X-Men: Apocalypse Tops Memorial Day Weekend Box Office
Posted on May 29, 2016
X-Men: Apocalypse topped the box office this memorial day weekend. It made $65 million through Sunday. By comparison, Apocalypse made less than the $90 million opening X-Men: Days of Future Past had in May 2014. Apocalypse has an A- CinemaScore.
Alice Through The Looking Glass had a weak $28 million opening and came in second. Some media outlets are calling the film a "bomb." We wouldn't call over $7,400 per theater a bomb but the $28 million was definitely less than the studio was hoping for. Johnny Depp - who plays the Mad Hatter in the film - has been in the news lately because his wife Amber Heard filed for divorce. Alice Through The Looking Glass also has an A- CinemaScore.
Alice was followed by The Angry Birds Movie, which made $18.7 million during its second weekend in theaters. Angry Birds was followed by Captain America; Civil War, Neighbors 2, The Jungle Book, The Nice Guys and Money Monster. Captain America now has a total gross of $372 million. It is currently the top film of the year with a $10 million lead over Deadpool.
