Posted on May 27, 2012

Men in Black III won the weekend box office with a $55 million take. This was lower than expectations, but it is hard to be too disappointed with an opening over $55 million. It is a smaller opening than the $87 million opening for Men in Black 2. The film also made $132 million overseas.

The Avengers fell to #2 after three consecutive weekends at number one. It still made another $37 million over the weekend. The Avengers has now made $513 million in the U.S. The Avengers is very close to passing The Dark Knight to take third place on the all time domestic grosses chart. It has the potential to pass Titanic, which made $658 million. Avatar is farther away at $760 million.

Battleship finished third and made $10 million. The Dictator finished fourth and made $9.6 million. The Chernobyl Diaries came in below expectations. It made $8 million and opened in fifth. Chernobyl Diaries was followed by Dark Shadows, What to Expect When You're Expecting and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. The Hunger Games continues to edge closer to $400 million.
