Pitch Perfect 2 Tops Box Office With $70 Million Opening Weekend

Posted on May 17, 2015

Pitch Perfect 2 dominated the box office this weekend. It opened with $70 million to keep it well ahead of Max Max: Fury Road and Avengers: Age of Ultron. It ranks as the highest opening musical of all-time. The film is directed by Elizabeth Banks.

The $70 million opening was more than the original Pitch Perfect film made for its entire box office gross ($65 million) in 2012. Many people apparently have seen the original film on rental and become fans of the show and decided to head to theaters for the sequel. Deadline reports that 75% of moviegoers to PP2 were female. The film did not cool off on Saturday as sometimes happens to films with a strong female audience.

Mad Max: Fury Road had a strong opening of $44.4 million for a $12,000 per theater average. It has a B+ CinemaScore while Pitch Perfect 2 has an A-. Mad Max did defeat the Bellas overseas, where it made $65 million and Pitch Perfect 2 made $27 million.

Avengers: Age of Ultron made $38.8 million during its third weekend in theaters. It has now made $372 million domestically. Its global box office is already over $1.1 billion. Avengers was followed by Hot Pursuit, Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 and Furious 7. You can view the box office chart for the weekend here.

Pitch Perfect 2 and Mad Max: Fury Road will face Tomorrowland and Poltergeist.
