The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies Tops Box Office for Third Straight Weekend

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies continues to dominate the box office. It was the number one film in theaters this weekend for the third consecutive weekend. The final film in the series added $21.9 million to bring its total domestic gross to over $220 million.

Five Armies was followed by Into the Woods, a star-studded fairy-tale inspired film. The film added $19 million to bring its gross to over $90 million after just two weekend. Unbroken has been running just behind Into the Woods. It came in third during its second weekend in theaters and made $18.3 million.

The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death opened in fourth place and made $15 million. This was less than the $20.8 million the original horror film made during its opening weekend in February 2012. Daniel Radcliffe starred in the original but does not appear in Woman in Black 2.

Woman in Black 2 was followed by Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, Annie, The Imitation Game and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1. Mockingjay added $7.7 million to bring its total gross to $323.8 million. It is now just nine million shy of passing Guardians of the Galaxy to become the top grossing film of 2014. It should not have any trouble making $9 million more and eclipsing Guardians.
