Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Tops The Purge to Win Weekend Box Office

Posted on July 22, 2014

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes held the box office this weekend. It made $36 million to win the box office for the second straight weekend. The film has now grossed $138 million in the U.S. after just two weekends. The streak will likely end at two for the third Planet of the Apes film as Dwayne Johnson's Hercules arrives next weekend.

The horror sequel, The Purge: Anarchy, opened in second and made $28 million. The strong debut was less than the original, The Purge, which made $34 million in its opening, but it is certainly good enough for fans to expect a third Purge. Horror franchises can sometime run for five or more films before fans tire of them.

Disney's Planes: Fire & Rescue opened in third and made $18 million. This was lower than expectations. The new Jason Segal and Cameron Diaz comedy also had a mediocre opening. It made $15 million in 3,062 theaters.

Transformers: Age of Extinction made $10 million during its fourth weekend in theaters and finished fifth. It has now made $227 million and still stands a strong chance of Captain America: The Winter Solider for the top grossing film of the year. It needs another $32 million past The Winter Soldier's $258.9 million gross.

Transformers was followed by Tammy, 22 Jump Street, How to Train Your Dragon 2 and Maleficent. 22 Jump Street is looking very impressive now with a total gross of over $180 million for an R-rated film. You can view the box office chart here.
