Mary Kate Olson Takes Role on Weeds

Mary-Kate Olsen has signed up to appear on the hit Showtime series Weeds, according to TV Guide.
Olsen will play Tara, a devoted Christian girl living in the newly developed megachurch community Majestic who becomes a love interest for Nancy Botwin's (Mary-Louise Parker) son Silas (Hunter Parrish). Olsen will appear in 10 of the 15 episodes of the show's third season, which premieres August 13.

Since their debut on ABC's hit comedy series "Full House" at age 9 months, Olsen and her twin sister, Ashley, have starred together in a string of kids- and tween-oriented series and movies for television and video. In 2001-2002 they starred in the ABC Family sitcom "So Little Time." They most recently starred in the 2004 feature comedy "New York Minute," which the two also produced.

Olsen's role on the edgy Showtime series about a pot-dealing mom (Parker) also is a departure from the wholesome, PG characters she and her sister have played and opens a new chapter in her acting career. Olsen's treatment in 2004 for an eating disorder was widely reported.

"'Weeds' isn't your 8 o'clock family fare," series creator and executive producer Jenji Kohan said. "It's an adult show with adult subject matter, and we're confident Mary-Kate is right for the role. She came in and read with Hunter and was absolutely charming and real and seemed like a great fit. Audiences have seen only one side of Mary-Kate, but here we'll see her in a whole new light."
This is an interesting career move for Mary-Kate. We suppose this means she's given up on college, though? That seems like a shame.

The Sims The Movie?

The SimsVariety is reporting that 20th Century Fox is going to make a movie based on The Sims, a popular computer game that simulates real life.
20th Century Fox has acquired feature rights to the life simulation computer game "The SIMS" from Electronic Arts, and has set project up with Fox-based John Davis.

The five-year-old franchise is the best selling PC game in history, with worldwide sales topping 85 million, bringing in over $1.6 billion. Pic will be a live-action version.

Steve Asbell is overseeing the project for Fox with SIMS Studio head Rod Humble managing the creative property for Electronic Arts. Brian Lynch will script; story is under wraps with talent yet to be named.

"'The SIMS has done an interactive version of an old story, which is what it's like to have infinite power and how do you deal with it," said Humble. "Given that that's an old story, you can imagine how easily that would translate to traditional story telling."
How are they going to make a movie about a game that simulates real life. A movie that simulates real life? A simulator of a simulator? The screenwriter is going to be under some heavy pressure to come up with a novel idea for this film. Focusing on the infinite power concept that SIMS Studio head Rod Humble mentioned may be key to developing a good script for this movie. Another question is which Sims will be the focus of the film because The Sims coming out in September for the Wii are a much cutesier version of the Sims than we have seen in the past. We are also curious as the whether the dreaded guinea pig virus will be in the Sims motion picture.

Cuba Gooding, Jr. Signs for Teen Comedy

Cuba Gooding, Jr. has signed to play a wise high school janitor in what is being billed as an edgy teen comedy in the mold of Napoleon Dynamite. The film is called Harold, which is not to be confused with the cult classic, Harold and Maude. The Hollywood Reporter explains:
"Harold" revolves around the title character, a premature balding young teen trying to adapt to a new high school. Gooding will play the school janitor who befriends and helps him through merciless teasing. Veteran "Saturday Night Live" writer T. Sean Shannon will make his directorial debut from a script written by him and Greg Fields. "It's in the vein of 'Napoleon Dynamite'," said Levy. His M.E.G.A and City Lights teamed to produce "The Ten," and sold North American rights to ThinkFilm and City Lights Home Entertainment for $4.5 million at January's Sundance Film Festival. They also produced the stark drama "Descent," starring and produced by Rosario Dawson.

The film will shoot in August in New York, aiming for a PG-13 rating, and producers are hoping to finish production in time for submission to Sundance. William Sherak of production co. Blue Star brought the project to Levy's attention, and both agreed Gooding was a good fit for the film.
This is as puzzling a casting news as we've heard in awhile. What is Cuba Gooding's agent doing to earn his 15% anyway? We're still reeling from Cuba's love scenes with Helen Mirren in Shadowboxer, the touching story of two assassins who...it's kind of hard to explain, actually. Rent it when you're feeling in the mood for something offbeat.

Shrek the Third Tops the Box Office

Photo of Josh Holloway

Shrek the Third ruled the box office this past weekend, making $121,629,270. In second place was Spider-Man 3 which made $29,022,026. In third place was 28 Weeks Later which made $5,454,168 in its second week.

In fourth place was Lindsay Lohan and Jane Fonda's George Rule, which made a miserable $3,745,880 in its second week of release. We think people are looking at it and saying "rental." We look at the reviews and think "not even a rental."

