First Trailer for Christopher Guest's Mockumentary Mascots

Posted on September 2, 2016

He is responsible for such classic mockumentaries as This is Spinal Tap and Best in Show, which took a close look at the Westminster Dog Show. Now Christopher Guest is back and he's taking us behind the scenes of the world of mascots. You know, the people that dress up as characters for sporting events.

The film is framed around the World Mascot Association Championships where mascots compete to win the "Golden Fluffy." Audiences were probably more familiar with the tropes of the heavy metal rock world so brilliantly satirized in Spinal Tap. But the world of professional mascots is fascinatingly odd.

The cast is outstanding: Silicon Valley's Zach Woods opens the trailer with a soliloquy about mascotting and marriage. Parker Posey shares her thoughts about being Alvin the Armadillo. Ed Begley, Jr. lets us know that of all the mascots playing a donkey, he is the only one who had the "first anatomically correct costume." Jennifer Coolidge, Fred Willard and Jane Lynch are also along for the ride. Naturally, Jane seems to get some of the best lines as a snarky judge.

The film will premiere on Netflix on October 13, 2016. Take a look:
