Matt Damon Battles a Monster in Teaser for Yimou Zhang's The Great Wall

Legendary Pictures, the studio behind The Dark Knight trilogy and Godzilla, has released the first teaser trailer for The Great Wall and it looks simply amazing. The film was directed by brilliant Chinese director Yimou Zhang (Hero, House of Flying Daggers, Curse of the Golden Flower). The fantasy film focuses on the building of the Great Wall of China, which took 1700 years to complete. That much is known from the history books. But did you know they built the wall to keep out actual monsters?

Yes, there was a really good reason to build that wall and it appears that it had nothing to do with keeping out northern invaders. It was all about the marauding dragons. Or demons. Or something terrifying (Maybe Godzilla's long lost cousin?). The film stars Matt Damon, Tian Jing, Eddie Peng, Lu Han, Willem Dafoe, Pedro Pascal and Kenny Lin. We don't know anything more about the plot, but we love the idea that the Great Wall actually was built to keep out something horrible -- sort of like the wall in Game of Thrones which was built to keep out the White Walkers.

So, we've got Matt Damon and Pedro Pascal, who played the memorable Prince Oberyn in Game of Thrones, teaming up with the Chinese to fight off something terrible. The film is set during the prosperous and enlightened Northern Song Dynasty. Perhaps the two Europeans are getting tips to take back to their countries to repel their own monsters? In any event, we can't wait to see what Yimou Zhang comes up with. Take a look:
