$500,000 Shrimp on a Treadmill Study Dubbed Wasteful Spending by Senator Coburn

A study of a shrimp on treadmill is the focus of a wasteful spending attack by Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK). ABC News says the shrimp on a treadmill study cost $500,000. Coburn's 73-page report about the NRF's spending also focused on a towel folding robot and a Jell-O wrestling event.

Jeanne Moos reports for CNN that the shrimp on the treadmill viraled around the Internet and was put to music like "Eye of the Tiger." Coburn may be unaware that a crab also tried out the treadmill (second video below), so the $500,000 study was not limited to just a single sea creature. The sea creature stress tests do look absurd, but the scientists behind them argue they are a way to stress the animals to see how they perform in different conditions, such as a polluted environment.
