Barbie Heads to the Big Screen

Barbie is ready for her close up. The 50 year old iconic doll will soon have her own feature film. This won't be another cartoon or direct to DVD deal. This will be a real live action movie with a decent budget.
"Barbie is the most famous doll in history, a unique cultural icon in the world of brands," said Universal Pictures chairman Marc Shmuger. "So many representations of Barbie frequent pop culture, but never before has she been brought to life in a motion picture. We're grateful to Mattel for entrusting us with this extraordinary opportunity."

Marc said the next step will be to canvas writers and decide a creative take for a family-friendly movie. Mark, who just produced Julie & Julia and is currently in production on the untitled James L. Brooks-directed comedy that stars Reese Witherspoon and Jack Nicholson, was one of several A-list producers who met with Mattel and U execs. Marc said he felt fortunate to get the job and said there is no shortage of plot possibilities, since Barbie has held more than 120 jobs over the years.

"Barbie may be the most popular girl in the world, and has always been a wonderfully aspirational figure, so we must do her proud," Marc said.
Universal wants a piece of the family-friendly pie and has decided that Barbie is the way to get it. It could work. But it will be tricky to get it right. For one thing, there is no actress alive today that has Barbie's measurements. If Barbie were a human, she would be 7' 2" tall, weigh 101 pounds, wear a size four dress and a size five shoe. She would have a 39" bust (FF cup), 19" waist, and 33" hips.

Jennifer Garner Inks Production Deal With ABC

Jennifer Garner is returning to ABC, but unfortunately for Alias fans she's not reprising her role as super spy Sydney Bristow. Instead, Jennifer has inked a production deal. Michael Ausiello reports:
Ex-Alias superstar Jennifer Garner has inked a fresh development deal with her old network, sources confirm to me exclusively. What are the specifics of the pact? And does it involve the words "Alias" and "movie"? Keep reading for all the deets...

ABC declined to comment, but I'm told the deal calls for the four-time Emmy nominee to develop projects via her Vandalia Films production shingle (that's tradespeak for "office space on studio lot"). There are no plans for Garner to act in any of said projects (apologies for the shameless Alias tease earlier), but as one Alphabet insider says, "If Jennifer wants to make a guest appearance no one is going to stop her."

The deal -- coming three years after Garner ended her five-season run as Sydney Bristow on Alias -- marks a big turning point for Garner's fledgling production company, which so far has dabbled mostly in independent film.
We don't understand this at all. We want to see Jennifer in front of the camera chasing bad guys. Still, kudos to her for landing the production deal.

Inglourious Basterds Will Compete at Cannes Film Festival

Quentin Tarantino and his World War II film Inglourious Basterds will compete the Cannes Film Festival this year.
The Brad Pitt starrer, set in Nazi-occupied France, has been invited to play in competition at the Cannes Film Festival. Insiders said Tarantino, a longtime favorite of the French, has accepted the offer and has told the film's backers -- the Weinstein Co. and Universal Pictures -- that the pic will be ready for its world premiere during the May fest.

The movie, which follows a band of Jewish-American soldiers whose mission is to take down a group of Nazis, will bow Aug. 21. Both the Weinstein Co. and U declined comment. Cannes organizers, who will announce the fest's lineup April 23, could not immediately be reached. Tarantino is no stranger to the Palais. The helmer became one of Hollywood's most in-demand directors after his "Pulp Fiction" won Cannes' Palme d'Or in 1994.
The 2008 festival runs May 13-24, 2009. Can Tarantino pull off another win? It's hard to say. Buzz about the unspellable film has been mixed.

Prince of Persia Release Delayed to 2010

Prince of Persia screenshotThe bigscreen and big budget version of the Ubisoft videogame Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is being pushed back to 2010 to allow more time to work on the cgi. Or to keep from competing with Transformers 2, depending on who you believe.
[T]he move takes "Prince of Persia" out of the path of "Transformers 2," which DreamWorks and Paramount open on June 26, 2009. Filmmaker Mike Newell began lensing the pic last week in Morocco and will remain there until the production moves to London.

Decision to delay the release by a year caught some by surprise, although the calendar could continue to see major reshufflings because of the ongoing labor strife in Hollywood. Studios may want to allow for extra cushion in case of any production delays.

Bruckheimer and Disney don't want to take any chances with "Prince of Persia," which they are hoping turns into a mega-franchise, along the lines of "Pirates of the Caribbean," that can feed the entire Disney empire, from sequels to potential TV or direct-to-DVD spinoffs, merchandise and Disney theme-park attractions.
Jake Gyllenhaal, Gemma Arterton, Ben Kingsley and Alfred Molina are starring in the film which will now open one week after Shrek Goes Fourth.

Venice Film Festival Announces Slate

The Venice Film Festival has announced its slate of films. Darren Aronofsky's The Wrestler, Jonathan Demme's Rachel Getting Married, Kathryn Bigelow's Hurt Locker, and Joel and Ethan Coen's Burn After Reading will all have their world premieres at the festival.
Similar to Cannes this year, the Lido's upcoming edition, which unspools Aug. 27-Sept. 6, is lighter on Yank pics, largely due to a dearth caused by the writers' strike. "One of the effects of the strike is that so many releases of movies that would have been right for Venice have been pushed by the studios to December, or even later," Marco Mueller said at a packed presser in Rome’s Excelsior Hotel on the Via Veneto.

"Very few (studios) were willing to run the risk of piracy by world premiering a movie so many months before its theatrical release," added the Venice topper, underlining that, with five U.S. pics vying for the Golden Lion, the U.S. presence at the Lido is still strong.
You can see the full list of films that are screening here.

The Trailer for Oliver Stone's Bush Movie Is Here

Here's the new trailer for Oliver Stone's film about George Bush, called W. Is this a joke? It looks like some kind of Saturday Night Live skit, only it's not funny. Surely he could have done better than this?

Hercules Returns to the Silver Screen

Hercules is coming back to the big screen, but the title role won't be filled by Kevin Sorbo the star of the popular television series.
"Hancock" director Peter Berg is spearheading a fresh take on Hercules for Universal. Berg will produce and will develop to direct "Hercules: The Thracian Wars," a co-production of Spyglass Entertainment, Berg's Film 44 and Radical Pictures. Spyglass and Universal will co-finance the film.

Ryan Condal will write the script, based on a five-issue comicbook series by Steve Moore that debuted in May through Radical Publishing. Spyglass' Jonathan Glickman, Roger Birnbaum and Gary Barber will produce with Berg and his Film 44 partner Sarah Aubrey, with Barry Levine producing for Radical. Jesse Berger will exec produce. Levine said the creative partners came together because Glickman, Berg and Aubrey wanted to develop a film that stayed true to the comicbook.

"What resonated for them was that this was character driven, about a character who's more man than god, with conflicts and redemption," Levine said.
Who will be the new Hercules? You can find information about some of the many actors who played Hercules in previous films here.

Jumper Lands on DVD

Photo of Jumper DVDBased on the bestselling novel by Stephen Gould, Jumper stars The film stars Hayden Christensen and Rachel Bilson. Christensen plays David Rice, a young man who discovers he has the power to teleport anywhere in the world just by thinking about it. At first his new power seems incredible -- he uses it to rob banks and vacation in exotic places -- but he eventually learns there is a price for his power.

David runs afoul of the Paladins, an ancient group that hunts Jumpers who they believe to be unnatural and an abomination. Now David has Roland Cox (Samuel L. Jackson), a senior Paladin, on his trail. As David races to find out more about his abilities and to evade Cox, he realizes that he will never live a normal life. His girlfriend, played by Rachel Bilson, is along for the ride. Diane Lane as Jack's mom is really underused -- we would have loved to have seen more of her backstory.

Jumper underperformed at the box office, but it's a perfect SF action film for summer. It's great fun and the action never stops. Yes, it's a bit disjointed, but the scenery is terrific -- and so is the CGI. The two disc special edition has all kinds of cool features, including deleted scenes, behind the scenes commentary and a digital version of the film. It's available everywhere DVDs are sold, and online at a nice discount from Amazon.com.

Guy Ritchie to Direct New Sherlock Holmes Movie

Guy Ritchie is slated to direct the upcoming Sherlock Holmes movie for Warner Brothers.
Ritchie's also working on a rewrite/polish of Tony Peckham's script, based on Wigram's upcoming comicbook "Sherlock Holmes." Studio's eying a 2010 release. The logline remains under wraps, but execs at Warners are aiming to reinvent Holmes and sidekick Dr. John H. Watson. Wigram's noted that the new Holmes would be more adventuresome and take advantage of his skills as a boxer and swordsman

Arthur Conan Doyle's stories about Holmes, written in the late 19th century, emphasized the detective's intellectual brilliance and power of deductive reasoning. The pipe-smoking character has been portrayed in more than 200 film and TV shows. Lin and Wigram are both former Warner creative execs who have first-look deals at the studio. Wigram worked on the "Harry Potter" pics while at Warner while Lin worked on "The Aviator" and "The Departed." Ritchie is directing "RocknRolla," for which he also wrote the screenplay, for Joel Silver's Dark Castle Entertainment. Pic will be distribbed by Warner Bros.
A new, swashbuckling Sherlock Holmes? That could work. But they'll need a great lead to pull it off.

Get Ready for sn Avalanche of Sequels

Den of Geek rounds up the thirty (!) sequels that are being planned by Hollywood. We knew that there seemed to be a lot of sequels around, but his list really puts it into perspective. It's like original moviemaking stopped when the 80s ended or something.
The Brazilian Job: the follow up to Paramount's US remake of The Italian Job is still on the cards, and it's got a 2009 release date marked. Jason Statham, Mos Def, Mark Wahlberg and Charlize Theron are attached, as is director F Gary Gray.

I, Robot 2: All we know on this one is that it's in the scripting stages still, with a potential 2010 release date planned in. No news on Mr Smith's involvement.

I Am Legend 2: Warner's huge Christmas 2007 hit could also have a follow up, although it'd be interesting to see if Will Smith returned to it. A 2010 release date is also being mooted for this one.

Beverly Hills Cop 4: If Die Hard can still do it at the box office, why can’t Axel Foley? Er, because the third BHC movie was crap, and a flop. Still, it's not stopped development work going ahead on number four. No further news than that, though.

National Treasure 3: Not a huge surprise, but as the Nic Cage Indiana Jones knock off franchise has proved to be quite a juggernaut, you’ll only have to wait until 2011 for the third film in the series.

Cars 2: We spotted this on AintItCool – is Pixar really looking to make a sequel to its weakest film? Apparently so…

Toy Story 3: This one, after lots of umming and ahhing, appears to be a goer. It won't, as was speculated, be a straight-to-DVD affair, and Tom Hanks and Tim Allen are both expected back on voicing duties. It’ll be out in 2010.

Jeepers Creepers 3: MGM is running the rule over a potential third instalment in the horror franchise, with director Victor Salva still attached. Hmmm.

Shrek 5: The fourth film was a no-brainer after the tepid third outing made so much cash. But a fifth instalment has also been confirmed. No wonder Shrek is the same colour as an American dollar…

Night at the Museum 2: Ben Stiller is returning for his most commercially successful role outside of the Meet the Parents franchise. We can wait. No news on the proposed Meet The Little Focker, though
See the entire list here. One sequel we're ready for right now is Indiana Jones 5; George Lucas was so happy with the reception of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull that he's hinting at more films. But if it takes him and Spielberg another ten years to do it, it's just not going to work.

Audiences Staying Away From Topical Films

Variety reports that audiences are growing quite tired of topical films, such as those that cover hot-button political issues and the Iraq War.
Filmmakers, mindful that it took more than a decade for Hollywood to effectively tackle the Vietnam War onscreen, were eager to embrace the topicality of Iraq while it was still hot. And both indies and studio speciality divisions jumped in headfirst. In retrospect, it's easy to see why they failed, and why the next round -- yes, there are more on the way -- faces an uphill battle.

