Taye Diggs Makes it Work In Day Break

Photo of Taye Diggs and Victoria Pratt in Day BreakWe admit we were a bit skeptical of Taye Diggs' new show, Day Break. Diggs plays a cop named Hopper who keeps living the same horrible day over and over: it's a cross between Groundhog Day and Tru Calling, with an undercurrent of Lost thrown in for good measure. And it really works.

Hopper gets up one morning to find himself framed for the murder of an assitant district detective. A mysterious group of people kidnap him from his prison cell and tell him to confess to the murder of ADA Garza. They then show him a video of his girlfriend being brutally murdered and threaten his sister and his niece's lives. The day rewinds and starts all over again. Each time he tries to put the puzzle together, but he can only get so far in a day and so far, his changes aren't helping all that much. One twist on Groundhog Day and Tru Calling: he keeps all his injuries, along with his memories. So one day he wakes up with a bullet in his shoulder, much to his girlfriend's horror.

The cast is outstanding, especially Victoria Pratt (Mutant X) as his partner Andrea Battle. Andrea has some kind of problem with Internal Affairs, but she's good in a tight spot. We definitely want to see a lot more of Andrea. Moon Bloodgood (Eight Below) as his girlfriend Rita Shelten does a good job in a difficult role. Adam Baldwin (Firefly) as his ex-partner and Mitch Pileggi (X-Files and Stargate Atlantis) as one of the two feds on his tail ratchet up the suspense whenever they're on screen.

The show promises to reveal all in 11 weeks -- and that works for us. We'll be tuning in next week for sure.
