Despicable Me 3 Tops Box Office With $75 Million Opening

Minions everywhere are celebrating the continued success of their franchise this weekend. The odd little yellow creatures have helped create another big weekend for Universal Pictures. Despicable Me 3 won the box office with a $75 million opening. The film has an A- CinemaScore. The big opening means there will likely be more Minions movies to come.

The new Minions film was followed by Baby Driver which had a solid opening. It made $21 million in 3,226 theaters for a $6,510 per theater average. The action comedy stars Ansel Elgort as Baby, the getaway driver. Other stars include Jon Bernthal, Jon Hamm, Elza Gonzalez, Lily James, Jamie Foxx and Kevin Spacey. It has an A- CinemaScore.

Baby Driver was followed by Transformers: The Last Knight which fell 62% from its opening weekend. The steep fall had The Last Knight making just $17 million during its second weekend in theaters. Wonder Woman continues to do well with a drop of just 35% from its prior weekend. It has now made $346 million after five weekends in theaters. It could become a $400 million film.

Wonder Woman was followed by Cars 3 which plunged 60% from its opening weekend. The House debuted in sixth place and made $9 million. This was a weak opening from the comedy starring Amy Poehler and Will Ferrell. Theaters may have been overloaded with comedies for the July 4th weekend. The House has a B- CinemaScore. 47 Meters Down has some decent buzz going despite a C CinemaScore. It fell just 33.9% from last week. It has made $32.5 million after three weekends. The big film opening this coming weekend is the Spider-Man reboot, Spider-Man: Homecoming. Other openers include A Ghost Story, City of Ghosts and Patti Cake$. The new Spider-Man film should easily opening the weekend. The size of the box office will be significant for Marvel.
