Gemma Arterton and Sennia Nanua Star in the First Trailer for The Girl With All The Gifts

The first trailer for Colm McCarthy's The Girl With All The Gifts is out. The film is an adaptation of the dystopian novel by M.R. Carey. In the future, most of humanity has been killed by a fungal infection that pretty much turns everyone into zombies. They love to eat human flesh and have no higher brain function. The humans that are uninfected have barricaded themselves in an army base where they frantically search for a cure.

There are a number of children at the base who have been infected with the disease, but retain their higher brain function. The adults teach them and study their blood to try to find a cure, but they must restrain the children. If they get too close to uninfected humans they go beserk and try to eat them.

One child named Melanie (Sennia Nanua) is highly intelligent and loves her teacher Miss Helen Justineau (Gemma Arterton). Tehy are guarded by Sergeant Eddie Parks (Paddy Considine), who is concerned that Miss Justineau is too fond of Melanie and that disaster will occur. One day the base is attacked by full on zombies (called Hungries) in the novel. Melanie saves Miss Justineau from the Hungries. They, Sergeant Parks and the scientist Dr. Caroline Caldwell (Glenn Close) escape across the rural countryside to find a safe haven.

Mike Carey adapted his own novel into the screenplay. It looks as if the set up and the main characters are the same as the novel. Having Glenn Close play the cold-blooded Dr. Caldwell, who does not see the children as human, was a brilliant stroke. And Sennia Nanua is mesmerizing as Melanie. Take a look:
