Ian McKellan is Sherlock Holmes in First Mr. Holmes Trailer

Posted on May 6, 2015

Sherlock Holmes fans are in a sort of Golden Age of Sherlock. There is CBS' Elementary which stars Jonny Lee Miller as Sherlock and Lucy Liu as Dr. Watson. The BBC's Sherlock stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock and Martin Freeman as Dr. Watson.

Guy Ritchie's film series stars Robert Downey, Jr. as Holmes and Jude Law as Dr. Watson. Now we will get to see Ian McKellan's interpretation of the consulting detective made famous in the books by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. In 1947, an elderly Sherlock Holmes is winding down his life. He raises bees and is kept company by his housekeeper ( Laura Linney) and her son Roger (Milo Parker). He becomes close to the boy, who is an apt pupil. At 93, Holmes' memory is not what it was and he is grappling with that, as well as other aging issues.

Holmes decides to take on one last case. During this trailer we see Holmes debunking many of the myths that his imaginative friend Dr. Watson (Colin Starkey) created. Holmes says he never wore a deerstalker hat, he prefers a top hat. He doesn't smoke a meerschaum pipe, he prefers cigars. He is a celebrity, but wishes he were not.

The film was directed by Bill Condon and is based on Mitch Cullen's 2005 novel, A Simple Trick of the Mind. We love Sherlock Holmes and we love Ian McKellan, so we're excited to see what McKellan does with the role. Take a look:
