Guardians of the Galaxy Returns to Top of Box Office

Posted on August 25, 2014

The Guardians of the Galaxy reclaimed the number one box office position this past weekend. It made $17.2 million and stayed just ahead of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which brought in $16.7 million. Vin Diesel is pictured above as Groot in a still from the film.

The Guardians of the Galaxy movie has now made $251 million in the U.S. It should have no problem passing Captain America: The Winter Soldier to become the top grossing domestic film of 2014. Captain America made $259.7 million in the U.S.

If I Stay, a drama starring Chloe Grace Moretz, opened in third place. It had a strong $15.7 million opening. The film, directed by R.J. Cutler, only had a reported budget of $11 million, so it has already surpassed that figure. Chloe continues to prove she is a box office draw.

If I Stay was followed by the comedy Let's Be Cops which made $10.8 million during its second weekend in theaters to bring its total gross to $45 million. The football movie When the Game Stands Tall, starring Jim Caviezel, opened in fifth and made $8.3 million. It is about a California high school football team that had an incredible 151 game win streak from 1992 to 2003.

The Sin City sequel, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, did not have a good opening. It made $6.3 million in nearly 3,000 theaters for a $2,183 per theater average. Deadline reports that film had a budget of $60 to $70 million so it won't be making that back in theaters. It may also mean there won't be another Sin City film.
