Fifty Shades of Grey Dominates Weekend Box Office

Fifty Shades of Grey easily won the box office this weekend with a huge $81.7 million opening. This wasn't enough for the film to break the February box office opening record. Passion of the Christ retains the lead with its $83.8 million. However, Fifty Shades is expected to take Presidents' Day weekend record with its projected $90+ million four-day total.

Kingsman: The Secret Service also had a great opening weekend. It finished second and made $35.6 million. This makes the likelihood of a sequel a good possibility. The film stars Colin Firth as the head of a secret spy organization.

Kingsman was followed by The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water which added $30 million during its second weekend in theaters. The SpongeBob film has already made $93 million. It was followed by American Sniper, which added another $16 million during its eight weekend in theaters to push its total gross over the $300 million mark.

American Sniper was followed by Jupter Ascending, Seventh Son, Paddington and The Imitation Game. You can see the box office chart for the weekend here. It will be interesting to see how Fifty Shades after its big opening debut. The challengers it will face this coming weekend include Hot Tub Time Machine 2, The DUFF and McFarland, USA.
