Surfer Fends Off Shark Attack During Surfing Competition

Australian surfer Mick Fanning is feeling very lucky after surviving a shark attack. The attack occurred during a surfing competition in South Africa.

Video shows a shark coming at Fanning while he is waiting to catch a wave. To fend off the shark Fanning starts moving his board rapidly and punching at the shark. CNN reports that the only damaged was a severed leash on Fanning's surfboard.

Fanning told World Surf League TV, "I had this feeling that something was behind (me), and all of a sudden I felt like I started getting pulled underwater. And then the thing came up and I was on my board and it was right there."
