A Dark Knight Has a New Lightsaber in First Star Wars Teaser Trailer

Posted on November 28, 2014

The first teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens has landed and it looks pretty awesome. There's not a lot given away here, but it's still just so exciting to hear that music and get a peek inside that world once again.

The teaser opens on a desert landscape that looks like Tatooine. A man's voice speaks saying, "There has been an awakening. Have you felt it?" It really sounds like Benedict Cumberbatch, but surely it can't be him? If it's not him, then someone really is doing a very nice Cumberbatch with a side of Smaug. We then get a shot of a Stormtrooper with his helmet off. He looks really scared, so clearly something's coming. A droid rolls across the sand on a kind of beach ball shaped roller which makes for a great, fun visual.

A platoon of Stormtroopers is in some kind of assault vehicle, getting ready to attack something. A female human rides across the sand, clearly off to warn someone or to escape. Then we see X-wing fighters flying across the sand, preparing to meet some kind of force.

In the next scene we see a dark, robed figure in the woods carrying a red light saber with a crossguard. Well, that's new. Our friend the announcer intones, "The dark side...and the light." Then the Millennium Falcon appears and it's a great day for Star Wars fans. Just to see the Falcon swooping through the sky is a joy.

The film hits theaters in December, 2015, when we can finally see what J.J. Abrams has done with George Lucas' world. We have very high hopes. Take a look:
