Chappie Tops Weekend Box Office, Unfinished Business Bombs

Posted on March 8, 2015

Chappie won the box office this weekend. It only made $13.3 million but this was enough to keep the science fiction film written and directed by Neill Blomkamp ahead of Focus. Terri Tatchell is also a screenwriter on Chappie with Blomkamp. Focus finished second and made another $10 million during its second weekend in theaters.

The U.S. box office was weak, but some films are finding success overseas. For example, Jupiter Ascending, starring Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis, has made over $100 million overseas according to The Hollywood Reporter. This includes a $23 million opening in China.

Focus was followed by The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, which made $8.6 million. Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel also had the best per theater average of the weekend at $5,467. It was followed by Kingsman: The Secret Service which made $8.3 million during its fourth weekend in theaters and is now just $2 million shy of the $100 million mark.

Kingsman was followed by Fifty Shades of Grey, McFarland, USA, The Lazarus Effect and The DUFF. Unfinished Business opened in tenth. The comedy starring Vince Vaugh, Sienna Miller and Dave Franco was a bomb. It made just $4.8 million and had a low per theater average of $1,728.