Heroes Season One Finale Goes Out With a Bang

Photo of Peter Petrelli in season 1 finale of Heroes

(Warning: Major Season 1 Finale Spoilers Ahead)

The first season finale of Heroes was tonight and it was excellent. Those who went and read the spoilers for the finale proably didn't enjoy it as much, but we resisted temptation -- barely! -- and went into the episode spoiler free. So, there defintely was more than meets the eye with Simone's father. It appears that he had the power to find out anything he wanted through his dreams. He told Peter that he came to him "because he needed to know." Apparently, what he needed to know is that Mama Petrelli is a very, very naughty girl. Still, at least in the end Nathan did the right thing. And Peter keeps becoming more and more intersesting as a character. We're a bit disappointed that his mentor, the Invisible Man, didn't show up to help him control his nuclear power, but surely he can survive the explosion? Or is he blown up into little, tiny bits in the sky over Manhattan? It's hard to see how either Peter or Nathan survived that one. Let's hope at least Peter did.

But it really, really bothered us that at the end no one was looking around for Sylar's body. So, of course he just slithered off into the tunnel system under the streets, leaving a bloody trail behind. We swear, if he finds the shape shifting girl Candice Wilmer (played by Missy Peregrym) and takes her power, we are going to be really unhappy. Because then Sylar is going to morph into Nathan and become president. Or at least a congressman.

We were happy that we finally found out H.R.G.'s first name: it's Noah. We were also relieved that Jessica and Nikki got merged, because that storyline was growing quite tedious. Now she's like Wonder Woman, so that works very well indeed.

Our favorite storyline of the evening was Hiro's. We were so relieved that Ando made it safely to his cubicle in Japan and that Hiro stepped up to the plate. But that ending! Hiro is in the 1600s in the middle of some kind of battle, with samurai on both sides! And one warrior has the flag with the mysterious symbol on it. Could Hiro's father really be the legendary Japanese swordsman, Takezo Kensei? Could he be immortal? Or at least, really long-lived? He did say he had been waiting a long time for a Nakamura child to manifest the power.

All in all, we give it an A+. Now it's time for Season 2.

New Heroes Will Arrive Soon

Photo of George Takei on Heroes Tim Kring, the producer of Heroes talked to Sci Fi about the upcoming season finale, which airs Monday, May 21st at 9:00 p.m. Eastern time. Kring said that the finale will introduce new characters which will become important to the show. (Spoilers ahead)
"There are several new characters coming in the immediate future," Kring said in an interview. "The idea of the show from the start was always to basically honor the origin story of the first sort of blush and discovery of these powers. And so, in order to do that, new characters will have to be cycled into the show. And by extension, older characters will cycle out of the show."

While the first year of the show was subtitled "Volume One: Genesis," the second season will be called "Volume Two: Generations."

"The idea of multiple generations has started to crop up on the show," Kring said. "And in the second season we will deal with that more, hence the title, 'Generations.' ... The idea was that we wanted to make it easy for viewers to be able to come on in the second season. And we thought if we wrapped the show too tightly around itself, so that you had to watch 23 episodes before, It would be harder for a new viewer to find the show. And we always want to be a show that has the barrier of entry low enough so that new viewers can join if they want."

Kring confirmed that the show will indeed end on a cliffhanger, but one that hopefully won't be frustrating for the viewers. "No, I think it'll be intriguing more than frustrating," he said. "The idea was to end one idea of the show, one story, and then slingshot you into the next season."
Last week's episode was absolutely awesome. To see Hiro's dad bust out the samurai moves was just amazing. We love George Takei and his casting as Kaito Nakamura was a brilliant choice. We hope Hiro's dad is featured in the stories about the older generation. He said that once he had allies, but some lost their way. Well, clearly one person who lost his way in a big time was Linderman. He is a healer who somehow ended up thinking that it was a good thing to nuke New York City. That's a pretty big change of focus. And what really happened to the Petrelli brothers' dad? And what is up with Mrs. Petrelli? We know she has a power, but what is it? We can't wait to find out.

Nickelodeon to Launch Bubble Guppies

Bubble Guppies

Nickelodeon is debuting a new animated kids show in 2008 called Bubble Guppies. The show will be targeted at preschoolers and is set in a CGI-animated underwater classroom.
Bubble Guppies is a new interactive, animated variety show for preschoolers set in a vibrant 3D, CGI-animated underwater classroom. Bubble Guppies has an emergent curriculum: ideas that emerge from preschoolers' own discoveries. Each episode will delve into a preschool topic from a variety of angles as the cast and viewers at home explore the swaying kelp forests, fantastical coral reefs, and undersea gardens of their aquarium-inspired surroundings. Bubble Guppies is created by Robert Scull, who also serves as executive producer on Nick Jr.'s The Backyardigans, and Jonny Belt, supervising art director and co-executive producer of The Backyardigans. Scull and Belt also developed the series along with Janice Burgess, creator of The Backyardigans.
There are other animated cartoon shows aimed at tots like Scholastic's The Wonder Pets (technically photo-puppetry). Nickelodeon already has a massive animated hit in SpongeBob SquarePants. SpongeBob has over 60 million+ monthly viewers. Nickelodeon is probably hoping for a similar hit at the young preschool level with Bubble Guppies.

Daniel Radcliffe Talks Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Daniel Radcliffe discusses the next Harry Potter film, Harry Potter adn the Order of the Phoenix, which will be released July 13, 2007. Daniel says the film is darker than the others and that Harry is becoming a more interesting character as the series progresses.
"On an emotional level there's much bigger stuff than I had to do in the fourth film, like obviously what happens to [a key character] and Harry's reaction to that," Radcliffe, 17, said in an interview during a break in filming last September at Leavesden Studios outside London.

In Order of the Phoenix, based on J.K. Rowling's book, Harry returns for his fifth year of study at Hogwarts and discovers that much of the wizarding community is in denial about the evil Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes). The new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Dolores Umbridge (Imelda Staunton), leaves the students unprepared to fight Voldemort, forcing Harry and his friends Hermione (Emma Watson) and Ron (Rupert Grint) to form "Dumbledore's Army."

Unlike the previous film, The Goblet of Fire, Order of the Phoenix is more about political intrigue and the search for the truth. "There's no major physical action set pieces, other than, of course, the final standoff between Voldemort and Harry and Harry and Voldemort and all the Death Eaters and the Order of the Phoenix," Radcliffe said. "That's going to be pretty spectacular, I think." Radcliffe added: "Harry goes through what every teenager goes through, in a way. He feels angry. And, of course, Harry's feelings are exacerbated by the fact that he has had all of these troubles in his life, and ... [he] has had people trying to kill him at numerous times, really."

Harry turns to Sirius Black (Gary Oldman), worried that he may be turning into a bad person himself. "There's a lot going on inside of his head, and I think that, for me as an actor, that makes him more interesting to do," Radcliffe said. "And I think, for an audience, he becomes a more charismatic sort of character to watch, because he is so of two different sides."
If you missed it, you can see the trailer for the film here.

Warner Bros. Remaking Clash of the Titans

Clash of the Titans 1981A remake of the 1981 Clash of the Titans movie is in the works. Slashfilm reports that Lawrence Kasdan has been hired to write the remake for Warner Bros.
Kasden was a legendary screenwriter whose credits included Return of the Jedi, The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Big Chill. The once great screenwriter has had a run of bad luck in the last ten years, turning out two films (and only two films) that were less than successful Mumford and Dreamcatcher. It's exciting to imagine that Kasden will make a huge comeback (both creatively and financially) with this one.
The film will need to cast a few stars to draw fans to the theatres. Who will play Perseus, Medusa and Poseiden? Who will replace Ursula Andress as the beautiful Aphrodite? The 1981 film was known for its unique special effects including giant scorpions that emerged from a few drops of Medusa's blood. With a good budget they could do much more with today's advanced special effects technology.

Spider-Man 3 Breaks Box Office Records

Photo of Spider-ManSpider-Man 3 has broken box office records, making an amazing $148 million in the U.S. alone in its opening weekend. Worldwide, the film brought in $375 million, breaking the records of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith and Pirates of the Carribean.

In second place was Disturbia, which made $5,720,000 in its fourth week. Fracture came in third making $3,420,000 in its third week of release.

Drew Barrymore's poker romance film, Lucky You, had a dismal opening making only $2,515,000. The film also stars Eric Bana, but it clearly was not the date movie of choice this past weekend. Looks like there's going to be a fourth Spider-Man movie. How could there not be with those box office numbers?

Michael Douglas to Return as Gordon Gekko

Photo of Michael Douglas from Wall StreetMichael Douglas is set to reprise the role that won him an Oscar: playing ethically-challenged financier Gordon Gekko in the film Wall Street. A sequel is in the works, and Douglas is on board for the role. The film will be called Money Never Sleeps.
The title comes from one of Gekko's memorable lines, which also famously included: "Greed is good." The character came to represent the worst corporate excesses of the 1980s. Mr Pressman told the New York Times that Gekko went to jail at the end of the first film - but would not give details of the sequel's plot. Original director Oliver Stone has turned down the opportunity to make the follow-up, the paper said.

Charlie Sheen co-starred in the original, but it was Douglas who won most plaudits, being named best actor at the 1988 Oscars for his role. Gordon Gekko's words of wisdom:

"Greed, for lack of a better word, is good. Greed is right. Greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit."

"No feelings. You don't win 'em all, you don't love 'em all, you keep on fighting and if you need a friend, get a dog."

"We make the rules - the news, war, peace, famine, upheaval, the cost of a paper clip... you're not naive enough to think we're living in a democracy are you? It's the free market."
And, of course, Gekko's second most famous line was "Lunch? Are you joking? Lunch is for wimps." So, how will they bring back Gekko? A plea deal? He'll have served his time and become a dot com billionaire? That would work. Or maybe he's doing arms deals now. That would also work. He'll need an innocent young man to corrupt, of course. Because there is no better mentor on greed than Gordon Gekko. Charlie Sheen is too old...we're thinking Bradley Cooper...or... Milo Ventimiglia from Heroes. That's it!
