The Martian and Goosebumps Top Weekend Box Office

Posted on October 25, 2015

The Martian starring Matt Damon topped the box office this weekend. This is the third time it has won the weekend. It was also the number one film in theaters two and three weekends ago. Last weekend Goosebumps was the top film. Goosebumps is number two this weekend.

The Martian has been showing impressive staying power. It has now made $166 million after four weekends in theaters. This weekend's top three films - The Martian, Goosebumps and Bridge of Spies - each fell only about 25% to 30% from the previous weekend. They prevented any of the opening films from breaking into the top three.

The number four film was The Last Witching Hunter starring Vin Diesel. It opened in fourth and made $10.8 million. It has a B- CinemaScore. Another film that underperformed was Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension, which opened in sixth place and made $8.2 million. Steve Jobs went to a wide release this weekend and added $7.2 million to bring its total gross to $10 million.

This weekend's two other opening films had terrible debuts. Rock the Kasbah starring Bill Murray made just $1.5 million in 2,012 theaters for a dismal $750 per theater average. Jem and the Holograms was even worse. The box office for this movie was a total disaster. Jem made just $1.3 million in 2,413 theaters. This is an average of just $547 per theater. Forbes calls Jem an "outrageous tragedy" and notes that it has the fourth ever lowest box office score ever for a film opening in more than 2,000 theaters. The film has been so poorly received by Jem fans that Director Jon M. Chu is getting death threats. Jem has a B+ CinemaScore and Rock the Kasbah has a B-.
