No Doubt Sues Activision Over Band Hero

Rock band No Doubt is suing Activision for breach of contract. The gamer has used images of the band members in a way that was not approved by the band for the game Band Hero.
n a suit filed Wednesday in Los Angeles Superior Court, the veteran ska-rock group claims that "Band Hero" users have the ability to manipulate No Doubt members, both collectively and individually, into singing popular songs by other artists -- something the band said they didn't sign up for. "No Doubt agreed to place avatars containing their name and likeness performing three No Doubt songs in the upcoming 'Band Hero,'" the group said in a statement.

The game, released Tuesday by Activision, uses the likeness of No Doubt members in more than 60 songs, "which are not appropriate for No Doubt and have not been and would not have been chosen by No Doubt for recordings or public performances." Activision has declined to comment on the suit, while No Doubt adds that the vidgame maker has refused to alter the title, "claiming the necessary fix would be too expensive."
Activision says it would be too expensive to make the changes, but No Doubt is not amused that their images can be manipulated by the users into looking and acting in ways that are offensive to the group. Who wins this case will depend entirely on what the contract says. If No Doubt's attorneys did their job, this is a slam dunk. If they didn't spell out how the images could be used, No Doubt is in trouble.

Joss Whedon to Direct Episode of Glee

Glee LogoJoss Whedon will be directing an upcoming episode of Glee. We just couldn't be more excited. We loved the Buffy musical episode, "Once More With Feeling" and "Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog." So how did this happen? Michael Ausiello explains:
Turns out, the genius who gave us not only the "Once More, With Feeling" musical episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer but also Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog is a big fan of Ryan Murphy’s new phenom. So when Twentieth (the studio behind Glee) approached him about the gig, pretty much his only reservation was scheduling.

"Joss directed one of the great musical episodes in the history of television on Buffy," gushes Murphy, "so this is a great, if unexpected, fit. I'm thrilled he’ll be loaning us his fantastic groundbreaking talent."
We just cannot wait for this. Now, let's talk guest stars. We're thinking Sarah Michelle Gellar needs to get a babysitter and get to the Glee set. Or James Marsters -- he has his own rock band. Or Neil Patrick Harris? Better yet, how about all three of them?

Justin Timberlake Cast in Facebook Movie

Justin Timberlake has been cast as the co-founder of Napster in the new film about the formation of Facebook. David Fincher is directing the film which features a screenplay by Aaron Sorkin.
Jesse Eisenberg will play founder Mark Zuckerberg, Justin Timberlake will play Sean Parker, the Napster co-founder who became Facebook's founding president, and Andrew Garfield will play Eduardo Saverin, the Facebook co-founder who fell out with Zuckerberg as the social network became a financial juggernaut.

*****

The pic focuses on the evolution of Facebook, the social network created in 2004 on the Harvard campus. And how overnight success and wealth changes the lives of the classmates who created it. The trio were the subject of internet rumors as Fincher zeroed in on his leads.
Production on the film will begin in October in Boston, and then will move to Los Angeles. Justin Timberlake is determined to be a triple threat, but so far his film career hasn't taken off. Will this be his breakthrough role?

According to Kryiss Grant, one of the dancers involved (who was also an usher at MJ's burial), some rehearsals have lasted 15 hours a day. Once Janet is finished honoring her brother, Grant tells us "there won't be a dry eye in the house."

Jerry Seinfeld, Rihanna to be Jay Leno's First Guests

Jerry Seinfeld will be Jay Leno's first guest on his new prime time talk show, according to Variety. The Jay Leno Show premieres on September 14.
Seinfeld also is expected to do standup. Also appearing on the first show will be Jay Z, Kanye West and Rihanna. Leno is taking the 10 p.m. slot Monday through Friday, a move that may make financial sense for the network but has rankled many in the creative community.

Seinfeld will also appear on HBO later this year as he and the rest of the "Seinfeld" troupe will appear on "Curb Your Enthusiasm." In addition, he has reality show "The Marriage Ref" set for NBC in midseason.
This will be Rihanna's first interview since the Chris Brown battery case. Will she talk to Jay about it? It's going to be hard for him to avoid asking questions about the subject.

Michael Jackson's Memorial Service Watched by Millions

Michael Jackson's memorial service was held today at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and was broadcast for free around the globe. The two hour program was tasteful and moving, with low-key performances by Jermaine Jackson (who sang Michael's favorite song "Smile" by Charlie Chaplin"), Mariah Carey, Stevie Wonder and Lionel Ritchie. Queen Latifah read a poem written for the occasion by Maya Angelou, Brooke Shields spoke of her friendship with Michael and Motown founder Berry Gordy talked about Michael's life. But the most moving moment came at the very end when Michael's daughter Paris, while choking back tears, spoke of her love for her father. Katie Couric reports:

ADG Will Refund $85 Million Worth of Michael Jackson Concert Tickets

Concert promoter AEG will refund $80 million worth of tickets sold to the Michael Jackson concerts this summer, due to the singer's premature death.
Concert promoter AEG Live will offer full refunds to those who bought tickets to Michael Jackson's "This Is It" concerts at the O2 Arena in London. Tickets must have been purchased through an authorized agent. Refunds will include all ticket service charges.

The first in Jackson's 50-concert series was skedded for July 13. Jackson died at age 50 on Thursday after going into cardiac arrest. He had been vigorously rehearsing for the 50-show stand at the Staples Center the day before his death AEG said that those who would rather be sent the actual tickets -- designed by Jackson -- may request them in lieu of a refund. "Since he loved his fans in life, it is incumbent upon us to treat them with the same reverence and respect after his death," AEG prexy-CEO Randy Phillips said in announcing the refund policy.
AEG is a part of billionaire Philip Anschutz's Anschutz Corp. AEG is looking at a huge loss on the deal unless it can get the insurer to pay up. Michael Jackson had to pass a physical to get insured for the concerts, but with the recent revelations about Jackson's severe drug addictions we have to wonder: who did the physical exam that said Jackson was in excellent health? You can get more details at Michaeljacksonlive.com.

Hugh Jackman Drops Out of Cleopatra Musical

Hugh Jackman has dropped out of Steven Soderbergh's upcoming film, which is a rock musical version of Cleopatra starring Catherine Zeta-Jones.
No deal had been signed as the ambitious $30 million project is completing its financing, but Soderbergh asked his "Traffic" star Zeta-Jones to play Cleopatra and wanted new Oscar host Jackman to play her lover, the Roman general Marc Antony. Discussions are reportedly in the works for the role of Julius Caesar to be played by Ray Winstone, the "Beowulf" star who just completed shooting the Martin Campbell-directed "Edge of Darkness" with Mel Gibson.

Soderbergh has said he wants to inject the famous historical love story with rock n' roll songs and a style akin to an Elvis musical. The music was written by the indie rock band Guided by Voices, and the script is by the group's former bass player, James Greer, who is also an author. Jackman's exit is attributed by insiders to scheduling conflicts, though it is not clear what other project is on his plate.
Hugh Jackman has made his first wise decision of 2009. Did we mention the film will also be in 3-D? Because just when you think a project couldn't be any more ridiculous, it gets worse. What in the world is Catherine Zeta-Jones thinking?

Dirty Dancing Heads to Broadway

A stage version of the hit film Dirty Dancing is headed to Broadway, most likely at the Neil Simon theater in the fall of 2009.
No official plans have been confirmed, but legiters are hearing the hit stage version of the 1987 pic has set its sights on the Rialto venue that "Hairspray," set to shutter in January, has occupied since July 2002.

A Gotham run of "Dirty Dancing -- The Classic Story Onstage," which opened earlier this week in Chi, has long been a no-brainer. Show already has proved popular in hit runs in Hamburg, London and Toronto. Chi engagement, which stars Amanda Leigh Cobb and Josef Brown, is billed as pre-Broadway, although no firm timeline was announced.

Production, penned by Eleanor Bergstein based on her screenplay, hews closely to the plot of the movie, centering on a romance in the Catskills in 1963. Songs from the pic are used in the show, although since none of the lead actors sing, the legit version will not necessarily be considered a musical.
This is one film that translates very easily to the stage. Will they recast the Chicago actors? Nothing is settled yet.

American Psycho: the Musical

American Psycho is headed for Broadway. It's going to be a musical. No, really.
An '80s-tinged tuner adaptation of "American Psycho" has begun the development process and is aiming for Broadway. Legit version of the 1991 Bret Easton Ellis novel, about a 1980s Wall Street banker who is also a serial killer, will come from the Johnson-Roessler Co., management-production company the Collective and XYZ Films. The three shingles have partnered to acquire the rights to develop and produce the stage incarnation.

"Psycho" was previously adapted into a 2000 Lionsgate pic that starred Christian Bale. Development team has just begun the selection process for creatives to pen the score and the book. No timeline has been set for what is envisioned as a large-scale musical.

Graphically bloody novel, which juxtaposes Reagan-era decadence and gruesome killings, includes prominent references to bands of the era, a fact that contributed to the idea of musicalizing the story. Sounds of the time will influence the new show's score.
How incredibly weird. But hey -- if they can make Titanic into a musical, they can make anything into a musical. Still, American Psycho without Christian Bale is like...well, American Psycho Lite.

Russell and Britney Deliver the Ratings For MTV

Photo of Britney Spears and Russell Brand

The VMAs were a big ratings success.
MTV took a risk in choosing a relative unknown -- British comedian Russell Brand -- to host the 2008 installment of the Video Music Awards, the network's premiere annual awards special. Now the risk appears to have paid off, as the 2008 VMAs delivered significant improvements over last year's show in the 12-34 demo MTV targets.

According to Cable Fast National data, the 2008 installment of the VMAs delivered a 7.4 18-34 rating for the network, a 15% increase over 2007 and 41% increase over 2006. The show was the highest-rated telecast on all of cable in the 12-34 demo this year.

When the simulcast on MTV2 is taken into account, the VMAs delivered an 8.1 grossed rating in the demo across the two networks. All told and across the two networks during its time period, the 2008 VMAs reached more than 23 million viewers two-plus, with more than 12 million 12-34. The VMA preshow also delivered an improvement over 2007, averaging a 4.1 12-34 rating, up 32% over last year. Also seeing a boost from the VMAs was MTV.com. VMA-related pages on the site delivered more than 10 million page views, a 110% increase over last year.
Last year's show was a bore. This one was much better produced, with tighter writing. Russell Brand is now considered the goods: he delivered the ratings and some controversy, which just makes network execs giddy with happiness. And as for Britney, it's clear that she was the main reason people tuned in. We like Britney and Russell together -- their promos were hilarious. She didn't seem to know how to handle him, which just made it all the funnier.

Jo Jo Turned Down Hannah Montana Role

Jo JoITV reports in the video below that young singing sensation Jo Jo (aka Joanna Levesque) actually turned down the opportunity to star in Disney's hit TV show Hannah Montana. This was before the show became a huge hit on Disney and helped launch the career of Miley Cyrus, who is now starting to overshadow the show. We liked Jo Jo in the fun mermaid movie Aquamarine. Jo Jo's only seventeen and she can both act and sing well so she should manage a successful career of her own without the need for Hannah Montana. Jo Jo has no regrets for saying "No" to Hannah. She's down for far more serious roles including a role in a Lifetime adaptation of True Confessions of a Hollywood Starlet.

Keira Knightley is Eliza Doolittle

Keira Knightley is set to star in a remake of My Fair Lady. The film will be just like the classic: set in 1912, it will be a musical.
While it's being called an update, the film will use the tuner's score and retain its 1912 setting. Where possible, Kenworthy and Mackintosh intend to shoot the film on location in the original London settings of Covent Garden, Drury Lane, Tottenham Court Road, Wimpole Street and the Ascot racecourse. (The 1964 Warner Bros. film was lensed entirely on Hollywood soundstages.)

The filmmakers plan to adapt Alan Jay Lerner's book more fully for the screen by drawing additional material from George Bernard Shaw's play "Pygmalion," which served as the source material for the musical. The goal is to dramatize the emotional highs and lows of Doolittle as she undergoes the ultimate metamorphosis under the tutelage of Professor Henry Higgins.

"This update will preserve the magic of the musical while fleshing out the characters and bringing 1912 London to life in an authentic and exciting way," said Col co-president Doug Belgrad.

Kenworthy, who worked with Knightley on "Love Actually," said, "With 40 years of hindsight, we're confident that by setting these wonderful characters and brilliant songs in a more realistic context, and by exploring Eliza's emotional journey more fully, we will honor both Shaw and Lerner at the same time as engaging and entertaining contemporary audiences the world over."
Keira Knightley is no Audrey Hepburn and this is a terrible idea.

Nicole Kidman and Judi Dench to Star in Nine

Nicole Kidman and Judi Dench are reportedly starring in Nine, the film adaptation of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical.
The Oscar-winning pair are in talks to join Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz, Marion Cotillard and Sophia Loren in Rob Marshall's adaptation of the Tony-winning Broadway musical. The 1982 show, itself an adaptation of Federico Fellini's autobiographical opus "8 1/2," revolves around a film director (Bardem) juggling the demands of several women in his life.

*****

Plenty of people are familiar with Kidman's singing and dancing chops from "Moulin Rouge," but far fewer are aware of Dench's extensive musical theater experience. She played Sally Bowles in the original London production of "Cabaret" in 1968, and won the 1995 Olivier Award for best actress in a musical in a revival of Stephen Sondheim's "A Little Night Music."
The film will begin shooting after Nicole gives birth this summer and has a bit of maternity leave. And as for Judi Dench -- we had no idea that she was the original Sally Bowles. What fun that would have been to see!

Johnny Depp Talks Sweeney Todd

Screenshot of Sweeney Todd Johnny Depp reveals how disturbing it was to film one scene in his new hit movie, Sweeney Todd.
The 44-year-old actor says that a simple flashback scene in 'Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street' had him and director Tim Burton shaken to their cores. It was when young Sweeney's happy life before he was sent to prison by the judge. Although seemingly normal, the actor and the director who created the movie couldn't stomach it. "I think that was the weirdest thing I ever had to shoot," Depp says in an interview. "[Burton] literally was sobbing. He left the set of his own movie." The 49-year-old director says the melodrama of the scene was too much to bear. "That's when I knew [Depp] was a great actor, because that was terrible. That was so bad."

*****

"That and having to soap up Alan Rickman's face were two of the scariest moments, maybe of my life," quips Depp.
Sweeney Todd has gotten rave reviews from critics and has been nominated for a number of Golden Globe awards.

Cate Blanchett Plays Bob Dylan

Here is some footage of Cate Blanchett playing Bob Dylan in an upcoming biopic. Yes, that's right -- she's playing a man in the film. Several other actors will also play Dylan as he ages. That's David Cross as Allen Ginsberg. It's pretty freaky. Does Cate playing a man effectively equal Oscar nomination?

Live Earth to Be Biggest Concert in Earth's History

Photo of MadonnaBe sure to tune in to the fabulous concerts that former Vice President Al Gore has spent so much time organizing. The concert will happen over a 24 hour period on 7-7-07, starting in Australia and moving on to many cities, such as London, Shanghai, China, Germany, Rio de Janero, Antarctica and Washington, D.C. The event is not to raise money (although the cost of the event is covered by donations and ticket prices). The point of the event is to raise awareness of Global Warming.

The lineup of performers is all-star: Jon Bon Jovi, Tricia Yearwood, Garth Brooks, Duran Duran with Justin Timberlake, Shakira, Fall Out Boy, John Mayer, Lenny Kravitz, The Black Eyed Peas and just about everyone who's anyone in music will be there. Even legendary band Spinal Tap is scheduled to perform. We hope they do "Stone Henge"! Vice president Gore told Larry King that there will be surprise performances, as well. Madonna will close the concert at Wembley Stadium in England, which is going to be amazing.

The concert kicks off tonight when 7-7-07 starts in Sydney Australia. MSN will be streaming the entire concert live, which is the best way to see the entire thing -- especially for American viewers who want to see the concert from Wembley Stadium in England, which is going to rock. Christina Aguilera is Reading Scripts

Christina Aguilera ActressThe Associated Press reports that Christina Aguilera wants to be a movie star and she is busy reading screenplays.
Christina Aguilera says she's reading scripts in search of the right role to launch an acting career.

"I am looking forward to moving into another form of what I feel is another creative outlet for me and that would be acting," the singer, 26, said Monday in Shanghai, where she was to perform her first mainland China concert.

Aguilera said she was taking her time understanding the film industry.
TMZ.co is warning Christina Aguilera to avoid films other music stars have made like Mariah's Glitter and Britney Spears' Crossroads. Hillary Duff, who is more established as an actress, also had a film one called Raise Your Voice that was more watchable than these two. Will Xtina's first film be another film where a young woman finds her path to music stardom? We will hold out hopes for more but we won't hold them too high.

Jennifer Aniston to Produce Goree Girls

Jennifer Aniston has signed to produce and possibly star in a film set in the 1940s about one of the country's first female country recording acts, the Goree Girls, for DreamWorks Pictures.
The actress is on board to produce and likely star in the 1940s song-laden comedy about one of the nation's first all-female country acts, a group whose members were also guests of the Texas penal system. Aniston will be joined by seven other singin' and pickin' actresses cast as part of the Goree All Girl String Band, which is remembered as the Dixie Chicks of its day for the radio performances it put on from a Texas music hall.

Aniston and her producing partner, Kristin Hahn, hired Margaret Nagle (HBO's "Warm Springs") to adapt the screenplay from a Texas Monthly article. DreamWorks, Aniston and Hahn have sent the script out in search of a director with no scheduled production start to date. The group of eight female Texas prisoners performed live every Wednesday evening in the early 1940s to an estimated 7 million Americans tuned into radio station WBAP-AM in Fort Worth.

The women - some of whom were in prison for cattle rustling, robbery and murder - joined together with the hope of "singing their way out" of Goree State Farm, a few miles south of Huntsville, according to Skip Hollandsworth, who wrote the 8,000-word profile "O, Sister Where Art Thou?" for Texas Monthly in May 2003.

The women were allowed to change out of their prison uniforms (starched white linen dresses) and into light tan shirts, brown western-style skirts, white cowboy boots and, tied around their necks, brown bandannas each week for their public appearances, thanks to the Texas prison system's bid for a little favorable publicity following reports of escapes, beatings and gunfights in their facilities.
So, it's kind of like The Dixie Chicks meet Oh, Brother, Where Art Thou?. Right? We can work with that.

    Milli Vanilli The Movie?

Milli VanilliReuters is reporting that Universal Pictures plans to make a film about the Milli Vanilla, that classic lip synching fraudster duo from the early 90s.
Hollywood trade paper Daily Variety reported in its Thursday issue that Universal Pictures is developing a film about the lip-synching combo, who lost their coveted Grammy for best new artist in 1990 when it emerged that they had never sung on their records.

The project will be written and directed for the General Electric Co.-controlled studio by Jeff Nathanson, who previously wrote the Leonardo DiCaprio crime caper "Catch Me If You Can." He has secured the cooperation of Milli Vanilli alumnus Fabrice Morvan, who has been pursuing a comeback for years, as well as the estate of his colleague, Rob Pilatus, who died of a drug overdose in 1998.

"I've always been fascinated by the notion of fakes and frauds, and in this case, you had guys who pulled off the ultimate con, selling 30 million singles and 11 million albums and then becoming the biggest laughing-stocks of pop entertainment," the paper quoted Nathanson as saying.
We are glad that this incredibly important subject is finally getting the attention it deserves. It sounds like an Oscar shoe-in. Here are the most memorable lyrics in case you forgot them. We found them here on a site called Crap From the Past.

    I'm in love girl,
    I'm in so love girl.
I'm just in love girl, and this is true.
    Girl, you know it's true.
Ooh, Ooh, Ooh I love you.
    Yes, you know it's true.
Ooh, Ooh, Ooh I love you.
    Girl, you know it's true.
    My love is for you.
    Girl, you know it's true.
    My love is for you.

    Here's the music video.

    Prince's Giant Guitar

Photo of Prince at the SuperbowlPrince's Superbowl halftime performance was excellent. He sounded great. No one had a wardrobe malfunction. He played "Purple Rain" in the rain. He covered a Foo Fighters song in a cool new way. He even sacrificed his hair covering to an adoring fan, while allowing his hair to get wet. It was totally G-rated.... or was it?

It was, except for the giant phallus that was revealed to the crowd in silhouette. Ah, Prince. We knew you hadn't really gone mainstream. Slipped that one right by the censors. Well played.
