The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 Wins Weekend Box Office

Posted on November 23, 2014

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 easily dominated the box office this weekend with a monster $123 million opening weekend. This is the biggest opening weekend in theaters this year. Mockingjay Part 1 becomes the third wildly successful film in the popular Hunger Games franchise.

Box Office Mojo notes that the opening for Mockingay - Part 1 was 22% less than Catching Fire. However, it is still a huge opening and it is not going to disappoint anyone at Lionsgate. Catching Fire went on to make over $424 million and was the top grossing film in the U.S. in 2013. Mockingay Part 1 will be able to take the top spot if it goes on to make over $332 million, which would push it past Guardians of the Galaxy. A strong second weekend could easily set the film on a course to do just that. Mockingjay Part 1 has also opened big in international markets.

Mockingjay was following by Big Hero 6, which made another $20 million during its third weekend in theaters. The animated film has now made over $135 million after three weekends. Interstellar finished third and made $15.1 million during its third weekend in theaters. It has now passed the $120 million mark.

Interstellar was followed by Dumb and Dumber To which fell to fourth after winning the box office last weekend. Dumber To was followed by Gone Girl, Beyond the Lights, St. Vincent, Fury, Birdman and The Theory of Everything. You can see the box office chart for the weekend here.
