SNL Promos: Chris Rock Discusses Musical Guest Prince

Posted on November 1, 2014

Chris Rock is hosting Saturday Night Live tonight, but the buzz is all about Prince's promised, eight minute performance in the middle of the show. Chris knows that Prince is the big buzz of the night and did a series of very funny promos with Bobby Moynihan that are all about Prince.

Filmed on the streets of New York City, Chris announces the fact that Prince will be performing. Then the camera pans to Bobby in a purple hat, giving a shy look to the camera while a disclaimer on the screen says, "SNL acknowledges this is clearly not Prince."

Chris and Bobby reveal that they will be performing Prince songs during the show. Bobby is more of a "When Doves Cry" kind of guy, while Chris says he will take all the nasty songs. Chris also points out that every time Prince's name is mentioned a woman screams. Naturally, Bobby tries this out and it's true.

It's hard to believe it's been 30 years since the release of Purple Rain. Prince actually made his debut on SNL in February, 1981 when he jammed "Partyup." Prince released two new albums on September 30th -- that's just how he rolls. The albums, Art Official Age and Plectrumelectrum, both hit the top of the R&B charts. Prince will perform with his all female band 3rdeyegirl tonight.

Will he participate in any sketches? It's really hard to know. SNL had a hilarious series of sketches called "Prince Show" in which Fred Armisen played Prince as the host of his own talk show. Maya Rudolph played Beyonce, who was his co-host and spoke to people for him when he didn't feel like it. There was a lot of purple and surreal interviews which were hilarious. We do hope Prince Show will return tonight. Here are the promos:
