Iron Man 3 Opens With $175 Million Weekend

Posted on May 5, 2013

Iron Man 3 completely dominated the box office this weekend. The film made $175 million, which is the second biggest opening of all time. Only Marvel's The Avengers had a bigger opening. The Avengers opened with a $207 million weekend last year.

You can see the chart of the biggest weekend openings here. Four of the top five are superhero films.

There was not another film anywhere near Iron Man 3. Pain and Gain made $7.6 million, which was about $167 million less than Iron Man 3 made. It was followed by 42, Oblivion, The Croods, THe Big Wedding and Mud. You can see the complete box office report here.

The big question now is whether or not Iron Man 3 will be able to hold the box office next weekend when The Great Gatsby opens. The Avengers managed to dominate for several weekends last year. That will be difficult for Iron Man 3 to do, especially with Star Trek Into Darkness opening on May 17th.
