Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Wins Weekend Box

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes won the box office this weekend. The film made $73 million with an $18,402 per theater average. This was considerably larger than Rise of the Planet of the Apes' $54.8 million opening in 2011. It is turning out be very a very successful franchise. The talented Andy Serkis is being given a lot of credit for his role as Ceaser. The movie has very positive reviews from critics.

Transformers: Age of Extinction finished second and added $16.5 million during its third weekend in theaters. This pushed it over the $200 million mark to $209 million. Another $50 million will make it the top grossing film of 2014. Transformers was followed by Tammy which made $12.9 million during its second weekend in theaters.

Tammy was followed by 22 Jump Street, How to Train Your Dragon 2, Earth to Echo, Deliver Us From Evil and Maleficent. There were no other major opening films this weekend aside from Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. You can view the box office chart here.
