The Martian Tops Box Office Again as New Arrivals Bomb

Posted on November 1, 2015

The Martian is the top film in theaters again this weekend. This is the fourth time the science fiction film has won the box office. Goosebumps also continues to stay just behind The Martian. The Martian has made $182 million so far and Goosebumps has made $57 million.

Bridge of Spies finished third and made $8 million and Hotel Transylvania 2 finished fourth and made $5.8 million. These top three films were in the exact same positions last weekend. Hotel Transylvania 2 moved up from fifth to fourth position.

The reason the same films are repeating is because they only lost about 28% to 35% of their gross from the previous week. It is also because the new arrivals all bombed. The new arrivals this week include Burnt, Our Brand is Crisis and Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse. All three of them had per theater averages of less than $1,700. Only Burnt managed to make more than $5 million.

Burnt starring Bradley Cooper opened in fifth and made $5 million. The film has a B- CinemaScore. Our Brand is Crisis starring Sandra Bullock and Billy Bob Thornton made just $3.4 million for the weekend with a low $1,558 per theater average. It has a low C+ CinemaScore. Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse - which sounded like it would be a bomb with that name - fared the worst of the three bombs. It made just $1,173 per theater and came in 12th place.
