60 Minuts Scores Ratings Bonanza With Obamas Interview

60 Minutes scored big ratings with the special interview with Michelle and Barack Obama this past weekend.

CBS newsmag "60 Minutes" drew its largest audience in more than nine years Sunday for its interview with President-elect Barack Obama. NBC's "Sunday Night Football" and ABC's "Desperate Housewives" also had strong showings on the night.

National estimates from Nielsen are subject to revision due to time-zone differences, but preliminary affiliate-based figures show "60 Minutes" averaging a huge 6.4 rating/16 share in adults 18-49 and 24.5 million viewers overall. The newsmag, which devoted all three of its segments to Obama, aired from roughly 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the East due to an NFL overrun that delayed the start times of all of the Eye network's Sunday series.

The last time "60 Minutes" topped 24 million viewers was in January 1999.

60 Minutes has kind of been off our radar for the past few years, but it seems to be on a roll lately.

Hillary Duff Signs Development Deal With NBC

Hillary Duff is getting
her own NBC television show, according to Variety.

Under terms of the one-year talent and development deal, Peacock will develop a show starring Duff; thesp will also be tapped to guest star in various current NBC shows.
The Duff series would be produced by Universal Media Studios. Deal was announced by NBC Entertainment/ Universal Media Studios co-chairman Ben Silverman.
Duff will meet with writers and comb through the Peacock's development for the right project to star in.

*****

In signing Duff, NBC Entertainment exec VP Teri Weinberg cited the thesp's "huge following" and versatility as a young talent. As a singer, Duff's album "Metamorphosis" sold more than 2 million copies and spawned several hit singles.

The trade paper reports that Hillary starred in an ill-fated 2004 CBS pilot that was not picked up. Hillary's next feature films, Safety Glass, Stay Cool and Greta, will all hit theaters in 2009.
She first rose to fame as the star of the Disney Channel's "Lizzie McGuire" (which later spawned "The Lizzie McGuire Movie"). She then appeared in features such as "Agent Cody Banks," "Cheaper by the Dozen" and "Raise Your Voice."

Robert Pattinson Talks Twilight

In case you've been in a coma for the past few months, there's a new vampire movie coming out called Twilight, based on the bestselling series by Stephenie Meyers. Robert Pattinson stars as Edward Cullen and his mere appearance at malls has cause riots. Seriously, it has. The hot film is already selling out its first showings in some locations. Here's Pattinson talking about the film.

Jaden Smith is the new Karate Kid

Get ready for yet another remake. This time it's The Karate Kid which originally starred Ralph Macchio as the young boy who learned about karate -- and life -- from the wise Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita). The movie will star Will Smith's little boy, Jaden.

Columbia Pictures is back in the dojo with a new version of the 1984 hit "The Karate Kid," which has been refashioned as a star vehicle for Jaden Smith.
The film will be produced by Jerry Weintraub (who launched the original franchise) and Overbrook Entertainment's James Lassiter, Will Smith and Ken Stovitz. Will Smith, who is the 10-year-old actor's father, co-starred alongside Jaden in his feature debut, "The Pursuit of Happyness," which Overbrook and Escape Artists produced for Columbia.

The script is being written by Chris Murphy, and the film will shoot next year in Beijing and other cities. While the new film will be set in that exotic locale, it will borrow elements of the original plot, wherein a bullied youth learns to stand up for himself with the help of an eccentric mentor.

Each time we think that the remake frenzy is abating, we're proven wrong yet again.

Twilight Selling Out First Showings

Tickets for the first showings up the upcoming vampire romance movie Twilight are selling out.

Twilight doesn?t open until two weeks from today (at midnight), but Fandango is reporting that nearly 100 show times for the November 21st release are already sold-out across the nation, from California to Florida. The Summit Entertainment vampire romance is looking like a low-cost blockbuster as it accounts for 63% of all ticket sales on Fandango, the nation's largest movie ticketing destination. Twilight sales are outpacing those of Disney's High School Musical 3 at the same point in that film's sales cycle (two weeks before its release date). The same phenomenon is happening at major online ticketseller MovieTickets.com. Despite being more than two weeks from its opening, Twilight accounted for 34% of ticket sales at MovieTickets.com on Monday and Tuesday of this week, putting it three percentage points ahead of MGM/Sony's Quantum of Solace (31%) which opens November 14.

MovieTickets.com says Twilight is boasting impressive "intent to see" numbers across the board: 77% of under-25 moviegoers aware of the movie intend to see it opening weekend, compared to 70% of 25-to-34 year-olds, 64% of 35-to-44 year-olds, and 70% of 45-to-59 year-olds.

Female fans are leading the way in early ticket sales and we think Robert Pattinson is a large part of the reason why.

Fox Announces Mid-Season Lineup

Fox has announced
its midseason schedule and Joss Whedon fans aren't going to be happy. Dollhouse was supposed to premiere on Mondays with 24. It's been moved to low-ratings Fridays, where it will be paired with Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Friday is not a place you put shows you want to do really well. The premiere date is Friday, February 13, 2009, which is just about as stupid as it gets. The producers noted that was the day that Angel was canceled in 2004.

-- "Idol" will premiere Jan. 13 at 8 p.m. and will include the usual two-hour, two-part rollout. "Idol" and "Fringe" will still partner on Tuesdays as planned.

-- Wednesday was originally going to have "House" leading into the "American Idol" results show. Now "Idol" has been shifted to 8 p.m. and will instead give TV's biggest lead-in to new drama "Lie to Me," which stars Tim Roth as a "human lie detector." Fox is very excited about this show, though it will likely to draw comparisons to CBS' freshman breakout title "The Mentalist."

-- Instead of reality block of "Hell's Kitchen" and "Secret Millionaire" on Thursdays, Fox will partner "Hell's" with a lead-in from "Bones." This is a promotion for the crime drama, which has performed strong this season. Fox had originally intended to shift "Bones" to Fridays in midseason. "Millionaire" will air in December.

-- "Hole in the Wall," despite many assuming the game show was a goner, is returning midseason to help launch Fox's Sunday animated block in the 7 p.m. hour.

Absent from the current schedule: Live-action comedy or new reality shows. No dates yet for Fox's new animated shows such "The Cleveland Show" either.

"Fringe" and "Dollhouse" are part of Fox's Remote-Free TV plan, where advertisers pay a premium to sponsor a show in exchange for Fox running about half as many ads per hour. In the case of "Fringe," the move has been successful, say media buyers who have studied the results. Fox says that even though "Dollhouse" changed time periods to Fridays, it will still be Remote-Free TV.

Well, it's good that there won't be as many commercials during Dollhouse. As for Fringe, the show is totally weird and we quite enjoy it.

Jack Bauer Returns in January

24 fans will finally get to see
the long-delayed seventh season of the show in January. On January 11 and January 12 Fox will air the two hour premiere.

Pre-empted last year due to the writer's strike, "24" returns for two hours on both nights before settling into its regular time period on Monday, Jan. 19 at 9 p.m.

*****

Fox hasn't yet officially confirmed whether the Joss Whedon frosh series "Dollhouse" will bow on Jan. 19 at 8 p.m. As originally announced at its May upfront presentation, "Dollhouse" is expected to be paired with "24" on Monday nights starting in January.

Dollhouse, which stars Eliza Dushku, went into production hiatus for a couple of weeks while Joss Whedon re-wrote the pilot and changed the cast lineup a bit. This made Whedon fans very nervous, given Fox's history with Firefly.

Talks Ongoing to Finance Spielberg's Tintin Project

Sony and Paramount are now in talks to finance Steven Spielberg's pet project Tintin. Quite a bit of money has been spent on the motion capture film, when Spielberg found out that his financing wasn't as secure as he thought. It now appears
that the film will go forward. But it's not a done deal yet.

Sony Pictures Entertainment and Paramount Pictures are in talks to co-finance the digital 3-D "Tintin," the Steven Spielberg/Peter Jackson series based on the Belgian "Tintin" comics.

After resolving the Paramount-DreamWorks divorce, putting together a studio deal for "Tintin" was next on Spielberg's agenda. After Universal balked at partnering on the first installment, which Spielberg will direct, Paramount offered to fully back the first movie with a reduced backend at $135 million for the two gross participants. When the filmmakers held out for a better deal, a partner became a viable alternative.

While neither Sony nor Paramount would comment, both confirmed talks were under way.
Spielberg had hoped to be in production by this fall. However, when financing fell apart at Universal on the eve of DreamWorks/Paramount divorce, he lost the participation of his lead actor Thomas Sangster. Nonetheless, "Tintin" is expected to be complete in time for a 2010 release. Jackson will direct the sequel.

This deal should have been wrapped up long ago. It's a sign of the current gloomy economic environment that Steven Spielberg can't just snap his fingers and get financing for a favorite project. He'll get the funding, of course.

Transporter 3 Trailer is Here

Jason Statham returns as Frank Martin, the ex-Special Forces agent who delivers dangerous things -- for a price. Yes, we're very happy to say it's Transporter 3. This time, he's being forced into a mission. If he goes 75 feet from his tricked out Audi, he dies. Here's the trailer.

Zac Efron is 17 Again

Matthew Perry and Zac Efron are starring in a film called 17 Again. In the film a divorced 40-something guy named Mike O'Donnell (Matthew Perry) suddenly finds himself 17 again. Zac Efron plays the 17-year-old Mike. While this does seem quite similar to many other movies -like Big and 13 Going On 30 - it still looks funny. The film comes out April, 2009. The film's website is here.

High School Musical 3: Senior Year Tops the Box Office

High School Musical 3: Senior Year topped the box office this past weekend, making $42,030,184. In second place was
Saw V, which made $30,053,954. In third place was
Max Payne, which made $7,600,000.

Beverly Hills Chihuahua hung on for fourth place, making another $6,884,387. That brings the film's cumulative take to an astonishing $78,110,782. We find that mind-boggling.

Knight Rider has been given
a full-season pickup.

NBC's critically maligned reboot of the '80s campfest has nabbed a full-season pickup, sources confirm to me exclusively. Producers were informed this evening that the Peacock was ordering the show's "back nine."

Despite middling ratings, KR has remained competitive in its Wednesday 8 p.m. time slot, particularly among young men who like bad TV.

We are mystified as to why in the world NBC would order more episodes of this show. It's awful. Other than Val Kilmer as the car: he's great. In more understandable news, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles has also been given a full-season pickup. That is one of our favorite shows: it has great acting, great action and excellent writing.

Dominic Monaghan to Visit Chuck

Dominic Monaghan will guest star on a future episode of Chuck. He plays a rock star. But before you say "hey, that was his character Charlie on Lost" you should listen to Dominic's explanation of his new character:

"This is a very, very different kind of character," insists executive producer Josh Schwartz of Monaghan's metalhead, who makes an in-store appearance at Buy More and ends up getting entangled in one of Chuck's spy games. "He's a lunatic in the best sense of the word. And there's no heroin [addiction]."

*****

What persuaded you to do it?

After meeting Josh Schwartz and reading the script, I realized that Charlie could never be this person. Charlie would not be a fan of Tyler. Charlie got into rock and roll for the music and to try and help himself in a therapeutic way. And I think Tyler got into rock and roll because he realizes that that's the easiest way to get free flights around the world. He's like Charlie in a hallucinogenic dream. He's like what Charlie would be in his most brilliant moment, but Tyler is like that all the time. So I thought it might be something that would tickle people to see.

We love Chuck and can't wait to see Dominic's appearance on the show. The Nicole Richie guest starring stint was quite entertaining: this season is really rocking the cool guest stars.

Dirty Dancing Heads to Broadway

A stage version of the hit film Dirty Dancing is headed
to Broadway, most likely at the Neil Simon theater in the fall of 2009.

No official plans have been confirmed, but legiters are hearing the hit stage version of the 1987 pic has set its sights on the Rialto venue that "Hairspray," set to shutter in January, has occupied since July 2002.

A Gotham run of "Dirty Dancing -- The Classic Story Onstage," which opened earlier this week in Chi, has long been a no-brainer. Show already has proved popular in hit runs in Hamburg, London and Toronto.
Chi engagement, which stars Amanda Leigh Cobb and Josef Brown, is billed as pre-Broadway, although no firm timeline was announced.

Production, penned by Eleanor Bergstein based on her screenplay, hews closely to the plot of the movie, centering on a romance in the Catskills in 1963. Songs from the pic are used in the show, although since none of the lead actors sing, the legit version will not necessarily be considered a musical.

This is one film that translates very easily to the stage. Will they recast the Chicago actors? Nothing is settled yet.

Daniel Craig Says No to Thor

Daniel Craig has said no
to Kenneth Branagh, who wanted Craig to play Thor in his upcoming film. But Craig felt that playing James Bond and Thor both would be a bit much.

007 Daniel Craig is not mighty Thor.
He's said no thanks to director/actor Kenneth Branagh to play the Uru hammer wielding Norse god/Marvel super-hero.
Branagh allegedly had the 007 star on his short list but Craig said nope.
Craig claimed it'd "too much of a power-trip" to play both 007 and Thor.

We can't imagine why Craig wouldn't want to be Thor, but hey, maybe he's tired of action films.

Nicole Richie Shows Off Her Fighting Skills

Now here's something you don't see everyday: Nicole Richie in a martial arts fight against another girl. Tonight, Nicole guest stars on one of our favorite shows, NBC's spy show, Chuck. In this short clip she shows off her fighting skills.

Ridley Scott to Direct The Forever War

Ridley Scott has signed on to direct the film version of Joe Haldeman's book, The Forever War.

After the disappointing box office performance of his film Body of Lies last weekend, the director Ridley Scott, below, has added an adaptation of Joe Haldeman's science-fiction novel The Forever War to his roster of projects, Variety reported. Mr. Scott first became interested in making a movie of the novel more than 25 years ago, after coming to prominence with the sci-fi films Alien and Blade Runner. Over the weekend Mr. Scott's Mideast spy thriller, Body of Lies, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe, grossed just $13.1 million at its opening, finishing in third place behind Beverly Hills Chihuahua and Quarantine. Mr. Scott?s next directorial effort is expected to be Nottingham, a retelling of the story of Robin Hood, starring Mr. Crowe as both Robin Hood and the Sheriff of Nottingham.

We certainly hope he has better luck with The Forever War than he did with Body of Lies. To be beaten by Beverly Hills Chihuahua is just humiliating -- and does not bode well for the future of moviemaking.

Will Ferrell Heads to Broadway

Will Ferrell is heading
for Broadway in a one man show called "You're Welcome America. A Final Night With George W Bush."

Production will be helmed by Adam McKay, the writer-director of Ferrell pics "Step Brothers," "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby" and "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy."
Plot of the show remains sketchy, but the title and timing suggest a Bush caricature and plenty of topical humor.

Production begins previews Inauguration Day, Jan. 20, ahead of a Feb. 1 opening at the Cort Theater. Limited engagement is skedded to shutter March 15.
Writing credits have not yet been confirmed, although it seems likely Ferrell and McKay will collaborate on the script, since the duo co-wrote the screenplays for all three of their prior pic outings.

If the show is anything like Ferrell's on-target impersonations of President Bush, it will be hilarious. It will sell out, no question.

Terrence Howard Replaced By Don Cheadle

Terrence Howard seems bent on career suicide. He demanded too much money to appear in Iron Man 2 and now he's been replaced
with Don Cheadle.

Don Cheadle is stepping in to replace Terrence Howard in "Iron Man 2," Marvel Studios' sequel to its summer blockbuster.
In the movie, Howard played Jim Rhodes, Tony Stark/Iron Man's best friend and future armor-clad hero War Machine. One scene featured Howard looking at a silver suit of armor and saying "Next time," a line that caused great delight for fans.
But there will be no next time for Howard.

Marvel had no comment, but sources close to the deal said negotiations with Howard fell through over financial differences, among other reasons. Marvel, which had wanted to work with Cheadle, then decided to take the role in another direction and approached the actor, who is shooting Antoine Fuqua's "Brooklyn's Finest" with Richard Gere and Ethan Hawke.

Rhodes is expected to play a larger part in the sequel, which is rumored to go beyond high-tech villains. Justin Theroux is writing the screenplay.

Robert Downey Jr. will return as Tony Stark/Ironman and Gwyneth Paltrow will return as his loyal assistant Petter Potts. We love Don Cheadle and think he'll do a great job.

YouTube Goes Long

YouTube has announced
that it will begin playing full episodes of tv shows, not just clips. There will be ads embedded before, during and after the episodes.

Executives at the Google-owned property said the decision to break from the site's traditional emphasis on short video clips was based on demand from its own user base and the fact that long form Web viewing has proven popular on other sites such as ABC.com. YouTube has been quietly exceeding it's previous nine-minutes-or-less limit for video length by offering several documentaries and excerpts from political debates, and it's users have responded positively, said officials.

"This is about giving the community what they want, said Jordan Hoffner, YouTube's director of content partnerships, YouTube "Plus, we're not blind to the growth of long form on other sites."
But with the move, YouTube is clearing moving to where the money is in online video. It's been well documented that Google has had trouble cashing in on the millions of user-generated clips the site streamed, while advertisers have gravitated to running spots within primetime series via the CBS Audience Network, Hulu, and other sites.

Hoffner wouldn't comment on whether YouTube's shift in strategy is based on the perceived financial success of the Hulus of the world. "I've never seen Hulu's books," he said. "This is just the right strategy for us. There is money in a lot of places. We're making good on our pledge to give advertisers choice." Hoffner added that YouTube will announce several additional content partners in the coming weeks.

At first the deal with CBS only includes older shows such as the old 90210 and Star Trek. It will have new shows from Showtime such as
Dexter and Californication. YouTube is really late to this party. We like to watch on Hulu.com -- it has the best interface for watching full episodes of current shows with minimal commercial interruptions.

Anne Hathaway is the White Queen

Anne Hathaway has signed on to play the White Queen in Tim Burton's film version of Alice in Wonderland. Helena Bonham Carter will play the Red Queen and Johnny Depp will be the Mad Hatter.

The movie, which stars Mia Wasikowska as Alice and Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, will use a combination of live action and performance-capture technology to tell the Lewis Carroll story.

Hathaway is playing the White Queen, a benevolent monarch who is deposed and banished by her sister, the Red Queen (Carter), who has an affinity for crying out, "Off with their heads!" The White Queen needs Alice to slay a creature known as the Bandersnatch.

We think Johnny Depp will do a fabulous job as the Mad Hatter. But Anne Hathaway is an odd casting choice for the White Queen. Still, perhaps she'll surprise us all with an interesting characterization.

New Pajanimals Show Stars Four Cuddly Puppets

PBS Kids Sprout has announced Pajanimals, a show featuring a new group of puppet characters from The Jim Henson Company. The show will begin Sunday, November 2, 2008. Pajanimals features four soft, cuddly puppets created by LA-based artist Jeff Muncy (Pet Alien) and designed and built by the Jim Henson's Creature Shop. Pajanimals entertains preschool viewers with bedtime-themed songs that focus on issues like sleeping through the night and being comfortable with the lights out.

Pajanimals features Sweetpea Sue, a shy, smart pony who never forgets her bedtime routine of brushing her teeth, washing her face and putting on her PJs; Squacky, an excitable duck who sometimes has a hard time settling down at night; Cow Bella, a creative, well-mannered cow with an Italian accent who encourages the rest of the bunch to "do the right thing" around bedtime; and Apollo, an upbeat, optimistic puppy who loves space adventures but experiences separation anxiety.

"Every parent knows that bedtime battles are no fun for anyone and it is our hope that Pajanimals will help our young audience transition from daytime into a peaceful evening routine," said Lisa Henson. "Sprout is an established destination for preschoolers and their adult co-viewers and is an ideal home for these new characters."

Here's a video preview of Pajanimals.

Murray Interested in Ghostbusters 3

Bill Murray says
that he's definitely open to being a part of the proposed Ghostbusters sequel.

Bill Murray told reporters that he's open to reprising his Ghostbusters role of Dr. Peter Venkman in a proposed third movie.
"The third one could happen," Murray said in a news conference in New York on Oct. 3.
Murray--who voiced Venkman in the upcoming Ghostbusters: The Video Game--added that he's aware that Columbia Pictures just last month tapped Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky (NBC's The Office) to write a second sequel.

"There's two fellows from The Office that are writing a script, but I've yet to see it," Murray said while promoting his upcoming family fantasy movie, City of Ember. "And I'm more involved with, you know, trying to get the dessert we ordered at lunch than I am with the new Ghostbusters sequel. But it's possible. It's a great idea that they hired these two guys to do it, because I think it'll be a ... it could be a fresh look at it. And it could be funny."

The original Ghostbusters was released in 1984 and is widely considered a comedy classic. The first sequel, Ghostbusters II, opened in 1989 and wasn't nearly as successful financially or critically. Murray recalled his disappointment with Ghostbusters II.

*****

"We did a sequel, and it was sort of rather unsatisfying for me, because the first one to me was the goods," Murray said. "It was the real thing. And the sequel, you know, was ... it was a few years later. There was an idea pitched. And it was like, well, they got us all together in a room. We just laughed for a couple of hours. And then they said, 'What if we did another one? Here's an idea.'"

They've got good writers: this could work. But only if the original cast is included. Well, at least Murray and Dan Ackroyd.

Here's a funny series of posters for the W movie starring Josh Brolin as President George W. Bush. The film is directed by Olive Stone. It will be in theatres on October 17th, 2008. It looks like an interesting take on the Bush administration but will many people watch what we are still living today? You can find the film's website here. The Talking Heads' hit song "Burning Down the House" plays while you are on the film's website.

The Outbreak is an online zombie movie that lets you make decisions. You decide what action the main character (you) should take. Make a mistake and you get eaten by zombies. The film contains some gore and violence as you might expect in a zombie movie. You can read more about the background behind this interesting online concept here, here and here.
