Russell Brand, Hellen Mirren in Arthur Remake

Arthur 1981

Variety reports that Hellen Mirren will star in a remake of Arthur. Russell Brand will play Arthur. Hellen Mirren will play the valet Hobson, who was played by actor John Gielgud in the 1981 film.
Jason Winer, who directed the pilot of ABC's "Modern Family," will helm "Arthur," produced by Larry Brezner, Chris Bender and Kevin McCormick. Brand, Scott Kroopf, J.C. Spink and Nick Linnen are exec producing.

In the original, Dudley Moore's Arthur turned to Gilgud's Hobson for advice after his family threatened to cut off his inheritance if he did not marry a woman he didn't love. Gielgud won the supporting actor Oscar for his work.
A release date for the remake has not yet been set. An IMDB page for the film, which contains little details so far, has the film being released in 2011.

Anna Faris to Star in Private Benjamin Remake

Anna Faris House Bunny

Hollywood Reporter breaks the news that Anna Faris is slated to star in a remake of Private Benjamin. The contemporary take on the plot will most likely be written by Amy Talkington and produced by Mark Gordon. Anna Faris was hilarious in The House Bunny and she seems perfect for the role. However, getting the plot of the comedy right will be complicated by the current wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Brian Gatewood and Alessandro Tanaka to Write Baywatch Screenplay

Baywatch TV Cast

The Hollywood Reporter says a Baywatch movie is slated for a summer 2011 release. The Hollywood Reporter also says screenwriters Brian Gatewood and Alessandro Tanaka have been hired to write the screenplay.
The Break-Up co-writer Jeremy Garelick was brought on to rewrite and direct in July. The hiring of Gatewood and Tanaka further points to a largely comedic take on the property, since the pair has their original comedy The Sitter set up at Fox with David Gordon Green directing and Jonah Hill starring.

Additionally, insiders place the Baywatch adaptation in the context of a TV revamp like Charlie's Angels rather than Starsky and Hutch, which indicates that female-driven action is also on the menu.
The original creators of the show are producers of the upcoming film. It doesn't sound real exciting right now but it could get more interesting once we find out who they decide to cast for the Baywatch movie. We do know that Pamela Anderson is expected to make a cameo in the film.

Gilligan's Island Motion Picture in the Works

Gilligans Island

Variety reports that the the 1960s tv series, Gilligan's Island, is headed to the big screen thanks to Warner Bros. and Atlas Entertainment. Variety says Charles Roven and Richard Suckle will produce and Brad Copeland will write the screenplay. The plan is for a contemporary spin on the tale.

Characters have not been cast but the Variety story says Michael Cera was an early though for the Gilligan role. He does seem like a Gilligan. Arts Beat has a few good ideas, such as Zooey Deschanel as Mary Ann Summers and Christina Hendricks as Ginger Grant.

NBC's Chuck May Make Early Return

Chuck and Sarah

Michael Ausiello reports that Chuck may make an early return to NBC. The hit show may return as early as late October.
“How much sooner” you ask?

As early as late October, my moles tell me. And while it remains unclear whether the little show that could (and has and shall again) would return to its Monday timeslot or find itself a new perch, NBC insiders who’ve seen the first four episodes are calling this season the best yet.
Michael Ausiello says an early return makes it more likely that Chuck will get additional episodes beyond the 13 NBC initially commissioned. We love Chuck so the show returning early with a good chance of more episodes sounds good to us. We just hope they don't put it up against one of our other favorite shows as the networks so often like to do.

Vacation Sequel in the Works

Vacation 1983The Hollywood Reporter writes that a sequel to the 1983 Vacation film that starred Chevy Chase as Clark Griswold is in the works. This film would have the son, Rusty Griswold, as a grownup with his own children setting out on a family vacation.
New Line is meeting with writers to pen the script, but the take is already developed: The story focuses on Rusty Griswold, the son of Clark Griswold, the protagonist of the initial movies and portrayed by Chevy Chase. Rusty, now a father himself, takes his family on a road trip vacation.

The characters would acknowledge that first trip, making the movie more of a sequel than a reboot. Chase and Beverly D'Angelo, who played the mom in the original movies, will have room to make appearances as grandparents, providing a sense of continuity, though no deals are in place.
David Dobkin - who directed and produced Wedding Crashers - is attached to possibly produce and direct the Vacation sequel.

Inglourious Basterds Opens Big in Europe

Quentin Tarantino's new World War II film, Inglourious Basterds, starring Brad Pitt and Diane Kruger, is getting rave reviews and excellent box office in its European openings. German critics especially loved film, saying it was a paradigm shift for World War II movies. European audiences are liking what they see.
"Inglourious Basterds" is off to a good start in Europe, scoring the best opening day ever in France for a Quentin Tarantino pic with a Wednesday gross of $1.4 million from 499 playdates.

Universal Pictures Intl. also opened the film in Belgium and French-speaking Switzerland to best-ever numbers for Tarantino. Pic also finished No. 1 in Australia, where it opened Thursday, grossing $490,000 from 201.

"Basterds," about a tough band of soldiers who slip into Germany to battle Nazis, kicks into high gear Friday, when it opens in 3,165 theaters domestically. The Weinstein Co., U's partner on the film, is domestic distrib. Overseas, the pic rolls out into a total of 2,620 playdates in 22 territories, including the U.K. and Germany.
Nikki Finke reports that the film made $800,000 in Germany in its opening and is looking like a record breaker for Tarantino film openings.
It opened last night (Wednesday) in three territories -- Belgium, France, French-Switzerland -- and scored the highest Tarantino opening ever in those three markets. "The results are great. We opened No. 1 in all three markets and grossed: Belgium $143K at 63 locations, biggest Tarantino opening day; France $1.4M at 499 locations, biggest Tarantino opening day; French-Switzerland $61k at 24 locations, biggest Tarantino opening day," an insider tells me.
So, what will American audiences think about the revenge fantasy? We'll find out soon enough: Inglourious Basterds opens tomorrow in the U.S.

Jennifer Aniston Signs on For Pumas

Jennifer AnistonVariety reports that Jennifer Aniston has signed on for a comedy film called Pumas that features two thirty-something women that pursue younger men. Wayne McClammy will direct the film and Melissa Stack will write the screenplay.
Thesp will also produce along with Jon Gordon, Scott Z. Burns and Kristin Hahn. Chris Moore and Barry Littman are exec producing.

Aniston's starring in Sony's "Bounty Hunter," which has been shooting, and recently wrapped indie comedy "The Baster" opposite Jason Bateman. She's an exec producer on Screen Gems drama "Holler."

McClammy's attached to direct "Cool School" for Fox and "Le Car" for MGM from a comedy spec he co-wrote with Will Burke. He signed on to the directing gigs after directing and co-writing the buzzed-about comedy shorts "I'm F**king Matt Damon" and follow-up "I'm F**king Ben Affleck."
McClammy's "I'm F***ing Matt Damon" short series was pretty funny. The 30-something leads are too young to be cougars so apparently that makes them pumas. The setting for the film is a French skiing vacation.

Mel Gibson to Star in Jodie Foster's Beaver Film

Variety reports that Mel Gibson is going to star in a film called The Beaver. Jodie Foster will co-star and direct the movie that is about a depressed man (Mel Gibson) who cheers himself up by wearing a beaver hand-puppet.
The script, written by Kyle Killen, topped the Blacklist in December.

Gibson will play a depressed man who finds solace in wearing a beaver hand-puppet. On top of helming, Foster will play the role of the man's wife.

Foster boarded the project and brought it to Gibson, with whom she co-starred in 1994's "Maverick."
Some are excited by this film but it may not be the best idea. It would be more exciting to see Jodie Foster and Mel Gibson do another Maverick movie than to watch a depressed Mel Gibson wearing a hand puppet. Maybe it will be more interesting than it sounds.

Portman to Play Warrior Princess in Your Highness

Natalie Portman Boleyn GirlVariety reports that Natalie Portman has signed on to play a warrior princess in a comedy film called Your Highness. Portman's co-stars include Danny McBride and James Franco.
McBride, who wrote the script with Ben Best, plays an arrogant lazy prince who with his brother (Franco) must complete a quest to save the kingdom and his brother's fiance. Portman will play a warrior princess that the lazy prince falls in love with.

McBride and Best set up the project with U and Stuber last year. Jon Mone and Andy Davis are exec producers.

Portman is currently starring with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Rainn Wilson in the Spencer Susser-directed "Hesher," which marks Portman's feature debut as a producer under her banner, Handsomecharlie Films.
We like the idea of Natalie Portman playing a warrior princess. The idea would be even more intriguing if it wasn't a comedy film.

Three Stooges Movie Moving Ahead

The cast for the remake of The Three Stooges has been cast and it's quite bizarre. Are you ready? Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro and Jim Carrey are the stooges.
Studio has set Sean Penn to play Larry, and negotiations are underway with Jim Carrey to play Curly, with the actor already making plans to gain 40 pounds to approximate the physical dimensions of Jerome "Curly" Howard. The studio is zeroing in on Benicio Del Toro to play Moe.

The film is not a biopic, but rather a comedy built around the antics of the three characters that Moe Howard, Larry Fine and Howard played in the Columbia Pictures shorts. The quest by the Peter and Bobby Farrelly to harness the project spans more than a decade and three studios. They first tried at Columbia, again at Warner Bros., and finally at MGM, where Worldwide Motion Picture Group chairman Mary Parent championed the cause and bought the WB-owned scripts and made a deal with Stooges rights holders C3.

Production will begin in early fall for a release sometime in 2010. The Farrellys, who wrote the script, are producing with their Conundrum partner Bradley Thomas, and Charlie Wessler. C3 Entertainment principals Earl and Robert Benjamin will be executive producers.
Jim Carrey needs to have a chat with Russell Crowe about what happens when you refuse the fat suit and actually pack on the pounds for the role. Crowe said he first gained weight for The Insider and it adversely affected his cholesterol and blood pressure. He then lost weight for Gladiator. After gaining weight again for a different role, he said his metabolism is all messed up and he can't seem to lose weight easily anymore. Fat suits are the way to go.

Amanda Bynes is Canned

Amanda Bynes is starring in a new ABC comedy pilot called Canned, in which Amanda plays a naive midwesterner who is taken advantage of by her boss.
"Canned" revolves around a group of friends who are all fired on the same day. Kevin Etten created the show and exec produces, while David Rosenthal and Peter Traugott are also EPs.

*****

She joins a cast that also includes Tim Peper, Stephanie Lemelin and Baron Vaughn.
We like Amanda Bynes: she's very funny. It will be interesting to see how many more workplace comedies network audiences are in the mood for.

Brad Pitt and Natalie Portman to Star in New Romantic Comedy

Brad Pitt and Natalie Portman are set to star in an adaptation of the book Important Artifacts and Personal Property From the Collection of Lenore Doolan and Harold Morris, Including Books, Street Fashion and Jewelry by Leanne Shapton (Farrar, Straus & Giroux).
Paramount won an auction for the book rights Tuesday night. Pitt's Plan B will produce with Portman's Handsomecharlie Films banner. Portman brought the book to Pitt, whose company is Par-based. The book takes the form of a Sotheby's-like estate auction catalog, with 325 entries and photographs depicting items that reveal the private moments and the rise and fall of a four-year relationship between the fictitious couple Hal Morris (a 40ish photographer) and Lenore Doolan (a New York Times food columnist in her late 20s).

The project will be developed as a romantic comedy to star Pitt and Portman. Shapton, an illustrator and art director of the Times' op-ed page, uses items that range from clothes to notes, emails and heirlooms to convey the excitement, hopes, dreams and, ultimately, the heartache of a love affair that runs its course.
That sounds incredibly difficult to film. We do feel fairly certain that they're going to shorten that title.

The Simpsons Passes Gunsmoke in Number of Seasons

The SimpsonsE Online reports that Fox has ordered two more seasons of The Simpsons which will bring them to a total of 22 seasons. That gives them the record as it puts them ahead of Gunsmoke's 20 seasons. They will still end up over 100 episodes shy of Gunsmoke's episode total.
The network has requested 44 more episodes, bringing the four-fingered family's total to a whopping 493.

However, while the renewal means The Simpsons has topped Gunsmoke's 20-year run as the longest-running prime-time entertainment series, Springfield's finest have a way to go before besting the western's episode count. Gunsmoke played for an astonishing 635 episodes.
The Simpsons are currently celebrating 20 years of the show on the official website.

Sex and the City Sequel is a Go

Sex and the City MovieNow that all four stars have signed contracts, the Sex and the City sequel is definitely happening. Kim Cattrall, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon will all be reprising their roles from the hit TV show. Writer/director/producer Michael Patrick King has also signed his contract.
No start date's set for shooting and no script's been written. New Line president Toby Emmerich has been aiming to fast-track the project in hopes of a summer 2010 release. As on the original, John Melfi and Parker will be producers on the sequel with King.

Sex and the City opened in May, four years after the finale of the HBO series, and focused on the nuptials of Carrie Bradshaw to Mr. Big, portrayed by Chris Noth. The film performed impressively with $152 million domestically and $260 million more from international markets, which had been sold off by New Line to finance the project. The slimmed-down New Line no longer uses pre-sales.
If the second film does as well as the first, you know what that means.

Chuck Goes 3-D Tonight

Screen shot from Chuck

Chuck and Heroes return tonight! And Chuck will be in 3-D. If you don't have 3-D glasses, don't worry. TV 3-D isn't quite like the movie version. When we saw Beowulf in the IMAX theater in 3-D, we about jumped out of our seats when the dragon flew right at us. It was totally cool.

Tonight on Chuck, Dominic Monaghan (Lord of the Rings, Lost) plays international rock star Tyler Martin (shades of Charlie on Lost, anyone?) who may be involved in some kind of shady dealings. Or he may need protecting. In any event, Chuck gets to hang out with him and a good time is had by all. We just love Chuck and Heroes, too. Don't be a hater: the next episodes of Heroes will bring you back into the fold.

Chuck airs at 7:00 p.m. Central time/8:00 p.m. Eastern with Heroes following right afterwards on NBC.

Sony Wants More Paul Blart

Paul BlartThe surprising success of Paul Blart: Mall Cop has Sony hoping for a sequel to capture yet more Mall Cop box office magic. An L.A. Times article says Happy Madison Productions - a film company founded by Adam Sandler - rarely does sequels but they might make an exception for Paul Blart.
Belgrad and his Sony production chief partner, Matt Tolmach, have a number of modestly budgeted comedies in the works, including Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler in "The Ugly Truth"; "Bad Teacher"; the demolition derby story "The Precious View"; and "Winter's Discontent."

What's less clear is when Paul Blart might save the day again. James has been developing the comedy "Zookeeper" at MGM and may soon costar in a new Sandler comedy for Sony.

"Happy Madison historically has been very reluctant to do sequels," says a hopeful Belgrad. "But we believe there is an opportunity to make another Paul Blart movie."
Paul Blart won its opening weekand and second weekand at the Box Office. The film has already brought in nearly $70 million according to Box Office Mojo.

Scott Bakula to Play Chuck's Father

Scott BakulaScott Bakula is going to be guest starring on Chuck as Chuck Bartowski's Dad. This news follows reports that Chevy Chase will also have a guest starring role on the hit spy comedy.
Quantum Leap star Scott Bakula is slated to join Chuck as our protagonist's estranged father for a three-episode arc, creator Josh Schwartz tells EW's Ausiello.

"Chuck made a promise to his sister, Ellie [Sarah Lancaster], that he was going to find their dad in time for her wedding," Schwartz says. "And it's something that Chuck becomes consumed with pursuing during the second half of the season."
Scott Bakula sounds like a great addition to the cast.

30 Rock, Office Get Early Pick Up by NBC

NBC just announced that it is renewing 30 Rock, The Office and The Biggest Loser.
Renewals were announced Thursday afternoon during NBC's portion of the TV Critics Assn. press tour by new primetime entertainment prexy Angela Bromstad and incoming alternative topper Paul Telegdy. "These renewals represent our faith in 'The Office' and '30 Rock' as they continue to represent the gold standard in acclaimed and award-winning series," Bromstad said.

Peacock also announced that Conan O'Brien's last night on "Late Night" will take place on Feb. 20, with new host Jimmy Fallon taking over on March 2. As for spring airdates, NBC confirmed that new John Wells police drama "Southland" will fill the "ER" void on Thursdays at 10 p.m. starting April 9; the "ER" finale, meanwhile, has now been pushed to April 2.
Now, if we can just avoid an actors' strike, maybe the television schedule for fall will be halfway decent.

Jackie Chan to Star in Karate Kid Remake

Jackie Chan is in final negotiations to star in the remake of the hit film, The Karate Kid.
Harald Zwart will helm the pic, which has been revamped as a starring vehicle for Jaden Smith. Set in an exotic Asian locale, the new film will borrow elements of the original plot, wherein a bullied youth (Smith) learns to stand up for himself with the help of an eccentric mentor (Chan). Chris Murphy penned the screenplay.

"Karate Kid" will shoot early this summer in Beijing. Jerry Weintraub, who launched the original 1984 pic, is producing alongside Overbrook Entertainment's James Lassiter, Will Smith and Ken Stovitz. China Film Group Corp. will co-produce in China.
Jaden Smith has the hottest career in Hollywood these day. He was kind of sulky in The Day the Earth Stood Still, but perhaps he'll shake of the pout to play the karate kid. But it's going to be hard to best the original kid, Ralph Macchio.

Four Christmases Topping Box Office For Thanksgiving Weekend

The comedy Four Christmases starring Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn is on track to top the Thanksgiving weekend box office.
On Friday--a huge moviegoing day--"Four Christmases" grossed $13.2 million from 3,310 runs for a three-day cume of $28.2 million. Laffer is proving more of a crowd-pleaser than expected.

