The Blind Side is Weekend's Number One Film

Posted on December 6, 2009

Sandra Bullock's football drama, The Blind Side, won the box office this week in its third week in theatres. This prevented New Moon from a third consecutive box office win. The Blind Side, based on a book by Michael Lewis, tells the story of Michael Oher who grew up in poverty and was adopted by Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy and became a top college football prospect. Sandra Bullock plays Leigh Anne Tuohy. Michael Oher is now an offensive lineman for the Baltimore Ravens in the NFL. The film made another $20 million to take its box office total to $129 million. New Moon was second and added $15 million to its massive $255 million total.

Brothers starring Tobey Maguire, Natalie Portman and Jake Gyllenhaal made over $9 million and opened in third. Jim Carrey's A Christmas Carol continues to linger near the top of the box office charts each week. It finished fourth, made $7.5 million and now has a box office total of $115 million. Disney's Old Dogs starring John Travolta and Robin Williams came in fifth and Screen Gem's thriller Armored opened in sixth.

The Blind Side and New Moon are likely done leading the box office. Some major films coming include The Princess and the Frog, which opens December 11th, and James Cameron's Avatar, which opens December 18th.
