Gone Girl and Annabelle Top Weekend Box Office

Posted on October 5, 2014

Gone Girl has edged out Annabelle to win the box office this weekend. Gone Girl is based on the novel by Gillian Flynn. Flynn also wrote the screenplay. The film is directed by David Fincher and stars Ben Afleck and Rosamund Pike. The film made $38 million to put it $800,000 ahead of the horror film Annabelle, which made $37.2 million.

Annabelle is a horror movie about a creepy looking vintage doll that terrorizes a family. It stars Ward Horton, Annabelle Wallis and Alfre Woodard. We are surprised it did so well as the trailer for film had some unintentionally hilarious moments.

Annabelle was followed by last weekend's top film, The Equalizer, which made $19 million during its second weekend in theaters. It has now made $64.5 million. The Equalizer was followed by The Boxtrolls and The Mazer Runner.

Left Behind, starring Nicolas Cage, opened with $6.8 million. It had a weak per theater average of $3,753 per theater. Left Behind was followed by This is Where I Leave You and Dolphin Tale 2. Guardians of the Galaxy remained in the top ten during its tenth weekend in theaters. The over performing film added $3 million to bring its total gross to $323 million. The film's success inspired a SNL skit about Marvel called Marvel Can't Fail. You can view the complete box office chart for the weekend here.
