Fifty Shades of Grey Tops Box Office for Second Consecutive Weekend

Fifty Shades of Grey has topped the box office for the second consecutive weekend. However, the film's box office earning tumbled 72.7% from the week before. Fifty Shades made $23.2 million to bring its total after two weekends to $130 million. Most of those who wanted to see the film probably did so during the first weekend. The film's C+ CinemaScore means that some moviegoers may not be encouraging their friends to see it.

Kingsman: The Secret Service added $17 million during its second weekend in theaters. It has now made $67 million after two weekends. Kingsman was followed by The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water which made $15.5 million during its third weekend in theaters.

The week's opening films did not turn out large audiences. McFarland, USA and The DUFF had modest openings. McFarland made $11.3 million with a $4,107 per theater average and The DUFF opened with $11 million on a $4,282 per theater average. McFarland USA had a strong A CinemaScore so it may hang on a little next weekend.

The DUFF was followed by American Sniper which continues to do well in theaters after 9 weeks. It has now made $319 million. The other opening film this weekend, Hot Tub Time Machine 2, had a weak opening of $5.8 million. We think it will do better with rentals.

Hot Tub 2 was followed by Jupiter Ascending, The Imitation Game and Paddington. Next weekend we will see if any films can get an Oscar bump. You can view the box office chart for the weekend here.
