Here is the first trailer for the highly anticipated film adaption of William Shakespeare's Macbeth starring Michael Fassbender as Macbeth and Marion Cotillard as Lady Macbeth.

Fassbender may nab an Oscar for his compelling portrayal of the Scottish duke Macbeth who is told he will be King of Scotland by a trio of witches. Urged on by his incredibly ambitious wife, Lady Macbeth, he murders the king and takes the throne for himself. The violent, bloody story was directed by Justin Kurzel (Snowtown). Kurzel has a dark take on the material and the battle scenes are incredible. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival to excellent reviews, with reviewers praising Kurzel's slant on the play, which spends more time in battle and less time inside dark Scottish castles.

The role of Lady Macbeth was supposed to be played by Natalie Portaman, but eventually Marion Cotillard was cast. The two time Oscar winner is compelling as the scheming power behind the throne. The supporting cast includes David Thewlis as Duncan, Sean Harris as Macduff, Elizabeth Debicki as Lady Macduff, Jack Reynor as Malcolm and Paddy Considine as Banquo. Lynn Kennedy and Seylan Baxter play the witches who utter some of the most famous lines in history.

The film is set to be released in the UK in October. The Weinstein Company will release the film in the U.S. in November, in time for Oscar consideration. Take a look:
