Three More Avatar Films in the Works
Posted on August 2, 2013
James Cameron and 20th Century Fox plan to take moviegoers back to Pandora three more times. Deadline reports that the number of planned Avatar sequels has been increased from two to three.
The movies will all be filmed at the same time. The first sequel will arrive in theaters on December 2016. The third film arrives in December 2017 and the fourth in December 2018. Cameron will work with WETA Digital on all three films.
Four screenwriters have been hired to write the scripts: Josh Friedman (first sequel), Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver (second sequel) and Shane Salerno (final sequel).
Cameron said in a statement, "Building upon the world we created with Avatar has been a rare and incredibly rewarding experience. In writing the new films, I've come to realize that Avatar's world, story and characters have become even richer than I anticipated, and it became apparent that two films would not be enough to capture everything I wanted to put on screen. And to help me continue to expand this universe, I'm pleased to bring aboard Amanda, Rick, Shane and Josh - all writers I've long admired - to join me in completing the films screenplays."
Avatar was released in 2009. It made nearly $2.8 billion worldwide.
