Posted on June 9, 2013

The Purge was a big surprise as the box office this weekend. This was despite a small budget of $3 millin. The film made over $36 million to easily win the weekend. The clever premise in the horror film involves a dark future America where every year the government allows a 12-hour period where all criminal activity becomes legal.

The Purge was followed by Fast & Furious 6, which added nearly $20 million during its third weekend theaters to bring its domestic gross to over $200 million. New York See Me finished third and made $19.5 million. The Internship, a comedy with Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson seeking Google careers, opened with $18 million.

The Internship was followed by Epic, Star Trek Into Darkness, After Earth, Hangover Part III and Iron Man 3. Iron Man 3 is just a little over $5 million away from hitting the $400 million mark in the U.S.
