Johnny Depp is Gangster Whitey Bulger in First Black Mass Trailer

Johnny Depp is absolutely mesmerizing in the first trailer for Black Mass. Depp plays Whitey Bulger, one of the U.S.' most infamous gangsters. Bulger cut a deal with the FBI to inform on a rival gang in order to protect his empire.

This went on for years, but ended with him going into hiding and being on the FBI's Most Wanted List. He was second on the list -- just after Osama bin Laden. In this scene Bulger is at dinner and asks his host for the recipe for the steak which he says is delicious. The host says it's a family secret, but eventually gives up the recipe to Bulger. Then things get really scary.

This looks like Depp's comeback vehicle. His last few films have not been hits and his affair and then marriage to Amber Heard didn't do his Q rating any favors. Fans are not happy. But Depp is quite chilling in this role. He's wearing blue contact lenses and sports a severely receding hairline -- he's unrecognizable and that works to his advantage. He becomes Whitey Bulger and he is amazing in this clip.

The supporting cast is all star. Benedict Cumberbatch, Dakota Johnson, Joel Edgerton, Kevin Bacon, Adam Scott, Jesse Plemons, and Peter Sarsgaard are all in the film. Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart) directed the film which hits theaters on September 18, 2015. Take a look:
