Ron Moore Talks Battlestar Galactica Season 3 Finale

Photo of Starbuck in Crossroads Part 2, Season 3 Finale Battlestar Galactica producer Ron Moore explains what exactly was happening in the season finale. (Major Spoilers Ahead).

Apparently, some fans weren't sure whether Col. Tigh, Chief Tyrol, Anders and presidential aid Tori really are Cylons. Well, they are. They are four of the final five. Presidential aide Tori is one really boring character, so her selection as a Cylon was a big surprise. But we suppose that her proximity to President Rosslyn makes her useful. And was that really Starbuck that showed up saying she knew the way to Earth? The last scene was of North America, like she and Lee just got there via wormhole. It's pretty convenient that Kara showed up right when the Cylon fleet showed up.
Rob: Why did music cause these newly-revealed Cylons to discover they were indeed Cylons. Sharon didn't hear music when she figured it out in season one.

Ron Moore: It's more that they arrived at a certain point in space and they were made aware of who they are. The music manifests a dawning awareness. These are four of the final five, which puts them in a separate category from everybody else. There are reasons for that I can't really get into. We'll be playing out those plot lines for quite a while.

*****

R: So Tigh and the others were put into the Colonial fleet as adults?

RM: I don't know if it's that simple. I think it's something that goes back pretty far. A lot of the specifics of the back story of how this came about will reveal itself over the course of the next season. Those four are trying to figure out their own story. They don't really understand what this all means. Tigh's been in two wars and wondering, how could this be? A part of next season's storylines will uncover how they came to be who they are and the specifics of that.

R: Why did Roslin have a mental connection to Sharon and Six and not the other Cylons on board?

RM: They are fundamentally different Cylons.

R: A friend of mine wonders about why even most of the Cylons don't know the identities of the final five. She thinks it may have something to do with the humans who created the Cylons or perhaps even the God the Cylons worship.

RM: Those are pretty good possibilities.

R: When did you decide to make these four characters Cylons and how much did you have to go back and check to make sure that fit with things we already knew about these four characters?

RM: It was something I came up with this season as I worked toward the finale. The conceptual framework in which these guys are Cylons, it all sort of works once we laid down their individual back stories.

R: Are these four all full Cylons?

RM: Yes, but they are different fundamentally.

R: Will we meet the final fifth Cylon next season?

RM: I think so.

R: When the Cylon D'Anna (Lucy Lawless) glimpsed the face of one of the final five, she said, "I'm sorry." Since D'Anna tortured Tigh, can we presume she saw his face?

RM: We're developing a storyline dealing with D'Anna and what she saw and who she was talking to. We haven't talked to [Lucy Lawless] about it and she was just cast in a pilot, which makes it tricky. But it's something we would like to look at.

R: So did Apollo really see Starbuck or was he hallucinating?

RM: This, too, is a fine question. It's exactly the kind of thing I want people to chew over the next few months.

R:Is Katee Sackhoff, who plays Starbuck, signed for next season?

RM: Yes.
Well, that cleared up a few things. But not everything. What a nightmare for Tigh to end up being a Cylon after fighting them in two wars, being tortured by them and killing his wife because she betrayed the humans to them. We just don't know about having four Cylons inside Galactica. Things look pretty grim for the human race. And, if Starbuck leads the fleet to Earth, the Cylon fleet will be right behind. Which means they can wipe out Earth quite easily, since Earth has no FTL drive or much space travel ability at all -- assuming that the show portrays Earth as it is in real life. Huge Bummer.

Still, if the final five Cylons are fundamentally different from the others -- like perhaps they are unique and have no copies -- maybe they will side with the humans, like Boomer did. After all, they just found out they are Cylons; their entire personalities have been human to date. Let's hope so, or it's buh-bye to the entire human race very soon.

Tom Cruise, the Nazis and the Plot to Assassinate Hitler

The family of a World War II German office who tried to assassinate Adolf Hitler is very unhappy about the casting of Tom Cruise in a film about the plot. Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg was a Wehrmacht colonel who tried to assassinate Hitler, but the plot failed. He was later exectued, but is stil considered a hero for trying to stop the dictator. His descendants are worried that Cruise will use the story to spread propaganda about his Scientology beliefs.
Born into an aristocratic Bavarian family, Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg was the Wehrmacht colonel behind the July 20 plot to kill the Führer in 1944. The German officer placed a bomb in a suitcase under a table at a meeting Hitler was attending. The bomb detonated but was not strong enough to kill the German leader, although four members of his inner circle died in the blast. Von Stauffenberg was subsequently caught and executed.

The movie adaptation is to be produced at United Artists, the Hollywood studio Cruise is heading with his business partner Paula Wagner. Entitled Valkyrie - the codename for the operation, named after the Richard Wagner opera - the film is to be directed by Bryan Singer. The script was co-written by Christopher McQuarrie, who penned the Singer-directed thriller The Usual Suspects. The role of Hitler has yet to be cast, reports Focus, adding that the film is to be shot in Berlin and in eastern Europe.

But Von Stauffenberg's descendants are concerned at the plans. "I have nothing against him [Cruise] and can even separate his work from his beliefs in Scientology," Count Caspar Schenk von Stauffenberg, the officer's grandson told the Scotsman, which notes that the family is staunchly Catholic. "But I and other family members are worried that the picture will be financed by the sect and be used to get across its propaganda," he added. "Unfortunately the family Stauffenberg can do nothing about this. My grandfather is a figure from history."
Count von Stauffenberg may not be far off in his predictions. According to recent report in Speigel magazine, the Church of Scientology has launched a huge campaign to convert lots of Germans to the cause. It has built a huge headquarters in Berlin, which is really freaking out the German government which considers Scientology an anti-Democratic cult.

Paulina is the First Casualty of Dancing With the Stars

Photo of Paulina PorizkovaAlas, lovely supermodel Paulina Porizkova was the first contestant to be booted off this season's Dancing With the Stars.
The former supermodel showed off an elegant foxtrot with partner Alec Mazo on the March 19 debut of the ballroom dance competition ("You look like you have breakfast, lunch and dinner at Tiffanys," gushed judge Bruno Tonioli). But her moves during the traditionally sensual mambo Monday night were "stiff and starchy," according to judge Len Goodman.

Despite harsh critiques from the judges' table, "it's been a great experience," Porizkova, 41, told PEOPLE after Tuesday's show. "I made tons of new friends! We've had so much fun, just laughing endlessly."

*****

After her first performance, "my husband [rocker Ric Ocasek] was like 'You're going to win!' I was like, 'No honey, I'm not.' So I proved him wrong!" she said with a satisfied laugh.
She is still married to Ric Ocasek from The Cars? That's the most amazing thing we've heard all day.

Heather Mills Stuns Dance Judges With Backflip

Dancing With the Stars continues to entertain. Watch Heather Mills -- who has only one leg -- do the mamba and a back walkover. She certainly impressed the judges. We were astounded, we must admit. Her performance netted her a score of 24 out of 30, putting her into 5th place.

Judge Bruno Tonioli said: "Beyond any expectation! You were on warp drive tonight. Red-hot Heather - I can't believe what you did."

Spielberg to Direct SF Thriller

Sci Fi reports that Jonathan Nolan, the brother of Batman director Christohper Nolan, has been signed to write Interstellar, a film about explorers who go through a wormhole into another dimension. The film will be directed by Steven Spielberg.
The plot was informed by a scientific theory by Kip S. Thorne, a Caltech physicist and expert on relativity. His theory that wormholes exist and can be used for time travel intrigued Spielberg, who attended a Caltech workshop on the subject with Thorne and other scientists.

The film will not be going into production anytime soon, however. Spielberg already has the fourth installment of the Indiana Jones franchise beginning in June, and is expected to follow with a film about Abraham Lincoln. Nolan, who wrote the scripts for his brother's films Memento and The Prestige, also has a few films lined up ahead of Interstellar, including the next Batman film, The Dark Knight.
This sounds like a great project. We have to wonder why Spielberg is doing a project about Abraham Lincoln first. Is it because of that recent serious biography that caused all the controversy by reprinting letters from Lincoln to a male friend that had seriously gay overtones? Or is it just a straight-forward Lincoln kind of project? It seems an odd choice.

But back to Christopher Nolan: we love his writing. Both Memento and The Prestige were excellent films with great scripts.

Angelina Jolie is Wanted

Angelina Jolie's calendar is filling up fast. She just adopted a Vietnamese orphan and is heading back to the States with him tomorrow. She also just signed on to play the lead in a new film, Wanted, which is an action film based on a graphic novel. Timur Bekmambetov is directing. Morgan Freeman and James McAvoy will also star in the film, which begins shooting in Eastern Europe in May.
McAvoy will play a young man who discovers his father is an assassin, only to learn shortly thereafter that his dad has been murdered. The youth is drafted to follow in his father's footsteps. Jolie will play an assassin who teaches the ropes to the wannabe killer.

Script was originated by Michael Brandt and Derek Haas, and Jolie took the role after a rewrite by Dean Georgaris ("Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life") to tailor the character for her. Marc Platt, Jim Lemley, Jason Netter and Iain Smith will produce.

Deal marks the second recent U commitment for Jolie, who'll star this fall for director Clint Eastwood in drama "The Changeling," to be produced by Imagine Entertainment partners Brian Grazer and Ron Howard and Malpaso's Rob Lorenz.
Angelina recently told a Vietnamese newspaper that she was going to be a stay at home mom for now, to help new son Pax Thien Jolie adjust to his new life. So, we guess the kid has about six weeks to get adjusted before he, mommy, and four nannies move to Eastern Europe for awhile. Sounds about right.

The consensus from critics was that the film was not funny in the least, and that Critics Think They Didn't Love the Film.

Cate Blanchett May Join Indiana Jones Cast

Photo of Cate BlanchettCate Blanchett is in negotiations to star opposite Harrison Ford in the upcoming Indiana Jones movie, according to the L.A. Times.
Cate Blanchett is in negotiations to star opposite Harrison Ford in the long-awaited fourth installment of the "Indiana Jones" series, her publicist confirmed Saturday. "She is in negotiations, yes," publicist Lisa Kasteler told The Associated Press. She did not elaborate.

Filming is scheduled to begin later this year, with Steven Spielberg on board to direct. The movie is being produced by "Star Wars" creator George Lucas' Lucasfilm Ltd. Ford played Indiana Jones in 1981's "Raiders of the Lost Ark," 1984's "Temple of Doom" and 1989's "The Last Crusade." Blanchett, who won a best supporting actress Oscar in 2004 for "The Aviator," starred in last year's "Notes on a Scandal" and "Babel."
We hope the negotiations go well. We'd like to see Cate take on the bad guys by Indy's side.

M. Night Shyamalan Looks to India for Financing

Variety reports that Indian media conglomerate UTV Motion Pictures will help finance M. Night Shyamalan's next film, which is entitled The Happening. The thriller is produced by Fox.
UTV confirmed that it will distribute the $57 million-budgeted pic in India and share in worldwide revenues, while Fox distributes worldwide. Fox boarded the pic earlier this month. UTV CEO Ronnie Screwvala, who was introduced to Shyamalan via CAA, flew to Philadelphia prior to Fox's commitment to hammer out a deal with Shyamalan.

"Fox is perfect because they have such strength in distribution and they see the film as a real tentpole for next summer," Screwvala said. Pic, which was based on a spec script, is skedded for release in summer 2008.

Shyamalan plans to lens "Happening" principally in Philadelphia, where he has shot most of his movies. But UTV isn't concerned that the pic won't have an Indian theme. "It is our ambition to be involved with Indian world directors," Screwvala said.
Shyamalan needs a hit -- The Lady in the Water was a critical and box office disaster.

Scarlett Johansson Signs Up For Third Woody Allen Film

Scarlett Johansson has signed on to star in her third Woody Allen film. Zap2it reports:
According to Variety, Johansson has booked a leading role opposite Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz in Allen's latest untitled film. Unlike "Match Point" and "Scoop," their two prior London-set collaborations, this latest film will shoot in Spain this summer.

Rebecca Hall, who co-starred with Johansson in "The Prestige," has also joined the cast. Don't ask what Allen's Spanish film is about, though. Nobody's saying. Allen also shot his upcoming project, "Cassandra's Dream" in England and the trade paper says that the "Annie Hall" and "Sleeper" auteur has already made plans to shoot his 2008 film (he's reliable, that Woody) in England.

Johansson has "The Nanny Diaries" and "The Other Boleyn Girl" on tap for release in 2007.
We loved both Scoop and Match Point, so we think this is a good thing. We also think that the Spanish setting is a plus: it should be interesting to see Scarlett and Penelope in a film together.

300 Rules the Box Office

Photo from the 300The cgi gorefest The 300 easily won the weekend box office this past weekend making $70,885,301. The movie, which is rated R for violence, has a cast of virtual unknowns (although the freaky Persian King Xerxes will be familiar to Lost fans). The film is a based on a comic book fantasy which tells the story of the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 B.C., in which 300 noble Spartans held off the massive Persian army at a mountain pass in Greece for three days. The Iranians are furious about the film, saying it portrays the Persians as sexually deviant, violent and depraved. But since the Iranian censors pretty much object to all Western films, it's hard to get too worked up over their latest denouncements. In any event, the box office numbers were a delightful surprise to Warner Bros.

In second place was Wild Hogs, which made 27,601,291 in its second week of release. In third place was Bridge to Terabithia, which made $6,779,315 in its fourth week of release. Ghost Rider made another $6,670,463 in its fourth week of release, and Zodiac made $6,641,870 in its fourth week of release.

Zeroes: Ordinary People With Relatively Pointless Abilities

NBC has created a funny viral video called "Zeroes" (via Lost Remote) for fans of the Heroes tv show. According to a Variety story the video clip has already been viewed over 1.5 million times. NBC has also owned up to making "Zeroes" after releasing the clip onto the Internet with no Peacock logo or credits.
But unlike most other network-created viral videos, "Zeroes" contained not a trace of evidence that it came from NBC.

No Peacock logo. No "Tune in Mondays at 9" message at the end. No credits whatsoever.

"It was an experiment," Manze says. "We wanted to see how far we could go, and we wondered if (auds) knowing we did it would be a detriment."

Project, made for about $17,000, was so clandestine that Manze says he didn't even tell "Heroes" creator Tim Kring about "Zeroes." Keeping the clip's origins a secret was a means of building up its credibility with potential viewers.
Here's the video in case you haven't seen it.

Lost: Enter 77

Photo of McPatchy from Lost[Spoilers Ahead for Episode 11, "Enter 77"]

Last night's Lost was just amazing. We loved it. Sawyer played ping pong to get all his belongings back, but got worked by Hurley's mad ping pong skills. Locke, Rousseau, Sayid and Kate went off to rescue Jack, but ran into the Flame Station, which is manned by a Russian guy named Mikhail. Jen Chaney over at the Washington Post has dubbed Mikhail "McPatchy" and from henceforth, he shall be referred to as such.

So, McPatchy shoots Sayid, then pretends to be the last survivng member of the Dharma Initiative. But Sayid's not buying it and violence ensues. This was a really intriguing episode. Sayid's flashback to his time as a chef in Paris was most enlightening. It seemed clear that he only confessed to torturing the woman who kidnapped him to make her feel better and to assuage his guilt over past acts. After all, in a previous episode Sayid refused to torture a woman named Nadia, whom he let escape. Nadia was also the name of the cat owned by McPatchy. And, speaking of that cat -- it was clearly the same cat as the one used in the Paris flashback scene.

We couldn't believe that Locke blew up another hatch. That's it -- he's officially banned from any more data entry on computers. The man is just obsessed. But, you know, in a good way. So what will happen next? We have no idea, but are thrilled that the show has been so great lately.

Obi-Wan's Cloak Sells for Over $100,000

The cloak worn by Alec Guiness as Obi Wan Kenobi in Star Wars has sold at a London auction for $104,200.
The cloak was part of what was considered to be Britain's largest auction of film and television costumes, Sky News said. An outfit worn by Sean Connery provided the day's biggest surprise, auctioneers at Bonhams said.

The two-piece tweed suit and hat he wore as Harrison Ford's dad in "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" was expected to fetch no more than $2,900. It sold for just under $51,000. Another Connery item -- a dinner jacket he wore as James Bond in the 1965 movie "Thunderball" -- sold for $64,000.
Obi Wan's cloak is a pretty cool thing to own. Still...$104,200? That's a lot of money for a cloak, even one worn by a famous Jedi Knight.

Geico Cavemen Get Their Own TV Show

Photo of the Geico cavemanThe Geico cavemen are about to get their own tv show.
ABC said Friday it had ordered a pilot for a comedy, tentatively titled Cavemen, that features the characters used in a series of ads by the insurance company.

In the ads, cavemen appear insulted by a Geico pitchman's claim that the company’s Web site is so easy to use that "even a caveman can do it." The potential series, one of 14 pilots that will be produced by Touchstone Television this spring, features the cavemen as they "struggle with prejudice on a daily basis as they strive to live the lives of normal thirty-somethings in 2007 Atlanta."

*****

The advertising copywriter who helped create the "cavemen" ads is writing the pilot, the studio said.
Hmmm...Cavemen living the lives of normal thirty-somethings in a major urban city...we're not seeing how this is a sitcom. Isn't it more of a documentary?

Heather Mills is Dancing With the Stars

Heather Mills, the soon to be ex-wife of Sir Paul McCartney has signed on to be a contestant in Dancing With the Stars. In an interview with Extra, Mills says that she hopes her prosthetic leg doesn't fall off.
Some might see Heather Mills' artificial leg as a drawback for "Dancing with the Stars," but Mills plans on using it as a weapon! In an interview with "EXTRA" correspondent Terri Seymour, Mills says, "Hopefully my leg will stay on ... it's very unlikely [it will come off] though it'd be funny to knock one of the judges out!"

Heather, who lost her left leg in 1993 after an accident involving a police motorcycle, seems an odd choice for a dancing competition, but she's not worried, "I have no fear, I'm quite happy to be thrown around." Between dance classes, Mills also is battling estranged hubby Paul McCartney in divorce court, with preliminary hearings starting today in London's High Court.
We don't even know where to start with this one. First off, we can't stand Heather Mills: she's a gold-digging bimbo who has nearly destroyed Paul McCartney's and his childrens' lives with her ghastly behavior during the divorce. She's coming to the U.S. because they can't stand her in Britain -- remember, Britain is where this show began. Of course, Sir Paul was an idiot for not making her sign a pre-nup. Our sympathies are with the long-suffering children, not the horrid stepmother.
