Beyonce Drops New Single and Video Called Formation

Posted on February 6, 2016

Beyonce just dropped a new video and single called "Formation." The single is available to download for free on Tidal. Beyonce is scheduled to perform with Coldplay during the Super Bowl halftime show tomorrow, so absolutely no one was expecting her to drop a new video. The video was filmed in New Orleans and has many images reflecting what happened after Hurricane Katrina as well as the police shootings of young black men.

It's a more political video than we are used to from Beyonce. We see images of her on top of a police car that is slowly sinking, a little black boy in a hoodie dancing in front of a line of armed police officers, a man reading a newspaper on which Martin Luther King, Jr's image appears and a graffiti filled wall that reads "Stop Shooting Us."

But it's not all social statements. There is also glamour as she sings about her Givenchy gown, dancing and some lovely shots of her daughter Blue Ivy dancing with other little girls who are all dressed in white.

She sings about her family roots (as well as her love for Givenchy):

I'm so reckless when I rock my Givenchy dress (stylin')/
I’m so possessive so I rock his Roc necklaces/
My daddy Alabama, my mama Louisiana/
You mix that negro with that Creole make a Texas bamma/

The lyrics get much raunchier as the song goes on. You'll never think about Red Lobster in the same way ever again. Take a look:
