Rumor: Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie to Skip Oscars

Brad Pitt Angelina Jolie

E Online is reporting that Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt will not be attending this year's Academy Awards. Angelina Jolie will be missed on the red carpet.
As for why the couple, not seen together publicly since a December outing in New York, has suddenly caught a case of the camera-shies?

Jolie will be heading to Venice at the end of February to start production on The Tourist, a remake of a French thriller costarring Johnny Depp in which Jolie plays a vengeful Interpol agent.
The Oscars are being held on March 7th. Angelina Jolie shooting a film at the end of February is not a good excuse for missing the Oscars. There is no film that shoots during the Oscars. It's the Oscars. Plus, the film crew and cast would love it if Angelina attended and mentioned the movie. The news that they are not attending comes amidst rumors the hot Hollywood couple is splitting up.

Johnny Depp to Star With Angelina Jolie in The Tourist

There have been so many cast and director changes to the upcoming thriller The Tourist that it's been hard to keep track. But according to Variety, things are finally shaping up nicely with Angelina Jolie starring as the Interpol agent who must track down a former lover and Johnny Depp starring as an American who gets caught up in the intrigue. Johnny is still in talks, but his surprise involvement has thrown some real buzz behind the project.
The move comes after Avatar star Sam Worthington exited along with director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, both over creative differences. Already, directors are circling the plum gig, including Alfonso Cuaron.

*****

Spyglass initially set up the remake of the 2005 French thriller Anthony Zimmer with Bharat Nalluri directing Tom Cruise and Charlize Theron. Worthington came aboard with Theron after Cruise took Knight & Day at Fox. Von Donnersmarck then came into the picture with Jolie. Depp was brought into the mix by King, with whom he has a close relationship, most recently collaborating on The Rum Diary and the Gore Verbinski-directed animated pic Rango.
Johnny was supposed to make Pirates of the Caribbean 4 for Disney, but it looks like that may not be happening after all. Johnny was very unhappy when studio chief Dick Cook was forced out and since then his enthusiasm for another pirate move has waned, according to The L.A. Times.

Ridley Scott Wants Angela Jolie for Gucci Dynasty Movie

Ridley Scott is determined that Angelina Jolie play the lead in his upcoming film about the murder, mayhem and extravagant living of the Gucci family dynasty during the 70s and 80s. Angie would play Patrizia Gucci, who was sentenced to 29 years in jail for plotting the murder of her ex-husband, Maurizio Gucci.
The studio is about to hire a scribe to rewrite the drama that recaptures the glamorous days of the Gucci family dynasty in the 1970s and 80s, when the family was selling $500 million in product annually. Squabbles hobbled the clan until Maurizio, the grandson of founder Guccio Gucci, came out on top of a power struggle to run the family business. Just when he was about to reestablish the brand name by debuting a line designed by newcomer--and now film director--Tom Ford, Maurizio was gunned down in front of his Milan apartment in 1995.

There are still moving pieces in the package--the script is still being developed and Scott needs to lock down an actor to play Maurizio. The director has approached his Body of Lies star Leonardo DiCaprio, but he is not attached at this point.
Angelina Jolie and Leonardo DiCaprio: that's an interesting pairing. But it sounds like Leo hasn't signed on the dotted line. It's a juicy role, no question.

Angelina to Replace Tom Cruise in Spy Flick

Angelina Jolie is replacing Tom Cruise in the title role of the spy flick, Edwin A. Salt.
Once expected to star Tom Cruise, the Columbia Pictures espionage thriller will be redrafted by screenwriter Kurt Wimmer as a star vehicle for Angelina Jolie. Philip Noyce remains attached as director and Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Sunil Perkash are producing.

Jolie is close to a deal to play the title character, a CIA officer who's accused by a defector of being a Russian sleeper spy and must elude capture long enough to establish her innocence. Cruise had long flirted with the project, but that ended recently. The well-regarded script had several male movie stars circling. Jolie took a liking to it, prompting the studio's decision to rewrite it. Sources said the project won't require that much of an overhaul to suit her.

After Universal beefed up Jolie's role in "Wanted" and then marketed the action film squarely on Jolie's shoulders and watched it gross $132 million domestically, Jolie reestablished in the wake of "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" that she is the rare female who is viable in an action genre that has been almost the exclusive domain of men.
The deal hasn't closed yet, but it looks like it will. The film will be renamed, which is a good thing. It has a highly-regarded script, but the name was odd to begin with.

Is Angelina Jolie the Next Catwoman?

Julie Newmar CatwomanJulie Newmar, who played Catwoman in the Batman television series, says that Angelina Jolie wants to play Catwoman and is in talks to do so.
The 33-year-old actress - who gave birth to twins Knox and Vivienne earlier this month - is said to be in final negotiations with studio bosses to play the feline villain who first appeared in the Batman comics.

It is not clear whether she would play the role in the current Batman film series, starring Christian Bale as the caped crusader, or in a spin-off film as Halle Berry did in 2004's Catwoman.

Actress Julie Newmar, who played Catwoman in the Batman TV series from 1966 to 1967, has given her blessing for Jolie to play the part.

"Angelina would own the part," Newmar, now 74, said.

"My industry friends tell me she has already made enquiries about the role. I can understand how it would pique her interest. Catwoman is Batman's one true love.

"She is tremendously popular with women because she's both a heroine and a villainess."
We think Angelina Jolie would be a perfect Catwoman, especially if she gets to play against Christian Bale's Batman. Now that's what we call intense casting!

Update 7-31-08

By the way you can find Julie Newmar's website here. On her website she wrote a review of The Dark Knight. It seems she was a little bored at times by the film. Newmar writes, "Frankly, I yawned loudly and yearned for some deep comfort, which the seats at the Mann Theatre in Santa Monica were not."

Beowulf Slays Box Office Rivals

Screen shot from BeowulfBeowulf topped the box office this past weekend, in what was a lackluster performance for movies overall. The remaking of the epic poem took in $27,515,871, which will surely build based on the excellent reviews and breathtaking imagery. In second place was Bee Movie, which took in another $14,008,444, bringing its cumulative to date to $93,570,695. In third place was American Gangster which made $12,875,250. That brings its box office total to date to $100,650,615.

In fourth place was Fred Claus which made $11,914,323. In a dismal fifth place was Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium which elicited $9,630,085 in its opening weekend. Another dud that opened this past weekend was Love in the Time of Cholera, which made only $1,924,860. Even an Oprah assist couldn't save that one.

Angelina Jolie is Wanted

Angelina Jolie's calendar is filling up fast. She just adopted a Vietnamese orphan and is heading back to the States with him tomorrow. She also just signed on to play the lead in a new film, Wanted, which is an action film based on a graphic novel. Timur Bekmambetov is directing. Morgan Freeman and James McAvoy will also star in the film, which begins shooting in Eastern Europe in May.
McAvoy will play a young man who discovers his father is an assassin, only to learn shortly thereafter that his dad has been murdered. The youth is drafted to follow in his father's footsteps. Jolie will play an assassin who teaches the ropes to the wannabe killer.

Script was originated by Michael Brandt and Derek Haas, and Jolie took the role after a rewrite by Dean Georgaris ("Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life") to tailor the character for her. Marc Platt, Jim Lemley, Jason Netter and Iain Smith will produce.

Deal marks the second recent U commitment for Jolie, who'll star this fall for director Clint Eastwood in drama "The Changeling," to be produced by Imagine Entertainment partners Brian Grazer and Ron Howard and Malpaso's Rob Lorenz.
Angelina recently told a Vietnamese newspaper that she was going to be a stay at home mom for now, to help new son Pax Thien Jolie adjust to his new life. So, we guess the kid has about six weeks to get adjusted before he, mommy, and four nannies move to Eastern Europe for awhile. Sounds about right.

Angelina and Anderson Have A Chat

Photo of Anderson Cooper and Angelina JolieTonight Anderson Cooper inteviews Angelina Jolie on CNN's 360. In the interview, of which some snippets were released beforehand, we learn that the birth of Shiloh Nouvel was "terrifying" but that the doctors were "great." She also talks about World Refugee Day and quite a few other things.
Weeks after the birth of their first biological child, Hollywood stars Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are planning to adopt another. "Next we'll adopt," Jolie told CNN in an interview to be aired on Tuesday. "We don't know which -- which country. But we're looking at different countries. And we're -- I'm just-- it's gonna be the balance of what would be the best for Mad and for Z right now. It's, you know, another boy, another girl, which country, which race would fit best with the kids," she said, referring to her adopted children.

Jolie's adopted daughter Zahara, now about 15 months old, is from Ethiopia, and son Maddox, 4, is from Cambodia. The couple's younger daughter, Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt, was born on May 27 in Namibia in one of the most highly anticipated celebrity stories of the year. Jolie said she had given birth in Namibia because she loved Africa and had wanted to bring Zahara back to Africa. "My other daughter's African," she said in excerpts of an interview to be aired on CNN's program Anderson Cooper 360. "... And I wanted to take her back to Africa."

Jolie said she was frightened during the birth, which was by Caesarean section because the baby was in a breech position. Pitt was in the operating room for the delivery, she said. "And you know, because you're there for the birth, which I wasn't for my first two kids, you're just suddenly terrified that they're not gonna take a first breath," she said. "That was my whole focus. I just wanted to hear her cry. And I was sure everything would go right -- at the last minute, I became the mother that was sure everything was gonna go wrong. And she's healthy, and it was amazing."

The Oscar-winning actress, who said she gives a third of her income to refugees and other causes, is a goodwill ambassador for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees and the CNN interview will be aired on June 20, World Refugee Day. "I had a stupid income for what I do," she said. The money does make a difference and Jolie does see change. She said she feels "lucky" because she is able to visit the places that receive her money. "I can meet some people who say, 'God, we really need a well, or these cars are broken. Or we need something in the camp that's ... at school.' And I can go back a year later and see it built or see the cars."
Wow. She's already thinking about adoping another baby, just three weeks after having Shiloh Nouvel? We're definitely seeing some Mare Winningham tendencies going on here. And on another subject, she looks fabulous, doesn't she?
