Networks Greenlight SF and Fantasy Shows

Sci Fi reports on the fantasy and SF shows which have been greenlighted by the major networks.
David E. Kelley is writing and executive-producing Mars for ABC, about a detective who goes back in time to the 1970s. The Bionic Woman comes from David Eick (executive producer of SCI FI Channel's Battlestar Galactica), a "re-imagination" of the classic 1970s SF show that will focus on a woman's place in today's world.

Other pilot pickups include Fox's New Amsterdam, which centers on a cop who is hundreds of years old, while CBS' Twilight deals with a private eye who is a vampire. A list of other SF pilot pickups, by network, follows.

ABC: Eli Stone, about an attorney (Jonny Lee Miller) who begins to have larger-than-life visions; Mr. & Mrs. Smith, based on the hit feature film, about a married couple who are spies; Pushing Daisies, a detective show/romance/fairy tale about a guy who can touch the dead and bring them back to life.

CBS: Babylon Fields, a sardonic, apocalyptic comedic drama in which the dead are resurrected and try to resume their former lives; Demons, about an ex-Jesuit priest/psychologist who fights demons.

NBC: Journeyman, an epic fantasy about a man who travels back in time to fix the lives of people in trouble.

Fox: Sarah Connor Chronicles, based on the characters from the Terminator film franchise, about Connor (Lena Headey) and her son, John (Thomas Dekker), in present-day Los Angeles as they fight attackers from the future; Them, also from Eick, about an extraterrestrial sleeper cell that has infiltrated the human race.

The CW: Reaper, about a 21-year-old slacker who becomes the devil's bounty hunter.
We wonder who will be the next Bionic Woman? We hear that Jordana Brewster has been cast in the Angelina Jolie role in the TV version of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, but there's no word on who the male lead will be. And speaking of Angelina Jolie, Jonny Lee Miller, Angelina's ex-husband, has an interesting role in Eli Stone as an attorney who starts having visions and who may be a prophet. We like Jonny Lee Miller but we're not sure about this one: prophets and attorneys? What was the pitch here? "It's Boston Legal meets Left Behind meets Jericho? We'll tune in for the pilot though.

    Tim Kring Dishes on Heroes

Cover of TV GuideCreator Tim Kring gives an exclusive, spoiler-filled interview in the current (January 29th) Issue of TV Guide Magazine. Don't read any further if you don't want to know!

Claire finds her birth parents. Peter vanishes. Hiro's father shows up and so does a startling new Israeli hero with high tech capabilities. But that's not the biggest news in store for fans of Heroes as it continues its first season. Featuring four collectible Heroes covers, the January 29 issue of TV Guide magazine (on newsstands January 25) reveals that one series' regular is headed for hero heaven.

"Some people will be upset [when they learn who dies], sure," says Heroes creator and executive producer Tim Kring. "During February sweeps we are going to kill off one of our regulars, someone who has been with the show from the very beginning." Asked if that "regular" is one of the actual heroes, Kring responds, "You know what? I personally never use the term 'hero' because I happen to know that, ultimately, some of the seemingly heroic characters will not be heroic."

Still he hints that we may not be seeing the last of whomever it is that is being knocked off. "But with the ability to bend time and change things, not all of those who are killed are making their last appearance on the show-and we actually do have plans for the character who’s dying."

Kring also confirms that Claire will find her biological mom - played by Nip/Tuck's Jessalyn Gilsig - in the January 29 episode. "Claire sets out to locate her birth mother and finds her living in a trailer park in an old Airstream. That'll be a shock but the identity of Claire's father will be a bigger shock," he says. He goes on to hint that the revelation of Claire's biological father just might be someone fans are already familiar with. "I'll say no more about that except that the reveal will be a lot of fun for the audience... Claire has to go on the road to find him. Once she meets her true parents, it will become even more important for her to find other people like her."

Continuing with the "Meet the Parents" theme, Kring says that Hiro's father – played by George Takei - will also pop up on January 29. "It's going to be blow-your-mind cool," he says. "The character will provide a gateway into a whole world back in Japan that we will explore in Season 2-a story about Hiro's family and his past."

As for Hiro regaining control of his powers, Kring says, "He'll be a little handicapped for a while. Hiro can't be so powerful that he becomes a crutch for bad writing. That's why we had him fail to save the waitress. We can't have him go back in time and fix everything."

What about the two series regulars - Simone and Mohinder - who don't seem to possess a secret power? Kring says of both, "[There are] none yet and none planned...except [in the case of Simone] maybe the power of love. We want the audience to feel that the spark between Simone and Isaac might reignite. It was always intended to be a complicated triangle between those tow and Peter."

As for Peter, Kring says, "He's with our new invisible man, Claude, and no one will be able to find him for several episodes. Claude who has had his powers longer than anyone we've seen thus far, is a window into the truth about what's really going on."

Heroes airs tonight at 9:00 p.m. Eastern/8:00 p.m. Central on NBC.

    Bruce Willis Injured on Set

Photo of Bruce Willis Bruce Willis was injured on the set of his new movie, Live Free Or Die Hard .
The actor was kicked in the forehead during a fight scene in his new Die Hard movie on Wednesday, and was briefly hospitalised. His on-set accident came hours before Nicole Kidman was left shaken up when she was involved in a car crash on the Downtown Los Angeles set of her new zombie film The Invasion.

Like Kidman, Willis was checked over by a doctor, and then discharged. According to insiders, he was left with a gash above his right eye.
Willis was reportedly back on the set for filming the next day. The film stars Willis as officer John McClane, who attempts to stop a techno-terrorist from shutting down the nation's computer systems on the Fourth of July. The story takes place around Washington, D.C., and is being directed by Underworld: Evolution filmmaker Len Wiseman. Live Free Or Die Hard also stars Timothy Olyphant, Maggie Q and Kevin Smith. It is set for a June 29, 2007 release. You can see a trailer of Live Free or Die Hard here.

Oscar Nominations Full of Snubs and Slights

The nominations for the 79th Annual Academy Awards were announced this week and -- as usual -- there are some obvious snubs and slights. Here are some highlights of the nominees in major categories:

    Best Picture:
  • Babel
  • The Departed
  • Letters From Iwo Jima
  • Little Miss Sunshine
  • The Queen

    Actor:
  • Leonardo DiCaprio, Blood Diamond
  • Ryan Gosling, Half Nelson
  • Peter O'Toole, Venus
  • Will Smith, The Pursuit of Happyness
  • Forest Whitaker, The Last King of Scotland

    Actress:
  • Penelope Cruz, Volver
  • Judi Dench, Notes on a Scandal
  • Helen Mirren, The Queen
  • Meryl Streep, The Devil Wears Prada
  • Kate Winslet, Little Children

    Supporting Actor:
  • Alan Arkin, Little Miss Sunshine
  • Jackie Earle Haley, Little Children
  • Djimon Hounsou, Blood Diamond
  • Eddie Murphy, Dreamgirls
  • Mark Wahlberg, The Departed

    Supporting Actress:
  • Adriana Barraza, Babel
  • Cate Blanchett, Notes on a Scandal
  • Abigail Breslin, Little Miss Sunshine
  • Jennifer Hudson, Dreamgirls
  • Rinko Kikuchi, Babel

    Director:
  • Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, Babel
  • Martin Scorsese, The Departed
  • Clint Eastwood, Letters From Iwo Jima
  • Stephen Frears, The Queen
  • Paul Greengrass, United 93

Dreamgirls had eight nominations but did not get a Best Picture nomination -- which it did not deserve. In fact, it didn't deserve eight nominations because it's no Chicago. Jennifer Hudson and Eddie Murphy are the standouts from that film and rightly deserved to be noticed, however.

In the best actor category, Ed Norton for The Illusionist and Matt Damon for The Good Shepherd were shocking oversights. Brad Pitt was overlooked for Babel, but that's not surprising -- or upsetting, for that matter. The Queen is overhyped -- Kirsten Dunst in Marie Antoinette was a more worthy choice here. We can only hope that Martin Scorcese wins for Best Director for The Departed, because he really deserves it. Akeelah and the Bee was overlooked entirely, which is a shame. But of all the slights, we think Thank You For Smoking was the biggest oversight. Aaron Eckhart deserves a Best Actor nod for his brilliant portrayal of a cynical tobacco lobbyist.

You can see the full list of Oscar nominees in all categories here. The 2007 Oscars airs Sunday, February 25, 8:00 p.m. Eastern/5:00 p.m. Pacific on ABC.

Lost Producers Say Show Will Have Definitive Ending Date

The producers of Lost have stated that there will be an end to Lost, with a nice, satisfying ending.
There’s no sense the finale is coming anytime soon. But knowing they have a deadline will help writers of the convoluted drama lay out how they want the story to end, producers said Sunday in a meeting with TV critics here. "Once we figure out when that will be, a lot of the questions will go away," said Carlton Cuse, an executive producer. Lost is in its third season. The producers, citing Fox's The X-Files, said they didn’t want to wear out their welcome. "That was a great show that probably ran two seasons too long," Cuse said. "That is a cautionary tale for us."

    *****

One prominent critic — ABC Entertainment President Stephen McPherson — said he thought the first six episodes this season concentrated too heavily on the stories of Jack, Kate and Sawyer at the expense of other members of the large cast. The producers said that will be rectified right away for the season's second half as Lost goes back to the beach.

    *****

Lost, which is shifting back an hour to 10 p.m. Eastern time, Wednesdays, on ABC's schedule, has seen a 14 percent drop in its audience this year, according to Nielsen Media Research. Producers contend the numbers are deceptive because of a comparison with the second season, when Lost was a cultural sensation. The producers concede that it's a demanding story for viewers to keep up with, and not one that people can join in the middle.

"We want them back," executive producer Damon Lindelof said of the lost fans. We really believe in the show and the audience we're getting. But if we write towards getting them back, we may alienate the audience that we already have."
Lost returns on Wednesday, February 7, 2007 in a new time slot: 10:00 p.m. Eastern/9:00 p.m. Central time. We're ready for the return to the beach. And some answers. Definitely some answers.

    NBC Plans Bionic Woman Remake

The Bionic WomanCNN reports that NBC has greenlighted a remake of The Bionic Woman.
The pilot pickup season began in earnest Tuesday, with NBC greenlighting three one-hour projects, including a new take on "The Bionic Woman."

The original series, a spin-off from "The Six Million Dollar Man," starred Lindsay Wagner as a woman whose body is mechanically enhanced to save her life. It ran on ABC and then NBC for three seasons in the mid-1970s. NBC's order is contingent on casting.
Casting has not been finished so we have no idea who will be reprising Linsday Wagner's role. You can see a video of the beginning of the 1970's show here (via The Raw Feed). Cinema Blend says David Eick (Battlestar Gallactica) and Laeta Kalogridis (The Dive) will executive produce and write the series.

    The Dresden Files Entertains

Still from The Dresden FilesThe Dresden Files premiered last night and is off to a great start. Harry Dresden is the only wizard in the Chicago phone book and he solves cases using magic. He also consults for the Chicago police department and his long-suffering friend Detective Karin Murphy. The bestselling series, written by Jim Butcher, is funny, witty and full of action. The televsion show -- for those who haven't read the books -- is a cross between The X-Files, House and Angel, with a touch of Charmed.

The entire show is dependent on the lead, in this case played by Paul Blackthorne. Blackthorne does a nice job of underplaying his role as Harry. Harry's interactions with Terrence Mann as the ethereal Bob are quite entertaining. In the books Bob is a spirit trapped in a skull, but in TV-land he has a form that viewers can see. In fact, the whole Bob thing really worked for us. Valerie Cruz as Lt. Murphy is a bit of a cipher, and we're not sure she has much chemistry with Blackthorne, but it's still early going. The script, special effects and acting were all good. But it's Blackthorne that makes this show shine. We'll be tuning in next week for sure.

Hayden Panettiere Feels Like Kenny on South Park

Photo of Hayden Panettiere in Heroes Heroes creator Tim Kring revealed a few tidbits about the second half of the season of the show we just love. Watch with Kristin liveblogged the NBC dog and pony show for reporters:
Death seems to be the topic of the day here. A reporter just asked how the cast feels about the fact that people will die on this show. "I feel like Kenny in South Park!" Hayden cracked, referring to getting killed in almost every episode. Milo was more serious: "You have to pay attention to the work on the page and make it as good as possible because it could be your last." Gulp.

Sweet little Micah on his crazy parents: "I think he knows something's funky going on with his mom. And he's pretty scared of her now. But like any kid he wants his parents together." Adds Daddy Dearest (D.L.): "We're like Kramer vs. Kramer on crack." Kring: "The characters who have been disconnected from Sylar will be connected in coming episodes. We're really ratcheting it up and bringing those connections together in the next few episodes."

5:45 p.m.: Bonus! There will be 23 eps instead of usual 22. Kring is planning a "really fun, exciting cliffhanger" for the season finale. Of course.
Heroes will be up against Fox's hit show 24, but Tim Kring says that there is room for both shows. Do the two shows have an overlapping audience at all? Hard to say. And if you have Tivo, it doesn't matter a bit. Heroes returns on Monday, January 22nd at 9 p.m. Eastern/8:00 p.m. Central time. We can't wait!

Pirates of the Caribbean 3 Publicity Pics

Pirates Publicity PhotosAin't it Cool News has their hands on some publicity pictures for the third Disney pirates film: Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. The artwork has a ghostly look to it.
These images pretty much speak for themselves. Disney is gearing up its publicity behemoth for Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End & I'm told these represent some permutation of theatrical display fodder (posters, banners, etc.)

So far, I'm diggin' the look and style of the campaign. Please Note: there's a chance this work may not be final. If true, this is still an interesting glimpse into the prmotional development process.
We like the addition of a samurai. The early expectation is that Pirates 3 will be another blockbuster for Disney.

We're very glad that Meryl Streep won for her fabulous turn in The Devil Wears Prada, America Ferrera won for Ugly Betty and that Hugh Laurie won for House, which is a great show we never miss. The Babel win was a surprise, really. And so many shows were overlooked this year that it gave the proceedings an air of something being missing. And we think that Dreamgirls is just overrated.

    James Cameron to Direct Avatar

James Cameron has finally announced that his next feature film project will be Avatar, which Newsweek describes as "a $195 million action-adventure film set on a distant planet, shot in digital 3-D, using a camera he developed." Cameron hasn't made a movie in ten years, since his worldwide hit Titanic won 11 Oscars and grossed $1.8 billion.
Newsweek: Why has it taken so long for you to direct another feature film?

James Cameron: Well, there's not a quick answer. I've done 70 ocean expeditions in the last 10 years, and I love that world. I've been living out a kind of childhood dream of doing real exploration. But I always knew that I would come back to feature filmmaking. We're announcing "Avatar" right now, but I've been working on it for a year and half.

A year and a half?! I can't believe you kept that quiet.

[Laughs] I can't either. We've got, like, a hundred people working it full time. But they're pretty dedicated. They believe in this thing. It's like a cult. [Laughs] And they were told in no uncertain terms to keep their mouths shut.

    *****

Avatar won't be released until summer 2009. That's a huge time commitment.

It will be four years total for me, yeah. But I've wanted to make this movie from the time I wrote the treatment 11 years ago. I was just biding my time for when it was going to be technically possible. I'm so invested in the 3-D, and I love the challenge of creating an alien culture. We're creating a world from scratch, so it's really fun.
Four more years? We're sure we'll see Avatar when it comes out, but we really wish he'd speed things up.

iTunes and Sundance Team Up For $1.99 Downloads

iTunes and Sundance have inked a deal whereby viewers can download from iTunes many of the 71 live-action and animated shorts movies being shown at the Sundance Film Festival. Each download will cost $1.99.
Sundance has always streamed a selection of shorts on its own site, and will do so again this year. But Sundance director of programming John Cooper said the new deal could give filmmakers greater reach and revenue, while also branding the festival on new platforms. Goal, Cooper said, is to export the fest beyond the multitudes who already descend on Park City. "In a way, we're not that interested in talking to the people who are at the festival because we're already at a max with them. We want to talk to people who don't come to the festival."

Podcasts of panels and other events will be made available for free on iTunes. Essentially, the deal looks to turn a film's festival screening from a one-off event at a particular time and place into a product that can be consumed by anyone throughout the year. Promos for the shorts, which will become available midway through the fest on Jan. 22, also will run on the Sundance Channel. But whether iTunes can achieve success with unknown content remains an open question; while shows like "Lost" and "CSI" have been sources of revenue and brand extensions, there's little track record for lesser-known video properties.

Nonexclusive deal allows filmmakers to sell shorts in other venues as well. Revenue will be split between the filmmakers and Sundance, with filmmakers taking more than half the total on each pic. Sundance ultimately would like to sell all the shorts, but must contend with rights issues for some of the films.

Pact comes as Sundance makes a larger push for shorts. In addition to its festival program, this year it's commissioning new shorts for mobile phones from the likes of "Little Miss Sunshine" co-directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris. Fest founder Robert Redford has said he wants Sundance to do for shorts in 2007 what it has done for indie features over the past two decades.
We think this is very, very cool. It will really help fledgling filmmakers get their work in front of the public and will give movie buffs access to Sundace content, even if they can't make the trip to Park City, Utah this January 19-29st.

    Jack's Future On Lost

    [Note: many Lost spoilers ahead]

It appears that Matthew Fox is a big liar: Kristin of E!'s Watch With Kristin reveals that Jack is not going to be killed off anytime soon -- despite the fact that Fox told E! that his character was killed off. He was just messing with our heads. [many spoilers ahead].
I just received definitive word that Matthew Fox is not being killed off of Lost, despite rampant rumors that his days on the show were numbered. Rumors that were perpetuated by Matthew himself, when he told our E! crew flat out that he was "not on the show anymore. They killed me off." Little bugger. I have half a mind to continue to watch and support your show. You just watch me. I will.

I know how rarely we get any definitive answers on this show that we all obsess over and adore (and lose our sanity for), so I wanted to give you that very straight piece of information, that Matthew Fox will be staying, and subsequently, the producers have not lost their minds. Now that we know it isn't Foxy, and assuming the rumors of an upcoming death are true, the question remains: Who'll be the next to go?

It seems as though it might possibly be the man known as the Brazilian Russell Crowe, Rodrigo Santoro, who, yes, has been barely more than a meat sock thus far (that's a background character, okay? Get your minds out of the gutter, people!). Sources tell me we will be seeing more of his character, along with Kiele Sanchez, however, the producers also have decided to shift the focus back to the main Losties, including the ones we didn't see much of in the first six episodes, like Jin, Charlie, Claire, etc.

Lucky for you (and unlucky for producers), I just so happen to have a special correspondent for all things Brazilian, Secret Agent J-Wow, whose native tongue is Portuguese. Rodrigo just gave an interview with the Brazilian version of Rolling Stone magazine, which you can read about here—if you speak Portuguese.

According to J-Wow, this is what Rodrigo says in the article: "He said he is shooting his last scenes this month and then he is going to 'disappear' from the series. He said the writers are writing an episode focusing on him, and they'll problably kill him off. Rodrigo said he would like to participate more in Lost, as long as the writers have an incredible story to have him back in the future. He said he's going to focus on his movie career in Brazil. Can't wait to marry you. Love, J-Wow."
We'd be mad at Matthew Fox for being so naughty, but we're so happy they're not killing off Jack that we're not really mad at all. And since Rodrigo Santoro has had like three lines on the show so far, it's hard to get all worked up about his possible demise.

    Japan Loves Miss Potter

Photo of Renee Zellweger and Ewan McGregor in Miss PotterRenee Zellweger is currently starring in Miss Potter, which tells the life story of bestselling children's author Beatrix Potter. Everyone loves Beatrix Potter books - but did you know that the Japanese are simply mad for all things Potter?
Perhaps it should be no surprise that the country that reveres all things Hello Kitty should also have a soft spot for Beatrix Potter. Still, to anyone whose interest in Peter Rabbit, Mrs Tiggywinkle and Jemima Puddle-Duck ended with infants school, Japan's enduring fascination is an unusual one. Beatrix Potter isn’t just big there: she is a national obsession. We may use her illustrations to decorate Wedgwood china, but they have them everywhere from ATM cash machines to business stationery and mayonnaise jars.

Britain's own Potter industry is set to receive a boost with the release of Christopher Noonan's film, but even then, it is unlikely to approach Asian levels of fandom. Among the Potter-related attractions in Tokyo are a chain of Peter Rabbit juice bars and, in a children’s zoo, a perfect recreation of her Lake District farmhouse, Hill Top. The Tale of Peter Rabbit, published in Japan in 1971, was one of the first English books to become available in translation there. It was on the national curriculum for years, and is still used as a teaching aid. You can only surmise that tourists arriving at Heathrow must feel a little cheated that we are not all scurrying around in blue jackets and bonnets, baking pies in patty-pans.

So what is it that appeals to the Japanese? Richard Foster, general manager of The World of Beatrix Potter at Bowness on Windermere, and chairman of the English Lake District Japan Forum, believes that it is a picture of bygone Britain, embodied in her comforting tales of helpful mice and sagacious owls. "Peter Rabbit is seen as a quintessential British character," he says. "He represents a gentle, nostalgic view of this country that continues to attract tourists."

David Buckley, president of Copyrights Asia Ltd, the company that handles all Japanese copyrights for Beatrix Potter, agrees. "Peter Rabbit is seen as trustworthy, stable and unthreatening," he says. "There is a natural affinity between the Japanese and Beatrix Potter. Her books represent a wholesome Englishness that is highly prized."

    *****

Readers abroad, though, take a far more literal approach, particularly in Japan, the biggest market for Beatrix Potter in the world. According to Visit Britain, the North West is the second most popular destination for Japanese tourists after London, while the National Trust estimates that Hill Top alone attracts nearly 20,000 visitors from Japan every summer - almost a third of the total.
Who knew that Peter Rabbit was such a hit in Japan? The absolutely charming Miss Potter is in theaters nationwide.

Night at the Museum Tops Box Office Again

Photo from Night at the MuseumBen Stiller's Night at the Museum topped the box office for the third week in a row, making an estimated $24,000,000. That brings the film's total receipts to date to $164,097,000. It's a hilarious, family-friendly movie that's really worth seeing. Owen Wilson as the cowboy Jedediah and Robin Williams as Teddy Roosevelt really shine in the film. Be sure to stay through the credits and watch Dick Van Dyke dance: he's absolutely amazing at 81.

In second place is Will Smith's The Pursuit of Happyness, which made another $13,000,000, bringing its total to $124,159,000. In third place is the Clive Owen SF film, Children of Men which made an estimated $10,295,000. Based loosely on the book by P.D James, it's getting excellent reviews and we can't wait to see it.

In fourth place is Hilary Swank's Freedom Writers, an inspiring true story about a teacher in Long Beach, California, which made an estimated $9,705,000. Opening this weekend was Happily N'Ever After, an animated fairy tale starring the voices of Sarah Michelle Gellar and Sigourney Weaver, which made an estimated $6,800,000 and the comedy Code Name: The Cleaner, starring Cedric the Entertainer, which made an estimated $4,625,000.

Cube Fabulous: Improving Cubes and Changing Lives

Cube FabulousIn Cube Fabulous, on online reality tv show, upbeat and intentionally cheesy cube fabricators Jeff and Megan travel to people's offices to help them improves their dull cubes. They claim that they are changing lives "one cubicle at a time." ClickZ reports that the online cube makeover show is hit.
As its second season comes to a close, online reality show Cube Fabulous is claiming success, having grown its audience to 4.5 million unique visitors and signed several big name sponsors.

The show consists of seven-minute episodes, broadcast exclusively online, where disgruntled cube dwellers have their desks upgraded by a team of designers. Cubes have been endowed with themes like punk rock and ski chalet; one was even transformed into a human-sized acquarium.

"There's a real opportunity in this industry to create something that never existed before," said Matt Wasserlauf, CEO of Broadband Enterprises, which produces Cube Fabulous. "We're going to drive time spent metrics while people are watching video; we are going to allow them to watch unique programming."

Originally targeted to the 18- to 24-year-old market, Cube Fbulous is now attempting to reach an older audience with new episodes. Broadband Enterprises said the show has logged 100 million streams, with 75 to 100 million ad impressions from 4.5 million unique viewers. Total ad billings are $2.1 million.
There are about a dozen episodes of Cube Fabulous online and new episodes will appear in February. You can submit your own cube profile here if you want a shot at appearing on an episode of the show and a shot at having the cube fabricators come to your office and pimp your cube.

    The O.C. Is Cancelled

Photo of the cast of the show The O.C.The hit show The O.C. has been cancelled by Fox.
The network said Wednesday the teen soap will end its four-season run next month. New episodes will air in the show's ultra-competitive 9-10 p.m. slot every Thursday through the series finale February 22. So far this season, the show is averaging about 4.1 million total viewers, less than half of what it garnered during its debut season, according to Nielsen Media Research. Last season it averaged 5.7 million.

"The O.C." got off to a promising start in August 2003, garnering plenty of buzz with its attractive cast. But at the start of Season 2, Fox moved the show to Thursday nights, where it faced an uphill battle and never recovered. Before this season began, Fox said it was cutting its order of episodes.

The show, which follows a group of friends and families whose lives were changed by the arrival of an outsider (Benjamin McKenzie) to the chic California community of Newport Beach, recently saw some cast changes. Mischa Barton 's character was killed off at the end of last season, and Autumn Reeser and Willa Holland came on board as regulars.

    *****

"This feels like the best time to bring the show to its close," said creator/executive producer Josh Schwartz. "Thanks to the hard work of our cast, crew and writers, we have enjoyed our best season yet, and what better time to go out than creatively on top."
Once Seth didn't get into Brown and Ryan turned into a cage fighter, the show totally jumped the shark. Killing of the annoying Marissa was a high note, but honestly, the show is so over. The CW network has said it might pick up the show...yawn.

    Waiting For Our Heroes

Photo of the cast of HeroesWe can't wait for the hiatus to end and for Heroes to return on January 21, 2007 (on NBC at 10 pm Eastern time). In the meantime, creator Tim Kring has been talking about the series. Apparently, he was shocked at how many families with small children are watching the show, which has quite a bit of violence in it. So he's going to make the show a bit more family-friendly.
In addition to a seven-week hiatus, Heroes creator Tim Kring is faced with the challenge of making the show more family-friendly, reports Broadcastingcable.com. Kring recently sat on a panel at a Family Friendly Programming Forum in Beverly Hills where it became apparent that the show may be too violent for the young-uns' who are watching.

"We were trying to get a hip audience of twentysomethings and college kids, but I have been taken by surprise by how many families watch the show," Kring acknowledged. "I feel like we have to back off some of the very graphic stuff," said Kring. "The genre calls for a certain amount of violence. The cheerleader sticking her hand in a garbage disposal still gets an 'Ooh!' in a good way."
Just Jared reports on a new character that's coming to the series: an invisible man.
Claude, an invisible man played by British actor Christopher Eccleston (Doctor Who), appears in this episode as well. Heroes creator Tim Kring explains: "He's been living with his invisibility for many years and has come to grips with it, so he'll give us a different view into this hero world. He's big, imposing and charismatic, and will become a mentor to Peter — albeit a tough, reluctant and stern one. He'll help Peter learn to use and control his powers."
Christopher Eccleston will be amazing -- we are so ready for this hiatus to end. Although, we have to say that we are still furious over the abrupt cancellation of Day Break starring Taye Diggs. Now we will never know why Detective Hopper's day kept restarting. And we're not happy about that.
