The horror film The Purge starring Lena Heady and Ethan Hawke made nearly $90 million worldwide on a budget of $3 million. That led to The Purge: Anarchy, which made approximately $112 million on a budget of only $9 million. And that is why we have The Purge: Election Year. The premise of the films is that in the U.S., for twelve hours on one day each year all crime is legal. Anything goes -- it's pretty much anarchy. If you're rich you just hole up until its over. For the poor, it's a nightmare.
Senator Charlene Roan, played by Lost's Elizabeth Mitchell, is running on a platform to end the Purge and its horrors. Her entire family was murdered fifteen years during a Purge and she despises the event. She is doing well in the polls, but there are those who don't want the Purge to end. On the night that should be the very last Purge, she gets betrayed and suddenly the senator and her head of security Sergeant Leo Barnes (Frank Grillo, back again for more fun) are on the run on the most violent and depraved night of the year.
The film also stars Mykelti Williamson, Ethan Phillips, Edwin Hodge, London Hall and Lisa colon-Zayas. The film was written and directed by James DeMonaco. It will be released on July 1, 2016. Take a look:
