Review: The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones

Posted on May 7, 2008

As we wait for the release of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, we took a step back in time to when Indy was a young man having great adventures. You may remember the Emmy award-winning television show that featured a young Indy (played as a young man by Sean Patrick Flanery, who played Greg Stillson on The Dead Zone) fighting in World War II, having adventures in love and life, engaging in espionage in North Africa, hunting weird artifacts and meeting major historical figures such as Edith Wharton, Lowell, Thomas and Ernest Hemingway.

The series had a huge budget and was filmed in fantastic locations all over the world: Turkey, Morocco, Italy, you name it, they filmed there. The The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones, Volume Three -- The Years of Change DVD comes in three parts: this is Part 3, when Indy is a young man. The DVD set contains numerous episodes, some of which have been edited together the help the flow of the story.

The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones, Volume One - The Early Years

There are fabulous extra features which explain about the historical figures that Indy meets, with a total running time of 660 minutes. That's a lot of adventure. Sean Patrick Flanery really has Harrison Ford's portrayal down pat: he is very believable as the young Indy. He has a great sense of comic timing.

There is enough action, adventure, humor and G-rated romance here to keep the entire family entertained for a very long time. There are ten discs in this volume. We say: buy all three volumes and pull them out when you have a mixed group of kids, in-laws and teens -- everyone will like it, and there won't be any inappropriate scenes for the young ones. Or watch it with the kids: it's a great way to have some fun and sneak in a history lesson at the same time.
