Hasbro Partners With Lionsgate for Monopoly Movie

Hasbro's plans to bring its Monopoly board game to the big screen are moving forward. Hasbro is partnering with Lionsgate for the motion picture. Lionsgate and Hasbro's Allspark Pictures will produce the film and Lionsgate will finance it.

Andrew Niccol has been hired to write the screenplay. Some of his past screenplays include The Truman Show, Gattaca, The Terminal and The Host. A director has not yet been assigned to the film.

Hasbro and Lionsgate say the film will be for all ages. The film will focus on a boy from Baltic Avenue who uses both Chance and Community in a quest to make his fortune. Hasbro says, "It's about making your own luck, what makes you truly rich and, of course, avoiding Jail time!" The boy's quest is described as a "fun, adventure-filled journey." The casting of the lead role of the boy will likely to be key to the potential success of the film.

Variety notes that Hasbro has been trying to launch a Monopoly film since 2009. With Lionsgate on board it looks like the project will pass GO this time around. Hasbro's Allspark Pictures division did find enough success with its 2014 Ouija horror film that it is working on a sequel, Ouija 2.