First, what was timely at one stage of the Iraq War became more painful as the conflict wore on. The American public grew weary of a 24/7 news cycle that bombarded them with unpleasant war news, so dramas and docs that revealed the war's dark side -- soldiers misbehaving or wounded or victimized -- became most unwelcome.

"People want something cheering and uplifting right now," says press agent Fredell Pogodin. "The economy's bad, and whenever you turn on the news and see this stuff, you feel helpless. People don't know what to make of this situation, and seeing a film about it throws it right back in your face."

Then, a self-perpetuating group-think among the media virtually doomed any movie that was stamped with the toxic Iraq label. As hard as marketers tried to duck and cover, audiences stayed away in droves from one movie after another, from Michael Winterbottom's "A Mighty Heart" to Peter Berg's $70 million Saudi Arabian FBI thriller "The Kingdom."
We enjoyed The Kingdom, although the last scene needed a bigtime edit. But hey, it was Jennifer Garner and Jamie Foxx in an action thriller so that's always good. We think it's too soon to start doing movies about the Iraq War. It's still going on: if we want to read stories about it all we have to do is pick up a newspaper or watch television. It's just too early for all that. We think it's still to early for 9/11 movies: we saw it happen live on TV, after all.

Nicole Kidman and Judi Dench to Star in Nine

Nicole Kidman and Judi Dench are reportedly starring in Nine, the film adaptation of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical.
The Oscar-winning pair are in talks to join Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz, Marion Cotillard and Sophia Loren in Rob Marshall's adaptation of the Tony-winning Broadway musical. The 1982 show, itself an adaptation of Federico Fellini's autobiographical opus "8 1/2," revolves around a film director (Bardem) juggling the demands of several women in his life.

*****

Plenty of people are familiar with Kidman's singing and dancing chops from "Moulin Rouge," but far fewer are aware of Dench's extensive musical theater experience. She played Sally Bowles in the original London production of "Cabaret" in 1968, and won the 1995 Olivier Award for best actress in a musical in a revival of Stephen Sondheim's "A Little Night Music."
The film will begin shooting after Nicole gives birth this summer and has a bit of maternity leave. And as for Judi Dench -- we had no idea that she was the original Sally Bowles. What fun that would have been to see!

Jennifer Aniston Forms New Production Company

Jennifer Aniston has formed her own production company called Echo Films. She's partnering with her producing parter Kristin Hahn.
The studio has just acquired screen rights to Jane Fallon's British bestseller "Getting Rid of Matthew," and Aniston and Hahn will produce with Lynda Obst and Marc Rosen. Fallon, a veteran U.K. TV producer who is married to Ricky Gervais, will adapt her novel about a hard-charging publicist whose lusty affair with a married man is ruined by his decision to leave his wife and two children for her. She invents a new persona, befriends the spurned wife and attempts to patch up the marriage up so she can be rid of him. In the process, she develops a thing for his oldest son.

Universal and Echo also have tapped the book market to acquire "The Divorce Party," a Laura Dave novel that Viking will publish in May, with Gwyn Lurie ("The Man Who Ate the 747") aboard to write the script. As a husband and wife reach their 35th wedding anniversary, they hold a party to announce their divorce. It creates complications for their son, who returns home with his commitment-shy fiancee.

*****

Echo's emphasis will be on producing grounded, relatable material, the partners say. "We particularly like working from books and real-life stories about distinct characters that embody something relatable and relevant about human nature's double-sided coin of vulnerability and mettle," Hahn said.

That theme prompted the company's name, Aniston said. "We're drawn to stories about people finding their voice and finding their way because they help us as listeners and viewers do what we feel we're all trying to do, which is making sense of our lives through the stories of others," Aniston said. "That's why we chose the name Echo, to echo back an idea, a challenge, something that resonates through all of us."
It's a good move for Aniston. She's worked with Hahn since she was a partner with then-husband Brad Pitt and Brad Grey in Plan B Productions. The company sounds like it has some interesting projects lined up, most of which are tailor-made for Jennifer to star in.
