Trailer for Rudderless Starring Billy Crudup, Anton Yelchin and Selena Gomez

William H. Macy makes his directorial debut with Rudderless, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. Billy Crudup plays a successful advertising executive named Sam whose life is nearly destroyed when his son is suddenly killed.

Sam retreats from life, living off the grid on his sailboat while he drinks most of his days away. When he discovers a cache of his son's lyrics and demo tapes, he plunges into the music to try to keep a connection with the son he lost. Surprised by how talented his son was, he determines to learn all of the music and be brave enough to perform one song at a local hangout. He meets Quentin (Anton Yelchin), a young man in the audience who is a musician. The two end up forming a rock band that changes both their lives.

Selena Gomez plays Kate, the son's grieving girlfriend. Felicity Huffman plays Sam's ex-wife, who gives him their son's box of lyrics and demo tapes. Laurence Fishburne co-stars as a music shop owner who is interested in the band. The original songs in the film were written by Simon Steadman and Charlton Pettus, who perform as the group SolidState.

The film debuted out of competition at Sundance, and has excellent buzz. Anton Yelchin is such a talented young actor: he really is different in every role. Selena's movie career seems to be moving forward just fine. The film will be released in theaters and on demand on October 17, 2014. Take a look:
