Sunset Tan Returns

Photo from Sunset TanAt last, our long national nightmare is over. Sunset Tan returns to the airwaves tonight for the first of six brand new episodes. Tonight on E! we see the first new episode entitled "Sunset Tan: New Kid on the Block."
Nick's girlfriend, Ania, has joined the staff of Sunset Tan. The Olly girls decide to take tanning seriously and study for the Smart Tan Certification.

Rating: TV-14

Scheduled to Air:
Friday, Aug 31, 6:00 p
Monday, Sep 3, 10:30 a
Nick's girlfriend? Wasn't she always on the phone complaining to Nick night and day in Season 1? Now she works at Sunset Tan? We predict a major breakup. And the Olly Girls are studying for their Smart Tan Certification? Brilliant! Will they pass? We suppose it depends what the test is like...if they're any writing involved, probably not. If they just show up and get painted from head to toe in fake swimsuits (like they did for a party at the Playboy Mansion awhile back), they'll pass with flying colors.

Victoria Beckham Meets Ugly Betty

It's confirmed: Victoria Beckham will be guest starring on an episode of Ugly Betty this season and we can hardly wait!
"Ugly Betty" is getting the Posh treatment. Victoria Beckham plays herself when she guest stars this fall on ABC's hit comedy sendup of the fashion magazine world. Beckham plays a celebrity bridesmaid to the scheming, conniving Wilhelmina Slater (Vanessa Williams), who has succeeded in luring media magnate Bradford Meade (Alan Dale) to the altar.

That's all the detail out of ABC, except for this additional hint: "Who knows what will happen when 'bridezilla' Wilhelmina takes that march down the aisle, especially with 'Posh Spice' leading the way?" The season premiere is set for Sept. 27.
We're somewhat surprised that she'll be playing herself. We were hoping to see her acting chops!

Dave Letterman to Appear on Oprah

David Letterman has at long last been invited to be a guest on The Oprah Winfrey Show.
Feud? What feud? David Letterman will make his first appearance on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" next month, another sign the talk-show titans have buried the hatchet after a rift that lasted more than a decade.

Letterman will tape the interview, a rare appearance on someone else's show, on Sept. 10 at Madison Square Garden in New York, Winfrey's production company announced Wednesday. Their reconciliation began in 2005 when Winfrey appeared on CBS' "Late Show with David Letterman." It was Winfrey's first guest appearance with Letterman, though she twice appeared on his NBC show before the comic jumped networks in 1993. Letterman frequently joked about Winfrey, and she rejected repeated offers to appear on his program. In 2003, Winfrey told Time magazine she wouldn't appear with Letterman because she had been "completely uncomfortable" as the target of his jokes.

When Winfrey appeared on Letterman's show two years ago, she told him, "I want you to know, it's really over, whatever you thought was happening." Letterman responded: "Are you sure it's over?"
What a glorious day for Dave! After ten years, he finally gets to be on the Oprah show. Will he behave himself? Surely he won't pull out any "Uma/Oprah" jokes? Let's hope they do a nutty cooking segment. Those are always good. Or maybe he'll bring his baby. That works.

Keanu Reeves Signed For The Day the Earth Stood Still Remake

Keanu Reeves has signed to play the human-appearing alien Klaatu in a remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still.
Twentieth Century Fox has set Keanu Reeves to star in "The Day the Earth Stood Still," its re-imagining of the 1951 Robert Wise-directed sci-fi classic. Reeves committed over the weekend to play Klaatu, a humanoid alien who arrives on Earth accompanied by an indestructible, heavily armed robot and a warning to world leaders that their continued aggression will lead to annihilation by species watching from afar.

Erwin Stoff is producing, with Scott Derrickson ("The Exorcism of Emily Rose") directing from a script by David Scarpa. Reeves' commitment puts the picture on track for a late fall or early 2008 production start. Studio sees it as a tentpole. The Klaatu role was originated by Michael Rennie. The 1951 film's premise, a response to the rise of the Cold War after WWII, is being updated, and the film will use advances in visual effects.
Rumors have Angelina Jolie being offered the female lead in the film, but no one has been signed yet.

Travolta to Star in Comedic Remake of Dallas

Here's a news item that horrified us. Variety is reporting that John Travolta is set to play J.R. Ewing in a Dallas movie that's a comedy. Yes, that's right -- a comedy.
Regency and 20th Century Fox are overhauling the bigscreen adaptation of TV series "Dallas," about the oil-rich Ewing clan, and this time they're drilling for laughs. Betty Thomas, the director who mined two spoof movie hits from "The Brady Bunch," is in discussions to direct. Pam Brady, who most recently scripted "Hot Rod," is penning the script. John Travolta remains attached to play slimy oil tycoon J.R. Ewing.

When the movie was derailed late last year, Gurinder Chadha ("Bend It Like Beckham") was directing. Luke Wilson was attached to play Bobby Ewing with Shirley MacLaine to play Miss Ellie, while producers were talking with Meg Ryan to play Sue Ellen after Jennifer Lopez dropped out.
What a stupid project. Have the studio heads lost their minds? Here's an idea: buy an original script from someone! We're sick to death of remakes. And Dallas was not a comedy -- at least not intentionally. It's was a nighttime soap that had a huge following. It sounds anything but funny to us.

Cate Blanchett Plays Bob Dylan

Here is some footage of Cate Blanchett playing Bob Dylan in an upcoming biopic. Yes, that's right -- she's playing a man in the film. Several other actors will also play Dylan as he ages. That's David Cross as Allen Ginsberg. It's pretty freaky. Does Cate playing a man effectively equal Oscar nomination?

Kristen Bell Moves to Heroes

Now that Veronica Mars is defunct, star Kristen Bell has a new gig: she's moving to Heroes.
Erstwhile small-screen sleuth Kristen Bell is joining the cast of the hit NBC drama for a multiepisode arc, the network announced Monday.

Bell is on track to make her Heroes debut in October. Producers aren't tipping their hands to the exact nature of her character, but, per NBC, she'll play "a sexy, intriguing, mysterious young lady" named Elle, with ties to Peter (Milo Ventimiglia), Claire (Hayden Panettiere) and Claire's father, aka HRG (Jack Coleman). While Elle makes the scene with a bang-committing a "terrible crime"-it will be unclear whether she's really good or possibly the next Sylar.

"This was not easy to pull off," Heroes' mastermind Tim Kring said in a statement. "But since we're an ensemble show, with many arcs playing out through the year, we found a way to jump into a small window in [Bell's] schedule. "I pitched her the idea we have for the character, which she loved, and we're off and running."
The next Sylar?? That should certainly be interesting. We'd love to watch Kristen be a bad, bad girl.

Rush Hour 3 Tops the Box Office

Screen shot from Rush Hour 3Rush Hour 3 topped the box office this past weekend, making $49,100,158, with a $12,996 average per theater take. It took six years for the sequel to be made, mostly because Chris Tucker just hasn't felt like making movies, which is a shame. The take wasn't as big as Rush Hour 2, but give the lengthy time between sequels, it did very well. In second place was The Bourne Ultimatum, which made another $32,879,125, putting its gross to date at $131,552,425. The Simpsons held onto third place, bringing in another $11,269,651, putting its gross at $152,381,993.

Opening in a disappointing fourth place was the absolutely delightful adult fairy tale, Stardust, which made $9,169,779. The film, based on the bestselling novel by Neil Gaiman, is a wonderful adventure tale, full of magic, sly humor and real heart. Michelle Pfeiffer as the vain witch Lamia turns in an Oscar-worthy performance, as does Robert DeNiro as Captain Shakespeare. In the leads are Charlie Cox (the young hero on a quest) and Clare Danes (the falling star the hero is searching for), who both fit their roles perfectly. The chorus of the dead princes includes the hilarious Rupert Everett, and Peter O'Toole has a cameo as the head of one of the nastiest royal families around. The critics loved Stardust, but the marketing people had no clue how to sell such a cross-genre film. Ignore the ads, and just go see it.

Chris Noth Returns to Sex and the City

Christ Noth and Sarah Jessica Parker in Sex and the CityChris Noth has signed on to play Mr. Big in the film version of Sex and the City.
New Line's signed Chris Noth to reprise his "Mr. Big" role from "Sex and the City" in the feature version. Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon are already onboard to reprise their roles from the HBO series. Exec producer Michael Patrick King is set to write and direct. New Line hasn't released details about the exact storyline for the feature. Noth at present is a cast member of USA Network skein "Law & Order: Criminal Intent." The film will be produced by King with Parker, John Melfi and Darren Star, who initially created the series.
You've got the girls, you've got Mr. Big, so get cracking on a script, already! We're thinking weddings. Lots of weddings.

Burn Notice and Saving Grace Get Renewed

Photo from Burn NoticeTwo new cable series have already been renewed for a second season: Burn Notice and Saving Grace.
"Burn," starring Jeffrey Donovan, has been given a 13-episode order, while "Grace," toplined by Holly Hunter, has been picked up for 15 episodes. Both shows hail from Fox TV Studios. Following a solid premiere with 4 million total viewers (2.2 million in adults 25-52), "Burn" has showed growth, delivering its largest audience to date -- 4.4 million viewers (2.3 million in 25-54) -- last Thursday. The series, which stars Donovan as a spy who suddenly finds himself blacklisted, is executive produced by creator Matt Nix and Mikkel Bondesen.

In its debut, "Grace" drew 6.4 million total viewers, making it the most-watched basic cable series premiere of the year. The drama, which stars Hunter as an Oklahoma City police detective who gets helps from an unconventional angel (Leon Rippy), held on to 86% of its lead-in, hit TNT series "The Closer." To date, "Grace" has averaged 5.5 million.
We haven't yet tuned into to Saving Grace and losing one million viewers is not a good sign. Still, Holly Hunter is a great actress and clearly there is a market for the genre. Burn Notice is a great show; they need to up the budget so Michael can travel outside of Miami in future episodes. Keep the spy intrigue coming!

Jack Bauer Takes On Global Warming

Screenshot from 24Jack Bauer is set to tackle global warming on the hit show 24.
But the producers of 24, the American thriller, plan to make the show "carbon neutral" to "inspire its millions of viewers before it's too late". To promote the message, they are planning to tie global warming issues into the plots - which have included state-sanctioned torture and presidential assassination attempts - "when appropriate". Kiefer Sutherland, who plays the counter-terrorism agent Jack Bauer, said that global warming was "a crime for which we are all guilty". The actor added: "All of us at 24 understand the urgency of this problem and over the next year we will be implementing creative new ways to more efficiently produce our show and significantly reduce our carbon footprint. "If we don't do something about it now, this change in our climate will unleash irreversible damage."

The show will introduce a number of green initiatives, including the use of biodiesel fuels to power generators and hybrid vehicles in the production fleet. They will also email scripts to actors instead of sending them by "snail mail". A spokesman said 24 would incorporate "global warming and the importance of carbon emission reduction into storylines when appropriate".
That should be interesting. We would love nothing more than to watch the episode where Jack and company waterboard a bunch of corporate polluters.

    Bourne Ultimatum Crushes Competition

Screencap from The Bourne UltimatumMatt Damon shows he has what it takes to be a top action hero: The Bourne Ultimatum crushed its competition this past weekend, making an estimated $70,181,000 with a per-theater gross of $19,175. With breathtaking action, perfectly choreographed surveillance and fight scenes, it really is the best thriller of the year so far. In second place was The Simpsons Movie, which made an estimated $25,600,000. In third place was Underdog which debuted with an estimated take of $12,009,000.

Also opening this weekend were Hot Rod which made $5,015,000, Bratz, which made $4,310,000, and the Hector Lavoe biopic, El Cantante , which made $3,254,000 in a limited release with a very nice per-theater groos of $6,003. El Cantante , which stars Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez, has had mixed reviews. Still, some major critics loved the film and it will go into wider release soon.

Scarlett Johansson is No Jenna Jameson

    Photo of Scarlett Johansson

Scarlett Johansson, looking fabulous in the new Fall 2007 ads for Louis Vuitton, has denied reports that she signed to pay porn star Jenna Jameson in the film version of Jenna's book, Make Love Like a Porn Star.
"Scarlett has never seen a script nor been approached about this project," a rep for the actress told People. "She also has no interest in playing this role."

When People caught up with Jenna at Comic-Con over the weekend in San Diego, the adult film star said she was enamored with the 22-year-old Scarlett after seeing Lost In Translation. "I remember thinking to myself, this girl has such a sexuality without even really trying to be sexy," the 33-year-old Jenna said. "I was like, 'This girl could play me.' I love her. She's amazing. She's smart, she's funny ... She's stunning."

Jenna also told People the movie about her will be called Heartbreaker, based on her 2004 book, How to Make Love Like a Porn Star, which chronicled her rise to fame as a porn star.
    Wise move, Scarlett. Wise move.

    The Bionic Woman is Here

The trailer for the re-imagined Bionic Woman series is out and it looks really good. Watch for Katee Sackhoff (Starbuck from Battlestar Galactica) as the first bionic woman who went rogue. We have to wonder though, why didn't they cast Katee as the lead?