Perhaps the most watched wide release off the holiday is Baz Luhrmann's sweeping epic "Australia," from 20th Century Fox. The Hugh Jackman-Nicole Kidman starrer was up 96% on Thursday, and 30% on Thursday, indicating that the film is building interest among adult moviegoers, as with Luhrmann's previous films.

On Friday, "Australia" grossed $5.8 million from 2,462 runs for a three day cume of $11 million. Pic's performance is in line with Fox's expectations, even if it is only in fifth place at the holiday box office. Friday's day-over-day gain of 96% was the best among adult-skewing titles.

Adults aslo are turning out for Focus Feature's specialty opener "Milk." Gus Van Sant's Harvey Milk biopic is off to a strong start, grossing $498,086 from 36 runs on Friday for a per locaiton average of $13,836 and coming in No. 10 overall. "Milk," toplining Sean Penn, has earned $982,681 since Wednesday.
Four Christmases is getting better reviews than the other Vince Vaughn Christmas comedy, Fred Claus. That was truly one of the worst Christmas movies, ever.

Kathy Griffin Inks New Deal With Bravo

Bravo is very happy with Kathy Griffin. The comedienne just inked a new deal with the network for a fifth season of her reality show and some hosting duties, as well.
Deal calls for Griffin to return as host of Bravo's "A-List Awards," a kudocast honoring those who've impacted beauty, food, fashion, design and pop culture. Also in 2009, Griffin will shoot two hourlong standup specs for the cabler.

In January, she'll start production on season five of "Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List." Skein has won the reality series Emmy the last two years.
Any deal that leads to situations where Kathy and Tim Gunn share a stage sounds good to us.

Dirty Dancing Heads to Broadway

A stage version of the hit film Dirty Dancing is headed to Broadway, most likely at the Neil Simon theater in the fall of 2009.
No official plans have been confirmed, but legiters are hearing the hit stage version of the 1987 pic has set its sights on the Rialto venue that "Hairspray," set to shutter in January, has occupied since July 2002.

A Gotham run of "Dirty Dancing -- The Classic Story Onstage," which opened earlier this week in Chi, has long been a no-brainer. Show already has proved popular in hit runs in Hamburg, London and Toronto. Chi engagement, which stars Amanda Leigh Cobb and Josef Brown, is billed as pre-Broadway, although no firm timeline was announced.

Production, penned by Eleanor Bergstein based on her screenplay, hews closely to the plot of the movie, centering on a romance in the Catskills in 1963. Songs from the pic are used in the show, although since none of the lead actors sing, the legit version will not necessarily be considered a musical.
This is one film that translates very easily to the stage. Will they recast the Chicago actors? Nothing is settled yet.

Will Ferrell Heads to Broadway

Will Ferrell is heading for Broadway in a one man show called "You're Welcome America. A Final Night With George W Bush."
Production will be helmed by Adam McKay, the writer-director of Ferrell pics "Step Brothers," "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby" and "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy." Plot of the show remains sketchy, but the title and timing suggest a Bush caricature and plenty of topical humor.

Production begins previews Inauguration Day, Jan. 20, ahead of a Feb. 1 opening at the Cort Theater. Limited engagement is skedded to shutter March 15. Writing credits have not yet been confirmed, although it seems likely Ferrell and McKay will collaborate on the script, since the duo co-wrote the screenplays for all three of their prior pic outings.
If the show is anything like Ferrell's on-target impersonations of President Bush, it will be hilarious. It will sell out, no question.

Season Finale of Burn Notice is Tonight

The season finale of Burn Notice airs tonight on USA at 10:00 p.m. Eastern/9:00 p.m. Central time. When a client is forced into a kidnapping scheme, Michael must pose as a security consultant. We just love this show and are quite irritated that it's ending for the season. Here's a sneak peek of the finale:

Ghostbusters 3 in the Works

Ghostbusters LogoIf there's something strange in your neighborhood. Who you gonna call? The hilarious Ghostbusters comedy series from the 1980s is going to be revived with a Ghostbusters 3 sequel. The Chicago Tribune's Pop Machine blog received an email from Harold Ramis saying that the old actors should be back in the movie in some sort of mentor role.
judd apatow is co-producing year one and has made several other films for sony, so of course the studio is hoping to tap into some of the same acting talent. aykroyd, ivan reitman and i are consulting at this point, and according to dan, bill murray is willing to be involved on some level. he did record his dialogue for the new ghostbusters video game, as did danny and i, and ernie hudson. the concept is that the old ghostbusters would appear in the film in some mentor capacity.
New York Magazine's Vulture blog says two writers from The Office, Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, are writing the screenplay. It will be great to see this return especially with the special effects available these days. Casting for the new group of Ghostbusters will be crucial.

Jason Segel to Write Muppets Screenplay

The MuppetsThe Telegraph reports that Jim Henson's Muppets are returning. There will first be a Disney movie and if that is well-received the tv show could return as well. Jason Segel (Forgetting Sarah Marshall) will be writing the screenplay and the pressure is on him to save the Muppets.
Should the film go well, it opens up the possibility of a television programme, also written by 28-year-old Segel.

A source said: "Jason is a massive Muppets fan and is seen as the man to finally bring The Muppet Show back to TV.

"It will obviously have all its old fans but Jason's comedy is hugely popular with youngsters so it will open it up to a whole new audience."

The source added: "If the movie script is popular Jason will write the TV series too. He is already coming up with ideas for it."
It would be good to see The Muppets return. Hopefully, if the tv show does return it will include Beaker and the Swedish Chef.

Stiller Responds to Threatened Boycott of Tropic Thunder

Tropic ThunderA number of disability groups are demanding a boycott of Ben Stiller's new satire, Tropic Thunder, because the word "retard" is used a number of times in the film. Stiller's character is a pompous actor who has played the mentally handicapped in order to win awards. Stiller responded via MTV:
While not denying that ridicule exists in the film, Wheeler, Shriver and the rest of the protesters miss the point of who is being made fun of, Stiller told MTV News. "It's sort of edgy territory, but we felt that as long as the focus was on the actors who were trying to do something to be taken seriously that's going too far or wrong, that was where the humor would come from," Stiller insisted. "[The joke is on] actors reaching for roles in terms of hopefully winning awards."

"Some people have taken this as making fun of handicapped people, but we're really trying to make fun of the actors who use this material as fodder for acclaim," co-writer Etan Cohen echoed to MTV. "The last thing you want is for people to think you're making fun of the victims in this who are having their lives turned into fodder for people to win Oscars."

The joke, then, is really on people like Dustin Hoffman ("Rain Man"), Sean Penn, ("I Am Sam") and Tom Hanks ("Forrest Gump"), actors who do more harm than good by denying the painful realities of the illness and instead paint their characters as too sunny or bright, Cohen said. "Movies about the mentally retarded is something we talked about for a long time. My grandfather was adopted by a mentally retarded man, a man who shouldn't have been allowed to adopt a kid," Cohen revealed. "When he saw 'Forrest Gump,' you never saw a guy angrier than him. It was not such a picnic to be raised by that guy."

"The film is in no way meant to disparage or harm the image of individuals with disabilities. We have had productive discussions with representatives of disability-advocacy organizations and look forward to working with them closely in the future," Sullivan wrote. "However, no changes or cuts to the film will be made."
Tropic Thunder opens in wide release Wednesday.

Adam Sandler Pelted With Gumballs

Adam Sundler GumballsThis scene of Adam Sandler being pelted with gumballs is from an upcoming fill called Bedtime Story. Cinematical reports that Adam Sandler plays a character named Skeeter Bronson in the film about bedtime stories that start coming true.
He's a hotel handyman who discovers that the bedtime stories he's telling his niece and nephew are starting to come true. When Skeeter realizes his talent, he tries to take advantage of the situation by improving his life, "but it's the kids' unexpected contributions that turn Skeeter's life upside down."

In the picture above (which Disney sent around yesterday as a part of their fall/holiday preview), he finds himself in a shower of what looks like a whole slew of gumballs
This sounds like it could be one of Sandler's better films. These family-focused films starring popular comedians sometimes do very well. This one will be released during the holidays on December 25th, 2008. The IMDB listing can be found here. Will Ferrell starred a hilarious movie with a similar theme where a novel comes true called Stranger Than Fiction.

Tropic Thunder Has Great Buzz at Comic-Con

Ben Stiller's sendup of Hollywood filmmaking, Tropic Thunder screened at Comic-Con and the reaction was overwhelmingly positive. The biggest buzz coming out of the film is Tom Cruise's not so secret cameo as a foul-mouthed studio head that would sell his own mother if it meant a profit.
And the July 23 screening of Ben Stiller's "Tropic Thunder" -- a spoof of filmmaking with a delightful parody of actors and myriad references to obscure movies -- was perfect grist for the crowd. Tom Cruise is cast in a supporting role as a Hollywood studio chief, screaming a vocabulary that would embarrass a hardened rapper.

The Cruise-Stiller notion of a contemporary Hollywood boss is intriguing: Cruise's character, a bald, pudgy man named Grossman, is not the slick corporate type who heads studios today but rather a screaming, smarmy Semite more reminiscent of Columbia's fabled Harry Cohn. Cruise's Grossman character is perfectly willing to "sell" the life of his star to terrorists in return for insurance money.

Harvey Weinstein would fire the Cruise character on the grounds of being politically incorrect. But that is part of the subtext of "Tropic Thunder," with Robert Downey Jr., Jack Black and the others in scenes that are even bawdier than a Judd Apatow effusion. And, yes, "Tropic Thunder" elicited thunderous laughs from the crowd.
We can't wait to see it.

Harold and Kumar Ride Again

Harold and KumarHarold and Kumar are set to ride again in a third film adventure.
Stars John Cho and Kal Penn are expected to reprise their roles as the ganja-loving duo because Mandate has options on the actors for the third installment...... Mandate prexy Nathan Kahane said he is eager to revisit the stoner franchise. "Thanks to Jon and Hayden, the Harold and Kumar movies pushed envelopes, broke boundaries and connected with fans," he said. "We are so grateful to be back in business with Jon, Hayden and Greg."

First film garnered a cult following, earning $18 million domestically in 2004 and generating more than $30 million in DVD coin. Sequel, which cost $12 million, earned $14.9 million its opening weekend before topping out at $38 million. "Guantanamo Bay" is set for release on DVD on Tuesday.
They're kind of like the Cheech and Chong for the new millennium. The story line for the new film is being kept "tightly under wraps."

Seven Seasons of Desperate Housewives

Desperate Housewives now has a planned life of seven seasons.
"Desperate Housewives" creator and executive producer Marc Cherry told a meeting of the Television Critics Association on Thursday that he plans to end the ABC series after seven seasons. The domestic comedy-drama starring Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, Marcia Cross and Eva Longoria Parker begins its fifth season this fall.

"I love working with these gals, but the idea of letting anyone else take the show from me kind of makes me sad and sick to my stomach," Cherry said. "We're going to get out while people still like us. "Of course," he added, "this could be some clever ruse on my part to get tremendous amounts of money in Season 8, but who knows."
This is good news for Housewives fans. We just want to see Eva Longoria with her short hair and fatsuit. Well, extra padding. She's supposed to have let herself go, which is kind of hard to picture.

Psych Season Two Off to a Great Start

Screencap from Psych

Psych returns tonight and that is a very good thing. The psychic detective Shawn Spencer (who uses his powers of observation to pretend to be a psychic) is back again with his lifelong friend Gus. Cybill Shepherd guest stars as Shawn's mother. Meanwhile, Gus' boss demands that he quit the Psych Agency and focus on his own job at the drug company. But when Gus' boss' boss has a ghost problem, Gus and Shawn are on the case.

Cybill Shepherd is very funny as Shawn's psychologist mother and the dialog is as snappy and fun as usual. But it is the chemistry between James Roday (Shawn Spencer) and Dule Hill (Burton 'Gus' Guster) that really makes this show work. We've loved this show from the start and it's as entertaining as ever.

Psych airs tonight on USA at 10:00 p.m. Eastern/9:00 p.m. Central. And, just for fun, here are Shawn and Gus singing "Ebony and Ivory." Shawn does a pretty decent Paul McCartney imitation.

Robert Downey, Jr. is Sherlock Holmes

Robert Downey, Jr. is set to play Sherlock Holmes in the upcoming film directed by Madonna's husband, Guy Ritchie. So how did this come about, anyway?
[L]et's connect the dots, shall we? Ritchie has a movie in the can at Warners, Rocknrolla, a gangster thriller due in October that stars 300's Gerard Butler and Jeremy Piven. People I know who've seen it say it's actually pretty good--so perhaps Ritchie has some renewed heat. But one detail seems to have eluded Variety. Guess who produced the new film? Susan Downey, who is Robert Downey Jr.'s wife and--equally important--an exec VP for Joel Silver, Warners' top action producer. And guess who is producing "Sherlock Holmes"? Wow--it's Joel Silver and Susan Downey.

Isn't it amazing how everywhere you turn in Hollywood, there's a funny coincidence staring you right in the face?
This is the action version of Sherlock Holmes. Sacha Baron Cohen and Will Ferrell are making a comic Sherlock Holmes movie, which will come out a bit later. We want to see both films. Robert Downy, Jr. as Sherlock Holmes? We love it.

Courteney Cox to Appear on Scrubs

Courteney Cox is joining the cast of Scrubs this fall. Michael Ausiello has the scoop.
J.D., Elliot and Co. have a new friend! Sources confirm to me exclusively that Courteney Cox is joining the cast of Scrubs for a three-episode arc as Sacred Heart's new Chief of Medicine.

Remember back in May, when exec producer Bill Lawrence revealed to me that he was looking to stunt cast the role of Dr. Kelso's successor? Yeah, I know -- I'd say he kept his word, too. Cox's boss lady character will "ruffle feathers," teases a Scrubs insider.
We love it. But why is she there for only three episodes? Make her a regular!

Premiering this Week: Burn Notice Second Season

Photo of Burn Notice castWe just finished watching the first two episodes of Burn Notice -- and they are smoking hot. This is smart, funny, wildly entertaining tv. The kind that there just isn't enough of. When we left spy Michael Weston at the end of season one, he was driving into the back of a large semi trailer as part of a deal to find out who "burned" him, making him persona non grata in the CIA and leaving him stranded in Miami.

Michael (played with deadly aplomb by Jeffrey Donovan) hates Miami and is determined to find out who burned him. With the help of his old FBI friend (played brilliantly by Bruce Campbell) and his ex-girlfriend, the lethal Fiona (Gabrielle Anwar), Michael investigates what appears to be a conspiracy to oust him. To make ends meet, he does some detective work and helps people in need. Oh, and he gets nagged by his mother (Sharon Gless). She nags a lot, actually.

In season two, Michael is forced to go back to work for the people who burned him, although he still doesn't know who they are. But they have the key to his future, so he plays along. His new handler is the sexy and evil Carla (Battlestar Galactica's Tricia Helfer). Carla wouldn't be so bad, except she keeps threatening his mom's life. The first season was great, but if the first two episodes we saw are any indication, the second season will be even better. Matt Nix, the creator and main writer for the series, keeps the dialogue snappy and smart. And there is no one who does better with snappy and smart dialogue than Bruce Campbell. Jeffrey Donovan plays it just right: he seems smart, lethal and yet he still dutifully shows up when his mother demands that he fix her coffeemaker.

Matt Nix throws in McGyver-like ingenuity, lots of action and great scenery. And Michael's droll voiceovers about everything from his favorite weaponry to how to build a bomb are priceless. Burn Notice premieres this Thursday on USA at 10:00 pm Eastern time.

Reese Witherspoon and Ben Stiller Team Up for Romantic Comedy

Reese Witherspoon and Ben Stiller have signed on to star in Cameron Crowe's next, untitled, romantic comedy.
Crowe will direct from his own screenplay and is producing along with Scott Rudin. The plot is being kept under wraps. Columbia beat out four rival studios in a bidding war over the fully-developed project, which is scheduled to start shooting in January, once Stiller and Witherspoon's schedules open up.

Stiller next will be seen later this summer in Tropic Thunder, which he also co-wrote, produced and directed, and he is shooting Night at the Museum 2: Escape From the Smithsonian. Witherspoon's upcoming projects include Four Christmases, with Vince Vaughn, and she is voicing characters for DreamWorks Animation's Monsters vs. Aliens.
We're looking forward to seeing both Tropic Thunder and Night at the Museum 2: Escape From the Smithsonian.

Keira Knightley is Eliza Doolittle

Keira Knightley is set to star in a remake of My Fair Lady. The film will be just like the classic: set in 1912, it will be a musical.
While it's being called an update, the film will use the tuner's score and retain its 1912 setting. Where possible, Kenworthy and Mackintosh intend to shoot the film on location in the original London settings of Covent Garden, Drury Lane, Tottenham Court Road, Wimpole Street and the Ascot racecourse. (The 1964 Warner Bros. film was lensed entirely on Hollywood soundstages.)

The filmmakers plan to adapt Alan Jay Lerner's book more fully for the screen by drawing additional material from George Bernard Shaw's play "Pygmalion," which served as the source material for the musical. The goal is to dramatize the emotional highs and lows of Doolittle as she undergoes the ultimate metamorphosis under the tutelage of Professor Henry Higgins.

"This update will preserve the magic of the musical while fleshing out the characters and bringing 1912 London to life in an authentic and exciting way," said Col co-president Doug Belgrad.

Kenworthy, who worked with Knightley on "Love Actually," said, "With 40 years of hindsight, we're confident that by setting these wonderful characters and brilliant songs in a more realistic context, and by exploring Eliza's emotional journey more fully, we will honor both Shaw and Lerner at the same time as engaging and entertaining contemporary audiences the world over."
Keira Knightley is no Audrey Hepburn and this is a terrible idea.
