.

James McAvoy Got Buffed For Wanted

James McAvoy endured quite a training regimen for his role as a nerd turned assassin in the new film, Wanted.
James McAvoy, the Scottish actor who bulked up to play an assassin in Timur Bekmambetov's SF action movie Wanted, told SCI FI Wire that it took him months to achieve his chiseled body. (Women in a preview screening audibly gasped when McAvoy removes his shirt in one scene.)

"I'm not still like that," McAvoy confessed in a group interview in Beverly Hills, Calif., on June 16. "I've lost a lot of weight, I'm glad to say. It took me a couple of months to get into shape for this film, and it took me, like, a couple of weeks for it to all disappear. I'm not joking, I lost 90 percent of the weight really quickly."

In the movie, based on Mark Millar and J.G. Jones' comic-book series, McAvoy plays Wesley Gibson, a depressed office worker who is recruited by Fox (Angelina Jolie) into a shadowy organization of assassins called the Fraternity, led by Sloan (Morgan Freeman). In the film, Wesley starts out as pasty and anxiety-ridden, but morphs into a killer with superhuman abilities.

"I had to eat like a Trojan to keep the weight on, because you're doing 12-13 hour days, and you're doing a lot of stunts during the day anyway, and you're doing a lot of fighting during the day, so it's like [a] workout," McAvoy said. "And then you've got your workout at night. So I was just eating enough for, like, four people. And then, of course, when I stopped doing all of that, I stopped eating all of that, I stopped going to the gym, it dropped. It just disappeared in weeks. I was so disappointed."
Women gasping when he took his shirt off, eh? No wonder he's unhappy that the new physique disappeared the minute he stopped his herculean training effort.

DVD Pick: No Country For Old Men

Photo of DVD of No Country for Old MenThe Coen Brothers swept the Oscars, winning Best Picture and Best Director for their post-modern noir Western, No Country for Old Men. The Coens also won Best Adapted Screenplay. The Best Supporting Actor trophy for Javier Bardem for his chilling turn as as the sociopathic serial killer Anton Chigurh.

Based on the bestselling novel by Cormac McCarthy, No Country for Old Men shares the nihilistic worldview of many of McCarthy's books. McCarthy's is a bleak landscape, in which subtle truths and shards of hope can sometimes be found. When Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) finds a suitcase containing $2 million dollars at the scene of a failed drug deal that ended in a bloodbath he should have walked away. He doesn't, of course: he takes the money. On his trail is the utterly ruthless and evil killer Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem), who has been hired to get the money back. Chigurh dispatches anyone who gets in his way, leaving a trail of bodies behind him. Small-town sheriff Ed Tom Bell (Tommy Lee Jones) is determined to stop Chigurh's reign of terror and sets off in pursuit.

It is a violent and yet somehow thoughtful film, which is essentially a character study of the three men. Tommy Lee Jones is brilliant as Sheriff Bell who, although he has seen it all in his career, cannot quite fathom the pure evil that is Chigurh. Javier Bardem is effectively terrifying as the psychopathic Chigurh, and Josh Brolin turns in a surprisingly shaded performance as Moss. The cinematography is stunning, providing the perfect backdrop for a story that is so raw, so tightly-paced that you really can't stop watching -- even though you may want to during some of the intensely violent scenes. Rated R for graphic violence and harsh language, the film is definitely for adults only.

The DVD also includes some great extras, including reflections of the cast and crew, a "making of" feature and "Diary of a Country Sheriff", which explores the relationship between the compassion of Sheriff Bell and the brutality of Anton Chigurh. The DVD is available now wherever DVDs are sold, and at a nice discount at Amazon.com.

Semi-Pro Tops the Box Office

Screen shot from Semi ProIn a very slow box office weekend, Will Ferrell's Semi-Pro barely took the top spot, making $15,200,000. In third place was Paramount's The Spiderwick Chronicles which made $8,752,000 in its third week of release, for a cumulative take of over $55 million.

The film took in a disappointing $8,752,000 in its opening weekend. In fifth place was Jumper, which took in another $7.6 million for a cumulative take of $66,823,000.

Shia LaBeouf Announces Name for New Indiana Jones Film

We're still in the recovery phase of watching the shock and awe that was Britney Spears' now infamous VMA performance. And now that that memory is blessedly fading from our memories, we seem to recall that Shia LaBeouf announced the name of the new Indiana Jones movie at the same awards show. The new title is Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
Shia LaBeouf, one of the franchise's new castmembers, announced the title of the much-hyped, long-awaited flick in dramatic fashion at MTV's Video Music Awards. For months, if not years, the name of this latest Indy adventure has been debated. Last month, it seemed that the field of contenders had been narrowed when it was discovered that Lucasfilm had registered six names with the Motion Picture Association of America. In addition to the winning name, there was "Indiana Jones and the City of Gods," "Indiana Jones and the Destroyer of Worlds," "Indiana Jones and the Fourth Corner of the Earth," "Indiana Jones and the Lost City of Gold," and "Indiana Jones and the Quest for the Covenant."

Ever since the last Indiana Jones adventure, "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade," was released in 1989, rumors of a fourth film have run wild. Several high-profile Hollywood writers, including Frank Darabont ("The Shawshank Redemption") (see "After 'Waste Of A Year' On 'Indy 4,' Director Rebounds With Stephen King's 'Mist' ") and M. Night Shyamalan ("The Sixth Sense") were signed on to pen the sequel in the last few years. In the end, it was a polished script by David Koepp ("War of the Worlds") that convinced Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and Harrison Ford to break out the famed fedora one more time. The film has been shooting since June in locations ranging from Connecticut to Hawaii.

The story line is being kept under wraps for now. But we do know that several new castmembers are part of the adventure. The aforementioned LaBeouf has been rumored to be playing Jones' long-lost son. And his mother could be none other than Marion Ravenwood from "Raiders of the Lost Ark." Spielberg announced that Karen Allen would reprise her role as Ravenwood during a dramatic Comic-Con presentation in July.
The film will hit theaters on May 22, 2008 and we think it will be a monster hit.

Jack Bauer Takes On Global Warming

Screenshot from 24Jack Bauer is set to tackle global warming on the hit show 24.
But the producers of 24, the American thriller, plan to make the show "carbon neutral" to "inspire its millions of viewers before it's too late". To promote the message, they are planning to tie global warming issues into the plots - which have included state-sanctioned torture and presidential assassination attempts - "when appropriate". Kiefer Sutherland, who plays the counter-terrorism agent Jack Bauer, said that global warming was "a crime for which we are all guilty". The actor added: "All of us at 24 understand the urgency of this problem and over the next year we will be implementing creative new ways to more efficiently produce our show and significantly reduce our carbon footprint. "If we don't do something about it now, this change in our climate will unleash irreversible damage."

The show will introduce a number of green initiatives, including the use of biodiesel fuels to power generators and hybrid vehicles in the production fleet. They will also email scripts to actors instead of sending them by "snail mail". A spokesman said 24 would incorporate "global warming and the importance of carbon emission reduction into storylines when appropriate".
That should be interesting. We would love nothing more than to watch the episode where Jack and company waterboard a bunch of corporate polluters.

Bourne Ultimatum Crushes Competition

Screencap from The Bourne UltimatumMatt Damon shows he has what it takes to be a top action hero: The Bourne Ultimatum crushed its competition this past weekend, making an estimated $70,181,000 with a per-theater gross of $19,175. Also opening this weekend were Hot Rod which made $5,015,000, Bratz, which made $4,310,000, and the Hector Lavoe biopic, El Cantante , which made $3,254,000 in a limited release with a very nice per-theater groos of $6,003. Tim Minear on Drive

Remember the short-lived show called Drive that Fox brutally canceled? For those of you wondering what would have happened in the rest of the aborted first season, Drivefans.com has an interesting interview in which executive producers Tim Minear and Craig Silverstein reveal their plans that could have been.
J: What's the story with Alex's wife? Was she working with the race organizers?

TM: All the way to their first meeting and courtship. At least that was one notion -- nothing was in stone by episode six.

J: Had the series gone on, how would the premise have adapted each season?

TM: New races, old players taking new roles, new players introduced.

J: How much backstory had you worked out about the people behind the race?

TM: Some.

J: I recall in one of the script drafts, the killer who off'd Susan was set up to be a menacing Duel-esque serial killer. What further plans/ideas were there for this?

TM: The killer four-by truck was going to be someone who had been injured in an earlier competition, and was getting revenge. That was one version, though we had others.

CS: One version was a young, hot, sociopath to be played by Eliza Dushku. Although the image of a half-paralyzed guy, driving the killer truck using specialized hand controls was pretty hard to resist.

J: What stories did you want to tell but due to the six episodeness of it all never got around to?

TM: All of them. I really wanted to do the story of Rob being sent back to Iraq and in the middle of the desert finding a race clue then being sent back by a high ranking official to continue the race -- and him ending up teaming up -- race-wise and romatically -- with Leigh. For instance.
This one is a must-read for Drive fans. But it makes us very grumpy as we think about what could have been.

In third place was Live Free or Die Hard, which made $17,730,149, bringing its total take to date to $84,424,123.

In fourth place was the Robin Williams comedy, License to Wed, which opened with $10,422,258. In fifth place was Even Almighty, which made another $8,719,135.

It was clearly a Transformers weekend.

Harrison Ford Is Indiana Jones Once Again

Photo of Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones 4

Director Steven Spielberg took this first photo of Harrison Ford back in the saddle for Indiana Jones IV. He looks pretty much the same, doesn't he? The official website says:
For the first time since 1989, Harrison Ford dons the familiar costume on Thursday, June 21, 2007, as the upcoming Indiana Jones adventure begins production under the direction of Steven Spielberg. The new Indiana Jones movie is set in the 1950s and stars Shia LaBeouf, Cate Blanchett, John Hurt, Ray Winstone and Jim Broadbent. The Lucasfilm Ltd. production will be released by Paramount Pictures worldwide on May 22, 2008.
Alas, Sean Connery won't be returning as Indy's dad. Connery said:
"I get asked the question so often, I thought it best to make an announcement. I thought long and hard about it and if anything could have pulled me out of retirement it would have been an Indiana Jones film. I love working with Steven and George, and it goes without saying that it is an honor to have Harrison as my son. But in the end, retirement is just too damned much fun. I, do however, have one bit of advice for Junior: Demand that the critters be digital, the cliffs be low, and for goodness sake keep that whip by your side at all times in case you need to escape from the stunt coordinator! This is a remarkable cast, and I can only say, 'Break a leg, everyone.' I'll see you on May 22, 2008, at the theater!"
We'll definitely be there!

Shia LaBeouf Nabs Indiana Jones Role

Shia LeBeouf has been cast in the most sought-after movie role today: playing the son of Indiana Jones in the next Spielberg-directed action adventure. Ok, no one is admitting that he plays Indy's son, but what else could the role be?
Indiana Jones has uncovered a new sidekick. Shia LaBeouf, the 20-year-old actor who stars in this summer's Transformers action thriller, has signed to co-star alongside Harrison Ford in the fourth Indiana Jones movie.

LaBeouf, whose Rear Window-style thriller Disturbia opens Friday is perhaps best known for his boyhood roles in Holes and the TV comedy Even Stevens. He has been the subject of speculation as an addition to the sequel's cast but was forbidden by director Steven Spielberg and producer George Lucas from revealing it until now. "Up until about two weeks ago, it was little more than a rumor," he says. "Literally, when I was saying, 'I don't know anything,' I didn't know anything. It was an act of faith. I have not read a script. I don't think anybody has."

Spielberg said in an e-mailed statement: "Shia has extraordinary range. I think of him as 'the young man for all seasons." Online fans are guessing Indiana Jones will have a son for this go-round, but LaBeouf says he can't confirm such plot points. Even the time-setting for the movie is a secret. "I can tell you I'm sort of the sidekick character, obviously," he says. "I'm sure there are a lot of laughs at my expense, and some kind of creature crawling on me." LaBeouf adds, "It's not going to be Short Round, all grown up," a reference to the fast-talking little kid from 1984's Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

*****

When he met Lucas recently at Spielberg's offices on the Universal lot, LaBeouf says he brimmed with questions but hit a wall of secrecy, even about the relic Jones will be pursuing. "Lucas looks at you and says simply, 'I can't tell you that,' " LaBeouf says. "Then when he thinks he is supposed to tell you something but isn't sure, he gets up and leaves the room, goes in to talk with Spielberg and comes back and says, 'Nope. Sorry.' "
The movie will begin shooting this summer. The release date is May 22, 2008. We have only one question: why pick Shia LaBeouf? Because we just don't get it. We were hoping that Indy would have a daughter -- one like, say, Sarah Michelle Gellar.

Brendon Frasier Signs on for Mummy 3

Brendon Frasier has signed on for the third installment of the Mummy franchise. Alas, Rachel Weisz is not coming back.
Brendan Fraser has closed a deal to return in The Mummy 3, but Rachel Weisz is not coming back, Variety reported. Rob Cohen will direct the sequel, which is expected to begin production late in the summer. It will be set in China and will introduce Jet Li as a villain. Universal is planning a summer 2008 release; the franchise has earned more than $830 million worldwide. The Mummy debuted in 1999 and The Mummy Returns in 2001.

Weisz has won an Oscar and had a baby since the last installment and has dropped out of talks to reprise her role. The Mummy 3's script is by Smallville creators Miles Millar and Alfred Gough, who will do another pass that will factor in the absence of Weisz. Universal is holding up a green light pending a final rewrite, but a late summer start date is still expected.
We think Rachel should change her mind and do the sequel. It's a guaranteed hit and the fans won't like it that she's bailed out.

Jet Li and Jackie Chan Onscreen Together For the First Time

Martial arts fans are thrilled: Jackie Chan and Jet Li will star in a movie together, for the first time. Sci Fi reports:
Lionsgate has come on board the martial-arts action film The Forbidden Kingdom, which pairs Jackie Chan and Jet Li for the first time on the big screen, Variety reported. The studio is planning a September 2008 domestic release. Casey Silver produces. The Weinstein Co. is partnering with Lionsgate on the project.

Director Rob Minkoff (The Lion King) is set to begin shooting in China on May 2 from a script by John Fusco. Action choreographer Yuen Woo-ping (The Matrix; Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) is creating the fight sequences.

Based on the Chinese legend of the monkey king, the story revolves around an American teenager who discovers the king's legendary stick weapon in a pawn shop. The teen is transported back in time to ancient China, where he joins a crew of warriors fighting to free the imprisoned king. Li is set to play two roles, that of the monkey king and the silent monk. Chan will pay the monk T'sa-Ho.
Sounds totally awesome. We can't wait!

Angelina Jolie is Wanted

Angelina Jolie's calendar is filling up fast. She just adopted a Vietnamese orphan and is heading back to the States with him tomorrow. She also just signed on to play the lead in a new film, Wanted, which is an action film based on a graphic novel. Timur Bekmambetov is directing. Morgan Freeman and James McAvoy will also star in the film, which begins shooting in Eastern Europe in May.
McAvoy will play a young man who discovers his father is an assassin, only to learn shortly thereafter that his dad has been murdered. The youth is drafted to follow in his father's footsteps. Jolie will play an assassin who teaches the ropes to the wannabe killer.

Script was originated by Michael Brandt and Derek Haas, and Jolie took the role after a rewrite by Dean Georgaris ("Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life") to tailor the character for her. Marc Platt, Jim Lemley, Jason Netter and Iain Smith will produce.

Deal marks the second recent U commitment for Jolie, who'll star this fall for director Clint Eastwood in drama "The Changeling," to be produced by Imagine Entertainment partners Brian Grazer and Ron Howard and Malpaso's Rob Lorenz.
Angelina recently told a Vietnamese newspaper that she was going to be a stay at home mom for now, to help new son Pax Thien Jolie adjust to his new life. So, we guess the kid has about six weeks to get adjusted before he, mommy, and four nannies move to Eastern Europe for awhile. Sounds about right.

Cate Blanchett May Join Indiana Jones Cast

Photo of Cate BlanchettCate Blanchett is in negotiations to star opposite Harrison Ford in the upcoming Indiana Jones movie, according to the L.A. Times.
Cate Blanchett is in negotiations to star opposite Harrison Ford in the long-awaited fourth installment of the "Indiana Jones" series, her publicist confirmed Saturday. "She is in negotiations, yes," publicist Lisa Kasteler told The Associated Press. She did not elaborate.

Filming is scheduled to begin later this year, with Steven Spielberg on board to direct. The movie is being produced by "Star Wars" creator George Lucas' Lucasfilm Ltd. Ford played Indiana Jones in 1981's "Raiders of the Lost Ark," 1984's "Temple of Doom" and 1989's "The Last Crusade." Blanchett, who won a best supporting actress Oscar in 2004 for "The Aviator," starred in last year's "Notes on a Scandal" and "Babel."
We hope the negotiations go well. We'd like to see Cate take on the bad guys by Indy's side.

300 Rules the Box Office

Photo from the 300The cgi gorefest The 300 easily won the weekend box office this past weekend making $70,885,301. The movie, which is rated R for violence, has a cast of virtual unknowns (although the freaky Persian King Xerxes will be familiar to Lost fans). The film is a based on a comic book fantasy which tells the story of the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 B.C., in which 300 noble Spartans held off the massive Persian army at a mountain pass in Greece for three days. The Iranians are furious about the film, saying it portrays the Persians as sexually deviant, violent and depraved. But since the Iranian censors pretty much object to all Western films, it's hard to get too worked up over their latest denouncements. In any event, the box office numbers were a delightful surprise to Warner Bros.

In second place was Wild Hogs, which made 27,601,291 in its second week of release. In third place was Bridge to Terabithia, which made $6,779,315 in its fourth week of release. Ghost Rider made another $6,670,463 in its fourth week of release, and Zodiac made $6,641,870 in its fourth week of release.

Bruce Willis Injured on Set

Photo of Bruce Willis Bruce Willis was injured on the set of his new movie, Live Free Or Die Hard .
The actor was kicked in the forehead during a fight scene in his new Die Hard movie on Wednesday, and was briefly hospitalised. His on-set accident came hours before Nicole Kidman was left shaken up when she was involved in a car crash on the Downtown Los Angeles set of her new zombie film The Invasion.

Like Kidman, Willis was checked over by a doctor, and then discharged. According to insiders, he was left with a gash above his right eye.
Willis was reportedly back on the set for filming the next day. The film stars Willis as officer John McClane, who attempts to stop a techno-terrorist from shutting down the nation's computer systems on the Fourth of July. The story takes place around Washington, D.C., and is being directed by Underworld: Evolution filmmaker Len Wiseman. Live Free Or Die Hard also stars Timothy Olyphant, Maggie Q and Kevin Smith. It is set for a June 29, 2007 release. You can see a trailer of Live Free or Die Hard here.

Pirates of the Caribbean 3 Publicity Pics

Pirates Publicity PhotosAin't it Cool News has their hands on some publicity pictures for the third Disney pirates film: Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. The artwork has a ghostly look to it.
These images pretty much speak for themselves. Disney is gearing up its publicity behemoth for Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End & I'm told these represent some permutation of theatrical display fodder (posters, banners, etc.)

So far, I'm diggin' the look and style of the campaign. Please Note: there's a chance this work may not be final. If true, this is still an interesting glimpse into the prmotional development process.
We like the addition of a samurai. The early expectation is that Pirates 3 will be another blockbuster for Disney.

Indiana Jones Rides Again

Photo of Indiana Jones Indiana Jones is finally ready to ride again. The BBC reports that Steven Spielberg and George Lucas have finally approved a script and are ready to start shooting in 2007, with an eye towards a May, 2008 release.
Director George Lucas says the fourth instalment in the Indiana Jones film series will start next year. Lucas said he and Steven Spielberg had recently finalised the script, and promised it was "the best one yet".

*****

Lucas, 62, has now confirmed the script is ready - after more than 10 years in development - and told the Associated Press the film was "going to be fantastic". He would not reveal any plot details, but said it would be "a character piece" including some "very interesting mysteries". At the Rome Film Festival in October, Ford announced he was "fit to play" the Jones character again. The 64-year-old actor promised he would "bring the same physical action" to a fourth movie as he did to the first three - in which he carried out many of his own stunts.

Ford added that Sean Connery may return as Indiana Jones' father, Dr Henry Jones Sr. But former James Bond star Connery, who was also at the festival, said that no offer had been made.
This is excellent news -- we loved Indiana Jones. So, will Indy have a young son or daughter in tow? And if so, who will it be? We love this and can't wait to hear more.

We're just waiting for Eragon to come out.

James Bond Beaten by Dancing Penguins

Photo from Happy Feet movie Happy Feet, which stars lots of dancing animated penguins, was tops at the box office this past weekend, beating out Casino Royale. Happy Feet made $41,533,432 at 3,804 theaters, with a per theater average of $10,918.

Casino Royale, starring Daniel Craig came in second with $40,833,156 at 3,434 theaters, for a per theater gross of $11,890. In third place was Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan, which made $14,602,874. The film so far has made $90,757,366. In fourth place was The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause with $8,302,661 and in fifth place was Will Ferrell's Stranger Than Ficiton with $6,605,197.

So, why did dancing penguins beat James Bond at the box office? We're not sure, because Casino Royale is a great, very entertaining movie. And Daniel Craig makes Bond his own. At the theater we were at on Friday, we saw hordes of harassed-looking parents toting screaming children to see Happy Feet. Maybe they were more interested in entertaining the kids than in seeing an action flick.

A Live Action Speed Racer

SciFi.com reports that the Wachowski Brothers are set to make a live action version of Speed Racer.
Producer Joel Silver has enlisted his Matrix creators, Larry and Andy Wachowski, to write and direct a big-screen, live-action version of the animated TV series Speed Racer, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The movie will be the duo's first directorial outing since completing the Silver-produced Matrix series in 2003. They are reuniting with several of the creative behind-the-scenes talents from the Matrix films, including executive producer Grant Hill and visual-effects supervisor John Gaeta, who won an Oscar for his work on The Matrix.

Based on the classic 1960s series created by anime pioneer Tatsuo Yoshida, which was retooled for North American audiences, the big-screen Speed will follow the adventures of the young race-car driver Speed in his quest for glory in his thundering gadget-laden vehicle, Mach 5. The movie will feature other characters from the show, including Speed's family and his mysterious archrival, Racer X.

Silver has been trying to get the film version off the ground since the early 1990s; in 2004, Vince Vaughn even pitched a take that cast him as Racer X. When Silver worked on V for Vendetta with the Wachowskis, he approached them about tackling the project. The duo were reluctant to do it unless they could figure out a way to bring something new to the table.
The film is set to start shooting next summer, with an eye towards a summer, 2008 release date. Go Speed Racer, Go Speed Racer, Go Speed Racer, G-o-o-o-o-o-o!

Will Brad Pitt Replace Tom Cruise as Star of Mission Impossible Films?

Tom Cruise may no longer be the star of the Mission Impossible franchise. A report today claims that he's been replaced by Brad Pitt.
Tom was recently dropped by Paramount Studios dropped because of his "unacceptable conduct" in public and the bombing box office results of his third movie in the franchise. Now it seems the studio bosses are set to turn to Brad to rescue the ailing franchise. One industry insider told Britain's London Light newspaper, " 'Mission: Impossible IV' will not include Tom's character, agent Ethan Hunt. They're considering a brief mention, saying Hunt retired to live a safe life with his new wife. They're set on Brad taking over as a gutsy new head operative who puts together his own unique team of specialists."

Studios bosses are allegedly considering offering Brad over $26 million to take on the role in the fourth movie - the biggest salary ever paid to an actor for one movie. The actor is no stranger to the genre having already had big screen success in a number of action movies, including "Mrs and Mrs Smith" and "Spy Game" opposite Robert Redford.

Brad - who has two adopted children, Maddox, five, and 18-month-old Zahara, and one biological daughter, four-month-old Shiloh Nouvel, with partner Angelina Jolie - is currently filming the latest addition in another successful franchise, "Ocean's Thirteen," in Los Angeles.
That would be a real blow to Cruise. We just hope they bring back director J.J. Abrams -- he did a fantastic job on the last film.

Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin Dies

Steve Irwin's FamilyBy now, everyone has heard the tragic news of Steve Irwin's death. Steve Irwin will be missed not only for his exciting documentaries but for his enormous contributions to conservation. Irwin referred to himself as a wild-life warrior: "I consider myself a wild-life warrior. My mission is to save the world's endangered species." You can see some clips from the Crocodile Hunter's documentaries here.

Steve Irwin also made a movie in 2002 called, The Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course. The film also starred his wife, Terri Irwin. Roger & Ebert gave the film two thumbs up. You can read Ebert's review here.
Forget the plot. The movie is really about Steve and Terri taking us on a guided tour of the crocs, snakes, deadly insects and other stars of the outback fauna. Steve's act is simplicity itself. He holds a deadly cobra, say, by its tail and looks straight at the camera and explains that the cobra has enough venom to kill him 100 times over. The cobra twists and tries to strike at Steve's bare leg. He jerks it away. Crikey! Steve's monologues about the incredible danger he's in do sometimes run a bit long, but he has the grace to interrupt them to slap at flies that are biting him.

Later we meet a "bird-eating" spider whose fangs contain venom that would kill Steve, I dunno, a thousand times over, and he pokes it with a stick to make it display its fangs, and it almost bites Steve's thumb. Crikey! Then he shows us the spider's nest, and sticks his finger down it, and yanks it back as if he's been bitten. Crikey! But he was only fooling, mate.

The movie is entertaining exactly on the level I have described it. You see a couple of likable people journeying though the outback, encountering dangerous critters and getting too close for comfort, while lecturing us on their habits and dangers and almost being killed by them. The stunts are not faked, and so there is a certain fascination. Steve and Terri are not exactly developed as deeply realized characters, and only on their Web site did I discover they were married in 1992, and in 1998 gave birth to little Bindi Sue Irwin, who is now 4, and started in as a baby by wrestling tiny gecko lizards. Crikey!
We also thought the film was fun to watch. More about the film can be found on the offical website, IMDB and Amazon.com. Irwin's passion for animals and conservation was part of his everday life. He put a lot of the money he made back into conservation efforts including purchasing land around the world for national parks and his Australian effort, the Australia Zoo. You can read more about the Australia Zoo here on the Animal Planet website. The official websites for the Crocodile Hunter and the Australia Zoo are currently overloaded but when they return they can be found at crocodilehunter.com and www.australiazoo.com.au.

Jason Statham is Cranked

Photo of Jason Statham in CrankOk, once we saw this picture, we knew that Jason Statham's new film Crank would be a must-see. Jason, on the run and killing bad guys in a hospital gown -- well, it just doesn't get any more ridiculous than that. We love it.

Here's what Jason had to say about his new film.
He says he was hooked on "Crank" from the moment he read the script. But he also was a little uncertain whether these first-time directors could handle the ambitious script. "I thought, who are these guys?" he recalls, smiling. "You need someone with experience to be able to handle something as silly and wacky as this."

But after meeting Neveldine and Taylor, who laid out their plans for the high-energy film, he was convinced that he was in good hands. "I wanted to try and do justice to their vision," Statham says.

That vision involved making a nonstop action movie with Statham doing as many of his stunts as possible. No wirework. No martial arts. Just Statham running around, battling loads of bad guys, and making it with a beautiful woman. Some of Statham's running scenes were shot with Neveldine operating the camera on inline skates, giving the sequence a smoother look than typical handheld shots.

*****

Statham appears jazzed about his newest action movie. "It's kind of a comedy in a way, and I like the fact that the violence is undiluted," he says with a Cockney accent. "It's an aggressive film and it might be a bit squeamish for some people. I guess you can't please everybody all of the time. But I know that there are some people that will get a kick out of it. That's the good thing about making movies."

So how exactly did he prepare for his action scenes? "Red Bull," he says with a hearty laugh. "Oh my God, I drank so much of it. In the scene where I rob the gas station, stupid old me decided to slurp out of the can and after about four of them I said, 'Have you got any water?' It wasn't a good feeling."
Red Bull and a hospital gown. Works for us. So when is Transporter 3 coming out, anyway?

Crank opens nationwide on September 1, 2006.

Will Mel Gibson's Career Go Apocalypto?

Photo from Mel Gibson's ApocalyptoIn the wake of Mel Gibson's drunk driving arrest, anti-Semitic tirade, fervent apology and even more fervent apology, Hollywood is buzzing about the effect that the incident will have on Mel's career.

More specifically, how will it affect his upcoming film, Apocalypto, which is being distributed by Disney? And what do the pros think he'll have to do to be forgiven by the Jewish community and by the film-going public? Time magazine consulted a few experts who had some suggestions:
1) Apologize to the people who write your paychecks: When New York Yankee slugger Jason Giambi was accused of using steroids, he expressed remorse first to his bosses, Yankee owner George Steinbrenner and the team's coaches. By staying in the organization's good graces, Giambi was able to stay on the playing field and win back fan support. "You've got to get to the people making decisions about your career," says Chris Lehane, onetime spinmeister for the Clinton White House. Gibson has already apologized to Disney, the studio releasing his film Apocalypto in December. He should keep on reaching out to his professional contacts, Lahane says. Gibson needs to show that he cares about their investment in him.

2) Apologize to your public. Rinse. Repeat. "Our country doesn't like its celebrities to be hate-mongers," says Howard Rubenstein, who has handled publicity for clients like Naomi Campbell, Leona Helmsley (and TIME magazine). "The public is quick to forgive and forget, but in this case, he may need to ask for forgiveness repeatedly." Gibson has already started this process, issuing two statements within days of the offending comments, the second more specific and remorseful than the first.

*****

4) Bare soul on camera. Once he has done the requisite soul-searching in private, Gibson should go beyond written statements and get in front of a camera to reaffirm his apology, says Lehane. "You need the emotional element that TV provides. That allows you to begin the process of turning the page."

5) Be a do-gooder. Through philanthropy, public appearances and film-making, Gibson has many avenues to express his remorse in deed, as well as word. "Maybe he goes to Israel or makes a powerful film about Israel," says Michael Sitrick, who has managed p.r. crises for Rush Limbaugh, Halle Berry and the Los Angeles Dodgers. "Maybe he does something with the Museum of Tolerance. But he has to show, not tell us, that he's sorry."
The pros say that he also really has to be sorry and that it will take a long time to recover. Unless, of course, Apocalypto breaks all box office records. Then all will be forgiven in Hollywood. And stop looking at us like that. What, you don't believe that money washes away all sins in La La Land?

Miami Vice Beats Pirates. John Tucker Not Dead Yet.

John Tucker Must DieMiami Vice toppled the Pirates 2 blockbuster according to Friday night box office estimates. John Tucker Must Die had a strong showing and almost beat out Pirates for the second slot. Here are the Friday estimates according to Box Office Mojo.

An impressive debut for John Tucker Must Die. The film managed to nearly best Pirates of the Caribbean with over 1,000 less theatres. That heavily promoted MySpace URL and funny trailer must have helped the film. Pirates of the Caribbean has already made over $340 million making it the top grossing U.S. film this year by over $100 million. However, Pirates 2 still has way to go to catch the top worldwide grossing film this year, The Da Vinci Code, which has made over $740 million worldwide. In other box office news, The Devil Wears Prada is still bringing movie goers to the theatres -- it recently passed the $100 million mark.

Daniel Craig Already Signed For Second Bond Film

Photo of Daniel Craig USA Today reports that actor Daniel Craig has already been asked back to reprise his role as James Bond in another film, although the current film hasn't even hit theaters yet.
The producers behind Casino Royale, this fall's return to action for agent 007, said Thursday that new star Daniel Craig will reprise the role in a second Bond flick due out May 2, 2008.

"As we wrap production on Casino Royale, we couldn't be more excited about the direction the franchise is heading with Daniel Craig," producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli said in a news release from Sony Pictures. "Daniel has taken the origins of Ian Fleming's James Bond portraying, with emotional complexity, a darker and edgier 007."

Craig was chosen last year to replace Pierce Brosnan as Bond, the British super-spy who likes his martinis "shaken, not stirred." The 2008 release will be the 22nd film in the action franchise, whose previous Bonds included Sean Connery, Roger Moore and Timothy Dalton.
Shouldn't they at least wait to see how Casino Royale does at the box office? And what the fans think?
