First Teaser Trailer for The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

Posted on July 28, 2014

Warner Bros released the first teaser trailer for The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, which is the third and final film The Hobbit trilogy directed by Peter Jackson.

Jackson was originally going to make The Hobbit into two movies, but had enough footage to make it into three films. The Hobbit was a lighter book, a prequel for The Lord of the Rings. Jackson said that the tone of the films has been getting more serious in each film. The tone of this film will more closely match the first Lord of the Rings film.

The teaser's music is quite effective. The song is "Edge of Night," the haunting melody sung by Pippin Took (Billy Boyd) to Denthor (John Noble) in The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King.

The last film shows the Battle of the Five Armies, which was ignited when Thorin Oakenshield claimed the dwarves' homeland from Smaug the Dragon (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch). The dwarves, the men and the elves are at odds with one another until the orcs show up, led by the Necromancer (who later becomes known as Sauron). We see Galadriel (Cate Blanchett) tenderly kissing an unconscious Gandalf (Ian McKellan), we see armies massing for war and Thorin Oakenshield choosing war over peace in order to keep his greatest treasure. The film will be released on December 17, 2014. The teaser looks amazing. Take a look:
