SNL: JJ Abrams Reveals Star Wars Screen Tests
Posted on November 22, 2015
One of the best sketches on Saturday Night Live last night featured Star Wars: The Force Awarkens director J.J. Abrams talking about the screen tests they did to cast the film. Apparently some very big celebrities wanted in on the film. Who knew Sofia Vergara and Danny DeVito wanted in on the action?
Javier Bardem (Beck Bennett) had his own ideas about how he should use a light saber and none of them were G-rated. Actual cast members Daisy Ridley, who plays Rey, and John Boyega, who plays Finn, also participated in the sketch. Daisy found herself doing a chemistry test with Sofia Vergara (Cecily Strong), John Mayer (Jon Rudnitsky) and Michael Buble who sang "Making Wookie" to her. John Boyega, using his actual British accent, began to laugh as he read the script exclaiming, “A black stormtrooper! Yeah, right!" Then he flipped a couple more pages and discovers that yes, there really is a black stormtrooper in the film.
Emma Stone was dressed as Rey told the camera, "I know that the Star Wars universe is very diverse, and I don’t know if you saw the movie Aloha, but I can play a very convincing part- Asian woman." Director Cameron Crowe got blasted for putting Emma in the role, even though in the book the whole point of the character is that she looks white, but goes around proclaiming that she is part Hawaiian.
Jon Hamm appeared in full Han Solo costume noting that he wrote his own script. He announced he was auditioning to play the iconic role Hamm Solo. Bobby Moynihan nailed his impersonation of George Lucas who kept trying to use the Force to force someone to get him a Coke Zero.
David Beckham (Taran Killam) totally misunderstood what he was supposed to be doing with poor BB-8 and announced "I'm going to bend it!" before kicking poor BB-8 right into pieces. But it was Leslie Jones that really nailed her lines. Unfortunately she in full costume as a Klingon and the lines were about having to enter the Romulan Neutral Zone with shields only at 12%. She was not happy when J.J. explained that this was Star Wars, not Star Trek. It's hilarious: take a look:
