Lassie Comes Home Again

Lassie Come HomeHere is some hope for the parent tired of the barrage of children's animated movies. The always reliable Lassie is returning to the big screen in Lassie, which is a remake of the 1943 Lassie Come Home film. Like the 1943 movie, the new Lassie movie is also based on Eric Knight's classic novel. Starring in the film with Lassie are John Lynch, Samantha Morton and Peter O'Toole. The film's website has a cute feature that allows your child to get a photograph with Lassie. You just upload a your child's photograph to the website, select one of three frames and then drag one of the Lassie images provided onto your photograph. If, after seeing the movie, your child wants a collie, a website called The Lassie Network has already prepared a faq called Do you want a dog just like Lassie?. The Lassie Network website also has a great deal of information about Lassie including photos of Lassie from the premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival.

Conan Rocked the Emmys

Photo of Conan O'Brien on the Emmys In case you missed the Emmys (or just want to see what all the fuss was about) here's the link to the video of Conan O'Brien's hilarious opening film which has Conan crash landing on a desert island, then wandering through the sets of various hit shows, including Lost (where Conan suddenly has the most amazing abs), 24 (where he interrupts a serious mission where millions might die if Jack Bauer doesn't get through to the president immediatley), House (where he's insultingly diagnosed by the doc himself), Dateline (where Conan is mistaken for a child predator) and South Park (where he meets Tom Cruise who refuses to come out of the closet).

The skit was obviously filmed far in advance of the broadcast with Conan flying to Hawaii to shoot on the Lost set. It had nothing to do with the tragic plane crash in Kentucky, which was a small commuter plane that never even got airborne. NBC apolgized all over the place, but we think it was a tempest in a teapot. Conan was hilarious: and his Music Man song and dance number was just too funny. He needs to be invited back next year.

Jason Statham is Cranked

Photo of Jason Statham in CrankOk, once we saw this picture, we knew that Jason Statham's new film Crank would be a must-see. Jason, on the run and killing bad guys in a hospital gown -- well, it just doesn't get any more ridiculous than that. We love it.

Here's what Jason had to say about his new film.
He says he was hooked on "Crank" from the moment he read the script. But he also was a little uncertain whether these first-time directors could handle the ambitious script. "I thought, who are these guys?" he recalls, smiling. "You need someone with experience to be able to handle something as silly and wacky as this."

But after meeting Neveldine and Taylor, who laid out their plans for the high-energy film, he was convinced that he was in good hands. "I wanted to try and do justice to their vision," Statham says.

That vision involved making a nonstop action movie with Statham doing as many of his stunts as possible. No wirework. No martial arts. Just Statham running around, battling loads of bad guys, and making it with a beautiful woman. Some of Statham's running scenes were shot with Neveldine operating the camera on inline skates, giving the sequence a smoother look than typical handheld shots.

*****

Statham appears jazzed about his newest action movie. "It's kind of a comedy in a way, and I like the fact that the violence is undiluted," he says with a Cockney accent. "It's an aggressive film and it might be a bit squeamish for some people. I guess you can't please everybody all of the time. But I know that there are some people that will get a kick out of it. That's the good thing about making movies."

So how exactly did he prepare for his action scenes? "Red Bull," he says with a hearty laugh. "Oh my God, I drank so much of it. In the scene where I rob the gas station, stupid old me decided to slurp out of the can and after about four of them I said, 'Have you got any water?' It wasn't a good feeling."
Red Bull and a hospital gown. Works for us. So when is Transporter 3 coming out, anyway?

Crank opens nationwide on September 1, 2006.

Universal's Idlewild came in eighth with a disappointing estimated take of $5,892,000.

Savvy Lucasfilm Supports Star Wars Video Spoofs

Colbert Star Wars VideoFans of Star Wars spoofs and parodies on YouTube were happy when several Star Wars spoofs returned to YouTube after they had been removed. Lucasfilm said they did not request the videos to be removed. Lucasfilm also posted the following message on its blog.
Lucasfilm has been informed that YouTube recently removed from its site several fan-made Star Wars spoofs and parodies. We would like the fan film community to know that this was not done at our request.

Apparently the action was taken by YouTube as a result of a misunderstanding of a request to remove an item containing material taken from starwars.com without our permission. We have asked YouTube to restore any works that they inadvertently removed.
You can see the Star Wars spoofs here. Stephen Colbert has also joined in the Star Wars fun with some jedi action of his own. He created a short video of himself fighting with a light saber in front of a green screen and challenged video makers to turn it into cool Jedi videos. Some of the submissions have been very good so far. You can see them on Colbert Nation website.

Movie to be Made Based on Amazing Live Sea-Monkeys

Amazing Live Sea MonkeysVariety reports that Michael Birnbaum has cut a deal with Transcience Corp. to create a movie based on the Sea-Monkeys toys.
Empire Pictures has struck a deal with Transcience Corp. to develop an animated film and possible franchise from the infamous children's toy line "The Amazing Live Sea-Monkeys." Under the deal, Empire acquired entertainment rights to the line, which has been on the market for 45 years and sold in more than 50 countries.

Empire founder and prexy Michael Birnbaum is focusing first on an animated feature, but possible spinoffs down the line could include a television series and merchandising. Birnbaum currently is meeting with writers to develop a take for the story before shopping the project to studios.

Product line features the tiny pets, which hatch instantly and live up to two years in a special tank. Their bigscreen story will be set in a microscopic ocean world, Birnbaum told Daily Variety.

"I grew up with Sea-Monkeys," he said. "The property's instant name recognition on a global basis makes it a platform from which to launch an animated film franchise."
Sea-Monkeys are still sold today. You can find them on Amazon.com and on the official Sea-Monkeys website. Cinematical thinks Birnbaum might be envisioning success like the Smurfs tv series experienced. However, the Smurfs were much cuter than brine shrimp can be made to be. You can read more about the possible Sea-Monkeys movie at Chud.com, Film Rotation and Comingsoon.net.

Sci Fi Axes Stargate-SG 1

Photo from Stargate SG-1Sci Fi Channel has axed our beloved Stargate SG-1.
Sci Fi Channel is grounding "Stargate SG-1," the longest-running science-fiction series on U.S. television to date. The cable network has decided not to order additional episodes beyond the show's current 10th season, but it has picked up a fourth season of its more-popular spinoff, "Stargate Atlantis."

"Stargate SG-1," based on the 1994 movie starring Kurt Russell and James Spader, spent its first five years on Showtime -- which annoyed the show's producers by demanding full-frontal nudity -- before migrating to Sci Fi. Its 200th episode aired last Friday. "Having achieved so much over the course of the past 10 years, Sci Fi believes that the time is right to make this season their last on the channel," Sci Fi said.

The show's ratings have softened in recent years and series star Richard Dean Anderson left last season, but it boasts a strong fan base, with as many as nine official conventions taking place worldwide every year. Producer MGM is exploring the possibility of taking the series to yet another outlet. "MGM has tremendous amount of confidence in 'Stargate,' and we are vigorously working to continue the franchise," studio spokesman Jeff Pryor said. The final three episodes of "Stargate SG-1" are slated to air on Sci Fi Channel next year. Both "Stargate SG-1" and "Atlantis" also run in syndication.
Bad Sci Fi channel!! Bad! You get a big time out, starting right now. And you can't leave that corner until you renew Stargate for another season. Oh, and Richard Dean Anderson: if ever you were ever going to decide to come back, this would be the time. Living in Canada isn't that bad -- in fact, it's perfectly lovely, as are the people. We know your family would adjust. And yes, we're selfish, so deal with it.

Talledega Nights Holds Off Snakes on a Plane For Box Office Victory

Talledega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby fought off stiff competition from Snakes on a Plane to retain the top box office spot this past weekend, making an estimated $14,100,000. Snakes on a Plane came in second with $13,850,000, averaging a nice $3,895 per theater. Oliver Stone's World Trade Center was in third place; to date the film has made $45,005,000. Snakes on a Plane actually opened on Thursday night, so if those totals were counted toward the weekend take, Snakes won the box office with a total take of $15.3 million.

Universal's college comedy, Accepted came in fourth with $10,112,000, and the new Hilary Duff film, Material Girls, came in ninth with $4,620,000. Little Miss Sunshine went into wider release and made an estimated $5.7 million while playing at only 691 theaters.

There were six films all aimed at the same demographic, which led to the strange, spread-out box office results over the weekend. It will be interesting to see how these films hold up next weekend.

Update

The final weekend box office numbers came in and it turns out that Snakes on a Plane made just enough to beat out Talledega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby for the #1 spot. Snakes made $13,806,311 to Talledega Nights box office take of $13,755,387. Step Up also earned $10,157,605 which was enough to bump Accepted out of the 4th slot.

Snakes on a Plane Ready to Bite Into Box Office

Snakes on a Plane Blog Post Graph Today, we we finally see how Snakes on a Plane does at the box office after the amazing Internet buzz the film has enjoyed for the past several months. The film has been widely discussed on blogs and on web forums. The Technorati blog search engine shows over 50,000 blog posts about Snakes on a Plane. Recently, posts have spiked to around 3,000 per day as you can see by the graph on the right. The buzz has also led to the publishing of several books, including Snakes on a Plane: The Guide to the Internet Ssssssensation by David Waldon. There's even Snakes on a Plane jewelry.

If Snakes on the Plane has a big box office score it could mean that fans will get more input on some future films. And it will definitely mean more movie studio executives will be keeping an eye on Internet buzz. The buzz began when Samuel L. Jackson threatened to quit if the studio changed the title of the movie. Even more buzz was generated when screenwriter Josh Friedman suggested a hit line for the film in this post on his blog.

A Hollywood Reporter news story cites industry experts who say the film could make between $20 to $30 million.
New Line remains confident. The studio is opening the film in 3,555 theaters, the widest release for an R-rated New Line film ever -- 630 more than "Wedding Crashers" last year. Even if it opens at the low end of expectations, most handicappers are confident that "Snakes" will be the top grosser of the frame. Estimates for the $35 million production range from the low-$20 millions to the low-$30 millions.
There is no competing horror movie opening this weekend, so Snakes on a Plane should do well. This will confirm what we already know -- that Internet buzz can truly boost a film's performance at the box office. The only downside of Snakes being a box office smash is that we may have to deal with all sorts of "Something on a Something" sequels. You know, Snakes on a Boat, Snakes on a Train, Snakes on Your Bike, Snakes on a Segway. And when they run out of Snakes titles, they could always go for the cute, with Kittens on a Plane. That sounds like a good holiday movie.

Jessica Biel and The Illusionist

Photo from The IllusionistJessica Biel discusses her role as Princess Sophie in the new film The Illusionist, which also stars Edward Norton and Paul Giametti.
"I just tried to create a woman that you are instantly attracted to, not just because of what she looks like on the outside but because of her brain and because of her wit and because you know that just looking in her eyes, she's got passion and there's something going on under there and she's not just walking around being a duchess. She wants more out of life. That's what I felt about Sophie. She always wanted more. She doesn"t want to be a duchess and she doesn"t want to be somebody's wife. She wants to be in love and she wants to do something with her life. And I felt if I could create that person, then you would remember seeing her on screen and you would think that you see her more than you actually do."

With such a modern feminist outlook, Biel could easily relate to Sophie despite the time difference. "I felt like she could have easily been me, just put back in a time where I was restricted by so many things, society's restrictions and family and all the stuff that you have to not do and not say and everything. I was intrigued with bringing that person to life. I also had only done modern characters, who were very expressive and talk with their hands and this and that and with her, she's just bubbling under the surface at every moment, there's so much going on, but everything's placid and perfect up here. So I was really interested in working with those elements, as well as an accent, which I'd never done before, and dressing up and really creating a person and really stepping into the shoes of someone that I really had no idea or I had no previous experience."

Accents and corsets are hard enough to pull off, but Biel had to turn it on at a moment's notice. "It was really last minute and kind of chaotic. The person who was supposed to be playing the role, I don't know who that was or what happened, but there was an opening and literally at 6 p.m. one night I got a frantic call from my agent, it's like, 'Can you do this audition tomorrow? Can you have an accent? And can you be great?' So I went in and I read with the casting director and we worked it through and she sent it to Neil, who was already in Prague. This was like two weeks before they were going to shoot. And he liked it and Edward hadn't left yet, so they brought me back the next day to read with Edward and I just thought, 'You know, I've got nothing to lose. I've got one opportunity. I'm gonna go for it.'
The Illusionist is set in the early 1900s in Vienna and is based on the short story, "Eisenheim the Illusionist," by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Steven Millhauser. It's a mystery, essentially, with lots of atmosphere and a love triangle, which looks quite interesting.

Jennifer Garner Hospitalized for Heat Exhaustion

Jennifer Garner was hospitalized for heat exhaustion on the set of her new film.
It has been revealed that Jennifer Garner was hospitalized overnight for heat exhaustion Friday on the set of her new flick The Kingdom in the Arizona desert. Garner is truly loved: Her hub, Ben Affleck, flew from Boston to his wife's side the second he heard the news.

Jen was fine by the morning. "She's great. Absolutely fabulous," Affleck told Access Hollywood. "Today she's in the desert, upside-down spinning around in a car that's pretending to have been blown up in 110-degree heat in Phoenix. "That's my wife."
Because of Jen's excellent reputation for being a hard-working professional on set, we know that it really was heat exhaustion. Unlike in the case of a certain red-headed party girl who seems to check into the hospital for "exhaustion" of one kind or another on a regular basis.

Talledega Nights Holds On to First Place

Talledega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby hung on to the #1 spot at the box office this past weekend, with box office receipts of a $23,000,000. That brings the gross of the film to $91,217,000. The dance film, Step Up came in second with $21,065,000. Oliver Stone's World Trade Center came in at third place with $19,016,000. New Yorkers, in particular, weren't thrilled with the idea of a 9/11 movie so soon after the event and the rest of the national movie audience just didn't seem interested either.

Earlier this month, Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly showed up Larry King Live to promote Talledega Nights film and did the entire interview in character as Ricky Bobby and his best friend, Cal Naughton, Jr. In a hilarious segment, racing legend Dale Earnhardt, Jr. called in to give the two racers some grief.
FERRELL: (INAUDIBLE). KING: Hold it. I've got word from the control room that Dale Earnhardt, Jr. is on the phone with us right now. Dale, are you there?

DALE EARNHARDT, JR.: Yes, I'm here, Larry. You hear me?

KING: I hear you fine.

EARNHARDT: I got a big old party going on downstairs, didn't know if you could hear me. Let me just say to Ricky and Cal you guys are lucky I'm not in the studio calling me a loser. You guys are the losers. I know 2-year-olds that drive better than you guys.

KING: Whoa!

FERRELL: OK, you know what is that right, Dale? Hey, Dale...

EARNHARDT: Yo.

FERRELL: ...I think the only number you may be, number eight, but I'm number one OK?

REILLY: Yes, dude, yes. Ricky is number one.

EARNHARDT: Oh, is that right? You want to talk about numbers? What number are you? What number are you Cal? In my book you're just a big zero. Heck the only time you ever won was when everybody else in the race was disqualified.

FERRELL: Hey, don't you talk to my, you know, friend that way, OK, you rookie. Why don't you just get back behind your Big Wheel and drive away.

REILLY: Yes, or a tricycle.

FERRELL: Yes.

REILLY: Yes, a tricycle because tricycles are for little babies who aren't grownups. And I am number two by the way.

KING: Hold it guys. Wait, let's take a breather and just agree to disagree, OK? Dale, I appreciate you popping by. I just think it's best to call it a draw and let the three of you hash it out in the next big race.

EARNHARDT: Oh, I'll hash it out all right. I'll make hash out of Ricky Bobby's track record that's what I'll do.

KING: OK, Dale, you'll have your chance...

REILLY: I'll make hash browns out of your face.

KING: ...to do that next time at Talladega. Thanks for calling Dale.

EARNHARDT: My pleasure, Larry, just next time have some real drivers on the show.

FERRELL: Man.

KING: Let's discuss politics, guys. Ricky, in the past you've seen Richard Petty run for Congress. You're extremely popular. You ever thought of getting involved in politics?

FERRELL: I have, Larry. I have indeed. I have a lot of ideas. The first thing I think I'd like to do is get rid of speed limits and...

KING: All speed limits.

FERRELL: All speed limits. I don't -- I think they're useless and they just slow people down and when you have to -- when you have to transport goods or get somewhere in a hurry...

REILLY: Yes, you're in a hurry, exactly.

FERRELL: ... you got to go.

REILLY: You don't need a government telling you how fast you need to get to your meeting.

FERRELL: And you can also put numbers on cars like they do...

KING: Put numbers on them.

FERRELL: Yes. And also like have flagmen at every intersection. That's just how I'd start.
You can read the entire transcript here.

Photo of Jack Black in Nacho Libre Jack Black has agreed to take on hosting duties for the MTV Movie Awards.
The MTV Music Video Awards are about to get a dose of Jack Black. The actor-slash-rocker will host this year's version of the anything-can-happen extravaganza, set for Aug. 31, MTV announced Thursday. "Prepare yourself for a rip snortin' humdinger," Black said.

The awards will air live from Radio City Music Hall in New York. Performers include Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, Panic! at the Disco and Ludacris. Black, 34, is the "perfect mix of comedy, rock, irreverence and star power," MTV President Christina Norman said in a statement.

Lost Returns in October

Photo of Josh Holloway from Lost In a change from its original plan, ABC has announced that it will begin the new season of Lost in October, show a number of episodes without breaks, then do a long break over the holidays and finish the season in the spring. Sci Fi reports that filming resumed in Hawaii on August 7th.
ABC also offered a new synopsis of what to expect: Jack (Matthew Fox), Kate (Evangeline Lilly) and Sawyer (Josh Holloway) open the season in captivity as prisoners of the Others. Just who these Others are and what they want are primary questions season three will explore.

Michael Emerson joins the regular cast in his ongoing role as Henry Gale, leader of the Others. Romance looms on the horizon as Jack's interests veer toward a mysterious new woman, whose motives may be questionable. Sun (Yunjin Kim) and Jin (Daniel Dae Kim) will continue to celebrate their pregnancy, but is the child really Jin's? Locke (Terry O'Quinn) and Sayid (Naveen Andrews) will band together with some of the other survivors and journey across the island in an attempt to free Jack, Kate and Sawyer. Charlie (Dominic Monaghan) will attempt to return into the good graces of Claire (Emilie de Ravin) and her baby, Aaron, but can he be trusted to stay clean and sober? The fates of Locke, Desmond (Henry Ian Cusick) and Mr. Eko (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) in the aftermath of the implosion of the hatch are answered. Will Penny Widmore find the island and her long-lost love, Desmond, and can the survivors find a way to interact with the outside world?

Meanwhile, Variety reported that Kiele Sanchez will join the cast as a woman named Nikki, who is possibly a love interest for a new character played by Rodrigo Santoro. In addition, Elizabeth Mitchell joins the cast as Juliet.
The new season will premiere on October 4th on ABC at 9pm Eastern time. And we can't wait!

Helena Bonham-Carter to Join Harry Potter Cast

Helena Bonham-Carter has joined the cast of the next Harry Potter film. Helena will play Beatrix Lestrange.
Helena Bonham Carter has won the role of evil Death Eater Bellatrix Lestrange in the next Harry Potter film. The Charlie and the Chocolate Factory actress will play one of Lord Voldemort's followers in the forthcoming Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. The 40-year-old star, who has been cultivating quirky roles in recent years but made her name starring in a succession of bodice-rippers, is one of several newcomers to the Potter franchise.

Imelda Staunton is playing dark arts teacher Dolores Umbridge, George Harris is Kingsley Shacklebolt, Natalia Tena is Nymphadora Tonks, Kathryn Hunter is Mrs Figg and a 14-year-old actress, Evanna Lynch, is Luna Lovegood. The fifth big-screen Potter adaptation is being directed by award-winning British filmmaker David Yates, whose other movies include The Girl in the Cafe, Sex Traffic, and State of Play.

Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter), Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley) and Emma Watson (Hermione Granger) will reprise their roles as the close-knit teen wizards. The cast also includes regulars Robbie Coltrane, Ralph Fiennes, Michael Gambon, Gary Oldman, Alan Rickman, Maggie Smith, Emma Thompson and Julie Walters. The film, which will have a score by composer Nicholas Hooper, is being released next year.
Finally, some good Harry Potter news. Because we really, really don't want to hear any more about Daniel Radcliffe doing a nude scene in the (rather weird and unpleasant) play Equus.

Talledega Nights Tops Box Office

Photo from Talledega NightsRicky Bobby really is #1 -- at the box office. Will Ferrell's new NASCAR comedy, Talledega Nights, raked in $47 million at the box office this past weekend, delighting Sony execs.

Paramount's children's film, Barnyard, was second with an estimated weekend take of $16,040,000. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest held onto third place, making another $11,011,000 for a total U.S. take of $379,709,000. The horror film, The Descent, came in fifth with an opening weekend take of $8,800,000 and surprisingly good reviews.

In the documentary category, Al Gore's excellent global warming documentary has now made $21,225,000 in a very limited release. It's really a must-see.

Ricky Bobby Zooms Into Theaters

Photo from Talledega NightsRicky Bobby and his NASCAR team zoom into theaters today with Talledega Nights, and we're predicting a very, very nice box office. The film's plot is a cross between a comedy and a classic sports movie.
Ferrell plays Ricky Bobby, a hotshot NASCAR driver whose No. 1 status is threatened by a flamboyantly gay French driver, Jean Girard (Sacha Baron Cohen), who brings his husband to the track and specializes in racetrack existentialism (he reads Camus’ “The Stranger” while he’s driving). Ricky is also losing his groupie wife (Leslie Bibb) to his best pal, Cal Naughton Jr. (John C. Reilly), who insists on maintaining their buddy relationship even after the divorce.

Ricky’s life is further complicated by a deadbeat dad, Reese (Gary Cole), who turns up every decade or so to give Ricky useless advice about losing and winning. Cole, who milks a remarkable number of laughs from this sketchiest of characters, revels in the utter worthlessness of the man. It’s an inspired portrait of anti-social dementia, and Ferrell & Co. should be given full credit for letting him run with it.

Also lending a touch of class to the proceedings are three relatively recent supporting-player Oscar nominees. Michael Clarke Duncan (from The Green Mile) does comic wonders with what could have been the peripheral role of Lucius Washington, Ricky’s sardonic crew chief, who often represents the sole voice of sanity.
Will Ferrell discusses how the film came about and the character of driver Ricky Bobby:
Talladega Nights may be a comedy, but all of the driving stunts are real. "What we were hoping to do was obviously make a sports comedy which the sport that's involved has to have some awareness that we're having fun with what they do and that sort of thing. At the same time we made it clear to them that we wanted to make the racing look clear, real and intense and we wanted the footage to be as if it was from a serious racing movie. So we feel like we sort of split the difference. In early screenings of the film with friends and colleagues who were writers and other comedians, most of them having no knowledge of the sport their reaction was like, 'Wow. You really make the sport look really cool.' So we were just trying to split the difference, but it wasn't about making a film of fans in overalls in the stands and that sort of thing because if you go to these races you see a wide range of a type of fan and actually I don't know if we ever really met a drive who is like Ricky Bobby. I mean he is a throwback because the guys that you meet now are real polite and nice and they have so much responsibility that they kind of can't race the way that Ricky likes to race and that sort of thing. So the ultimate goal was to have a fun movie for people who didn't know anything about racing and then also to have a little fun and pay homage to the race fans who enjoy the sport."

Ricky Bobby was never intended to be a scathing commentary on drivers. He is a pure creation of Ferrell's. "It was more just someone who would be fun for me to play and cocky and southern were one of my goals. I mean it was also at the same time something that's always fun to have, however idiotic the character is or brace, to have some underlying thing of humanity. Ricky is cocky, but there is a part of him that's like still needs his friends to tell him he's on the right track. So he doesn't even know for sure."
Ferrell says that Talledega Nights is the second film in his "Mediocre American Man" series which began with (the hilarious) Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy.

Will Mel Gibson's Career Go Apocalypto?

Photo from Mel Gibson's ApocalyptoIn the wake of Mel Gibson's drunk driving arrest, anti-Semitic tirade, fervent apology and even more fervent apology, Hollywood is buzzing about the effect that the incident will have on Mel's career.

More specifically, how will it affect his upcoming film, Apocalypto, which is being distributed by Disney? And what do the pros think he'll have to do to be forgiven by the Jewish community and by the film-going public? Time magazine consulted a few experts who had some suggestions:
1) Apologize to the people who write your paychecks: When New York Yankee slugger Jason Giambi was accused of using steroids, he expressed remorse first to his bosses, Yankee owner George Steinbrenner and the team's coaches. By staying in the organization's good graces, Giambi was able to stay on the playing field and win back fan support. "You've got to get to the people making decisions about your career," says Chris Lehane, onetime spinmeister for the Clinton White House. Gibson has already apologized to Disney, the studio releasing his film Apocalypto in December. He should keep on reaching out to his professional contacts, Lahane says. Gibson needs to show that he cares about their investment in him.

2) Apologize to your public. Rinse. Repeat. "Our country doesn't like its celebrities to be hate-mongers," says Howard Rubenstein, who has handled publicity for clients like Naomi Campbell, Leona Helmsley (and TIME magazine). "The public is quick to forgive and forget, but in this case, he may need to ask for forgiveness repeatedly." Gibson has already started this process, issuing two statements within days of the offending comments, the second more specific and remorseful than the first.

*****

4) Bare soul on camera. Once he has done the requisite soul-searching in private, Gibson should go beyond written statements and get in front of a camera to reaffirm his apology, says Lehane. "You need the emotional element that TV provides. That allows you to begin the process of turning the page."

5) Be a do-gooder. Through philanthropy, public appearances and film-making, Gibson has many avenues to express his remorse in deed, as well as word. "Maybe he goes to Israel or makes a powerful film about Israel," says Michael Sitrick, who has managed p.r. crises for Rush Limbaugh, Halle Berry and the Los Angeles Dodgers. "Maybe he does something with the Museum of Tolerance. But he has to show, not tell us, that he's sorry."
The pros say that he also really has to be sorry and that it will take a long time to recover. Unless, of course, Apocalypto breaks all box office records. Then all will be forgiven in Hollywood. And stop looking at us like that. What, you don't believe that money washes away all sins in La La Land?

Heath Ledger is the New Joker

Photo of Heath LedgerHeath Ledger has been cast as The Joker in the next Batman film.
Batman is heading into a sequel, this time titled "The Dark Knight," and he will face-off against the Joker. Christian Bale will reprise his role as Bruce Wayne/Batman and Christopher Nolan is returning to the directing chair. Heath Ledger has signed on to play the sardonic and murderous villain the Joker, immortalized by Jack Nicholson in Tim Burton's 1989 "Batman."

The script will be written by Nolan's brother, Jonathan, from a story by Christopher Nolan and David Goyer. Christopher Nolan and Goyer co-wrote last year's "Batman Begins."
Production is scheduled to begin in early 2007. Rumors had Phillip Seymour Hoffman considering the role of Penguin in the film, but no word yet on whether that bit of casting will pan out.

Heath Ledger seems like an unusual choice for The Joker, we have to admit. But he's a good actor and will no doubt bring a new interpretation to the role that should be pretty interesting.
