Halcyon Putting Terminator Rights Up For Auction

Halcyon is putting the Terminator franchise on the auction block. Variety reports that the bankruptcy court will have an auction in January to sell off the rights to future Terminator movies, television series, DVDs and merchandise.
An exec with FTI Capital Advisers, retained by Halcyon, issued a bullish outlook Monday, saying there's been strong interest building since the investment bankers began sending out materials last week to prospective buyers. "This is a unique asset -- the only Hollywood tentpole asset that's not owned by a studio," said Kevin Shultz, senior managing director of FTI Capital Advisers.

"Terminator Salvation," the fourth film in the franchise, carried a production pricetag of about $200 million and took in $371 million worldwide. Shultz noted that the recent $60 million purchase of rights to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise by Nickelodeon should provide a useful comparison to potential buyers.
It seems quite likely that there will be a next Terminator movie; how that sorts out depends entirely on who buys the rights.

Terminator Salvation Producers in Apocalyptic Legal Battle

Terminator SalvationOne of the producers of Terminator: Salvation movie, Moritz Borman, is suing two other producers, Derek Anderson and Victor Kubicek and their company Halcyon Co., for fraud and breach of contract for failing to pay Borman the agreed upon fees for obtaining the rights to the Terminator franchise. Borman wants $160 million in damages.
Borman alleged he had arranged for the transfer of the "Terminator" rights to Anderson and Kubiceck but would not have done so had he known of the pair's "shady" background or that the duo had been sued previously for "swindling" other motion picture investors. "Notwithstanding the fact that defendants obtained the substantial franchise rights and assets through Borman, Anderson and Kubicek failed to honor their assurances, representations and contractual obligations to Borman," the suit said. "Defendants' egregious fraud, bad faith conduct and refusal to abide by their contracts has led to the filing of this lawsuit."

*****

The duo founded the Halcyon Co. in 2006 with funding from Wall Street hedge funds and private investors. The company obtained rights to the "Terminator" franchise from Carolco's Andy Vajna and Mario Kassar for an undisclosed sum as that company was closing down in May 2007. Borman's suit alleged that he had helped secure initial financing for "Terminator: Salvation" through investment fund Pacificor LLC and that his deal called for approval rights on the picture and all creative decisions along with a $5 million producing fee and "significant" back-end compensation.

Borman alleges that Anderson and Kubicek "hijacked" the production last July as principal photography was being completed and refused to pay him the $2.5 million balance of his producing fee. "Soon after, it also came to light that Anderson and Kubicek did not have the means to finance the picture, had defaulted on numerous loans and owed over $1 million to creditors on the picture," the suit added.
What a mess. Those are some pretty harsh allegations; it will be interesting to see what evidence Moritz has up his sleeve. No doubt some kind of countersuit will be following. Terminator: Salvation is being directed by McG and stars grumpy star Christian Bale. The film is set for a 2010 release, but a lawsuit could certainly slow things down if the litigation gets ugly.

Knight Rider and Sarah Connor Given Full Season Pickups

Knight Rider has been given a full-season pickup.
NBC's critically maligned reboot of the '80s campfest has nabbed a full-season pickup, sources confirm to me exclusively. Producers were informed this evening that the Peacock was ordering the show's "back nine."

Despite middling ratings, KR has remained competitive in its Wednesday 8 p.m. time slot, particularly among young men who like bad TV.
We are mystified as to why in the world NBC would order more episodes of this show. It's awful. Other than Val Kilmer as the car: he's great. In more understandable news, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles has also been given a full-season pickup. That is one of our favorite shows: it has great acting, great action and excellent writing.

Terminator Returns Tonight

Photo of Summe Glau on Terminator Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles returns to television tonight at 9:00 p.m. Eastern/8:00 p.m. Central time on Fox. Brian Austin Green guest stars in tonight's episode, which is entitled "Queen's Gambit."

Andy (Brendan Hines) submits his computer into a chess competition. During the match, Sarah (Lena Headey) meets up with a stranger (Brian Austin Green) who has a similar background. John (Thomas Dekker) makes new friends at school while Cameron (Summer Glau) gets a counseling session. Meanwhile, Agent Ellison (Richard T. Jones) finds remnants of a "Terminator Battle," and tries to figure out what it all means.

We're so happy that the writers' strike is basically over. Now we can figure out when the shows we like are on, because the scheduling has been just awful the past three months.

The Sarah Connor Chronicles Starts Tonight

Sarah Connor ChroniclesThe Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles debuts on Fox tonight and tomorrow night in a two part premiere. Each part is one hour long. The series takes place after the events in the Terminator 2: Judgment Day movie. Sarah Connor and her 15-year-old son John Connor are trying to avoid the FBI while they try to destroy the Skynet computer network and prevent Armageddon.
Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles reveals what happens when Sarah (Lena Headey) stops running and goes on the offensive against an ever-evolving technological enemy bent on destroying her life, and perhaps the world. Her son, 15-year-old John Connor (Thomas Dekker), knows that he may be the future savior of mankind, but is not yet ready to take on the mantle of leadership that he's told is his destiny. John finds himself inextricably drawn to Cameron (Summer Glau), an enigmatic and otherworldly student at his high school, who soon proves to be much more than his confidante - she assumes the role of Sarah and John's fearless protector. On their trail are not only threats from the future, but an intelligent and tough FBI agent, James Ellison (Richard T.Jones), who soon becomes a powerful ally.
Fox has put together an ambitious website to promote the show here. They might as well since they are running out of original content to show viewers thanks to the ongoing writer's strike.
