Posted on January 18, 2015

American Sniper won the box office this weekend with a record setting $90 million weekend. This was the biggest January weekend by far. The second best January opening is Avatar which made $68 million in 2010. The film will also set a record for the Martin Luther King holiday weekend.

American Sniper stars Bradley Cooper and is directed by Clint Eastwood. The film was nominated for Best Picture. Cooper also received a Best Actor nod. However, Eastwood was snubbed in the Best Director category. The film has an A+ CinemaScore. The film's monster opening could pose a problem for next week's opening films, which include The Boy Next Door, Mortdecai and Black Sea.

The Wedding Ringer opened in second and made $21 million. This was a good opening for the comedy starring Kevin Hart, Josh Gad and Kaley Cuoco. Paddington opened in third and made $19.2 million. Paddington has a great A Cinemascore and The Wedding Ringer has an A-.

Paddington was followed by Taken 3, which made $14 million during its second weekend in theaters. Taken 3 won the box office last weekend. It was followed by Selma, The Imitation Game and Into the Woods. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 made another $1.8 million over the weekend to bring its total gross to $332.4 million. It is now just $700,000 away from passing Guardians of the Galaxy to be the top grossing film on 2014.
